We got a week off for spring break, and Amber, Stacy, Kate, and I bused up to Christchurch that Monday. Christchurch is a larger city, about five hours north of Dunedin. We met up with some kiwi friends, and they were awesome enough to show us around Christchurch even though the weather was absolutely horrid. We saw the Cathedral, a mini bush in the middle of the city, the Avon River, and some of the original town settlements and beach areas. After two days in Chch we were supposed to take the train up to Nelson, where my Kiwi flatmate Gretchen lives, and stay with her family, while seeing the Northern part of the south Island. Some of us were also hoping to do the Abel Tasman coastal track, which would take us about four days. ... read more

... read more

Gelukkig hadden we nergens last van. Op 1 man ... read more

NZ Day 7 Milford Sound and the Surrounding Fjordland We started out the day at a reasonable time of 8’clock and left the hostel by 9:15am. We fueled up and then headed for the road to Milford Sound. We didn’t know exactly what we were going to see but we were prepared to stop wherever it looked inviting or nice. And stop we did. But there were too many places to stop every time it was nice because that would have been every 5 metres. First we stopped at Mistletoe lake and walked on a little loop through the forest looking at the lake and the beautiful snowcapped mountains reflected in the lake. Then we headed deeper into the Fjordland National Park, which is a World Heritage Area. Our next stop was Mirror Lakes. They ... read more

I feel i should explain more about the canyon swing, so this blog starts from yesterday morning. I woke up, after a very late night, to be met by perfect clear skies, in the most beautiful setting of the trip i think. Queenstown is set by a lake, with a lot of it built on the base slopes of the surrounding mountains, and its just gorgeous. I finally got out of bed around ten, and once the usual rituals had been done, i set out for an explore of the town. I headed straight to the harbour, and walked around that, whilst gazing out across the giant lake. From the end of the harbour you connect immediately to the gardens, more like a big park set on a bit of land that sticks out, so you ... read more

We arrive in Te-Anu as it’s close to Doubtful sounds where we have a one night boat trip booked which brings us through the fjord. Doubtful sounds is the highlight of the trip of New Zealand so far, the boat was brilliant the scenery was just unbelievable, the cliff edges as the boat sailed by especially at sunset and before sunrise. We seen fur seals as the boat headed out by the Tasman sea to get a closer look at them, but what was amazing was the dolphins we seen swimming in the distance jumping out of the water every couple of seconds and then to seen them swim either side the bow of the boat at the front was just class it made the trip. Sunset was cool but in the morning time while still ... read more

Witam wszystkich! No to jestesmy na poludniu, przez ostatnich pare dni pogoda byla przyjemnie sloneczna. Dzisiaj opuszczamy kraine fiordow i podazamy dalej w kierunku Dunedin.

After Dunedin, we headed south to the Catlin coast. There we saw yet more beautiful scenery and more seals. Not much other than that to report! We then drove across to the South West corner of the South Island, that is the Fiordland National Park (essentially a lot of mountains that over the years had been gouged out by glaciers that have since melted and left behind the fiords). We spent a couple of nights in Te Anau. The main highlights being a boat trip across the windy Lake Te Anau to a glow worm grotto. We were guided into a cave beside the lake which had been carved out by an underground stream. Walking past the stream, waterfalls and stalagmites and stalagtites, we reached a little boat that took us in complete darkness deeper into ... read more

We headed north along the shores of Lake Te Anau (not that you can see it, theres always trees in the way!) and over the pass to the Sound. On the way we stopped for walks at various lakes, waterfalls and view points. We took lots of photos because it was a sunny day and the mountains are huge and spectacular, but I'll include ones of us. The road goes through a long tunnel under the biggest hills, and there are traffic lights, so you can have quite a wait there. And when you get to the end, its an absolute dead end, except for the aSound, and you have to come back 120k to Te anau - and thats not the hub of the universe!!... read more

We headed south from Dunedin, stopping at the lovely (unexpectedly) little town of Gore. The hostel was in the old Firestation, which was pretty novel, and though we'd booked a dorm bed, each couple got a separate dorm, so we just got cheap twins really. Had a good look round town in the afternoon sunshine, then this morning checked out the museum (moonshine!) and did a bit of banking, where we got free coffee and hot choc, as well as a voucher for a free cake at the bakers next door! Is welshpool ready for this, I wonder. Then on to Te Anau on the edge of the Fiords. It was a lovely drive, and the town is not so twee as i'd imagined. ... read more
