Last weekend, I got back from the South Island trip with my mother and my brother Michiel. It was very nice, we had such beautiful weather (so lucky, cause now it’s raining all the time) and we saw some amazing things. I will need a couple of blogs to tell you about it, mainly because I have too many pictures for one blog! So, my mum and Michiel arrived two weeks ago in Dunedin, it was really nice to see them again! We did not do much that day due to jetlag, but the next day we did some sightseeing in Dunedin. I showed them the university buildings, introduced them to my supervisor, and we went to the Otago museum (including butterfly garden, see pictures). In the afternoon, we went on the Otago Peninsula tour. We ... read more

3rd February 2008 Today we were booked on the Real Journeys boat Friendship to sail up Milton Sound at 10.00 am. Unfortunately the weather was a bit overcast as we set out from Te Anau at 8.30. The journey only took 1 and half hours as there were not many coaches about that early. We got to Milton in time for coffee and some pictures before we boarded the boat. The Sound looked brooding and impressive in the flat light. The trip took about 2 hours and took us right out to the Tasman Sea. It was a bit chilly on the way out with the wind against us. The mountains come right down to the sea and there is snow on the top of some. A truly magnificent sight. After we got back, we went ... read more

2nd February 2008 Today we drove from Queenstown to Te Anua. When we started out at 8am this morning it was very misty in places and the temperature had dropped to 6 degrees. We made good progress and arrived at Te Anua in glorious sunshine at 10am. Te Anau is the gateway to Fiordland, as there is only one road in and out of Milford. Annette and Vern were pleased to see that the road is now sealed as they remember a slow drive on dirt tracks from here on and as we have a brand new windscreen we are nervous of stones. We had a quick breakfast in Te Anua and decided to press on to Milford Sound. This part of the world is absolutely spectacular but it has very high rainfall levels and as ... read more

Well hello there happy campers.... i know i know it has been far too long since i have updated this blog, and all i can do is beg for your forgiveness and promises you send you gifts of kiwis, green stone and sheep. All of which are found in a plenty here in Nz. I guess that you guys must know that i have made it here to New Zealand, it has only taken 8 and a half months and 10 countries to get here, but i have made it and i am loving it. It really is like being in the set for the Lord of the Rings, though without the hobbits and Orks trying to kill you for your jewelery. I left Sydney on the 9th of Jan, moved my ticket forward as it ... read more

Again I am desperately trying to catch up with events and will take you back four days to our morning with my cousin Murdo in Dunedin...... Murdo has emigrated here and what a great place he has chosen, the city itself is twinned with Edinburgh, and its bizarre walking around streets named Hanover Street, George street and Castle terrace to name a few. Its really pretty and the beaches are great! We spent the morning exploring the city, the beaches and walking up the worlds steepest street - no mean feet in 27 degrees. It was great to meet up with family on the other side of the world in a place very similar to Scotland - give or take cracking weather and penguins on the beach! We left Murdo's company about 3pm and drove the ... read more

Still not got round to loading photos but have done the Keplar Track - 4 days and 67 kms and no washing facilities! The bath on our return was the best thing ever. The actual walk was stunning with lots of different things to look at and listen to. We went up through Jurassic looking forests and then emerged at the top of the snow covered mountains. The views were stunning. We walked ridges, met alpine parrots (kea) heard bell birds, named because they sound just like a bell - very strange. Last night we met up with some of those on the trek (sorry it's called tramping over here) and celebrated Orna's birthday. (How strange, Orna and Amy are from York!!) Going for an overnight cruise on the Doubtful sound now. Hopefully pictures soon!... read more

Will get around to downloading some photos in a few days, I hope. We landed in New Zealand a few days ago - can't quite remember when and are now in Te Anau after spending yesterday in Queenstown, adventure capital of the world. Queenstown is a pretty little town - much smaller than we'd imagined it would be. The mountain are quite stunning - Andy says it's very like Scotland but on a bigger scale. We went on a jet boat ride this morning which did 360 degree turns in the gorge, spraying us all with water and soaking us in the process. It was great fun. We start on the Kepler Track tomorrow - but it's cold and damp at the moment. We don't quite know how we're going to carry all our food but ... read more

Howdy Guys, typical NZ greeting. Sorry no pictures this time but PC not up to it. Anyway, to continue where we left off. We went Whale watching in Kaikoura and saw two Sperm whales. Both about 50ft long, incredible sight seeing them flukeing their tail to dive. They dive for approx 50 min and to a depth of over 1,000 ft down .Also saw a pod of about 200 dolphins. We then drove down to lake Tekapo where we stayed in a palacial cabin that was nothing short of 5star for three days. During that time, we took a plane flight over Mount Cook, mount Tasman, Fox Gacier and Franz Josef glaciers, absolutely awesome, we also took part in a promotianal film for Lake Tekapo video. Next day we walked up hooker valley trail at Mount ... read more

Ok so here is the rest of what we have done in the past few days. I don't have as many pictures though so hopefully my words can make up for that. And yea it was very windy and cold when we were out at Milford Sound, Kamberly. The day after our minds were blown by Milford Sound we got a completely different mind blowing experience. We took a tour of the local caves in Te Anau. We had to take a cruise boat out to the caves first of all, which took roughly 20 min and allowed us to take in some more great views of the mountain ranges. The first thing that I noticed about this cave, unlike any other ones I had been in was that there was a good sized stream ... read more

Hello hello. We have done a lot in the past couple days. Where to begin. Well we left Dunedin on the 15th and drove about 4 hours west to Te Anau. It is beautifully situated by Lake Te Anau, clever name, and the main departure point for Milford Sound. We stayed in a hostel that had incredible views of the valley and the mountains and if that wasn't enough there was also a deer farm right outside our room. It was ridiculously beautiful. After settling in and playing some free billiards, we took a nice stroll along the lake and learned that some of the water was released into an adjacent lake by use of gravity, which generated power. Ecologically it is a perfect system because the water from the second lake travels back to the ... read more
