Det kloer over det hele. Hele tiden. Bastarderne her hedder sandflyes.

We were up and out of the camp site quite early, before 9am, and, after a stop at the local supermarket for breakfast stuff, we hit the road and stopped for a picnic just south of Queenstown by the lake, and had a lovely breakfast taking in the sights. We got to Te Anau early afternoon and checked into our camp site. We finally got a top10 card which gets us 10% off each stay, as well as money off other things (including the ferry back!) It also got us $10 off one of the trips to Milford Sound, leaving 8:20 back around 16:30 so we are on that for tomorrow and very excited!! Helen had a bit of a snooze after we arrived, and then, when she woke up, I ended up having a snooze ... read more

A scaled-down version of the Kepler Track. The Kepler is a loop hike, but because of my knee, I'll only be doing the last part of the loop. There's a forty-five minute walk from town to the start of the trail, then I'll be hiking through the bush along the course of the Waiau River for about three hours before finally cutting across to Motorau Hut (another two hours). It was a rainy day. Yes, it rained for pretty much the entire walk in, but as I was mostly in the bush, the trees kept the worst of the rain off and it was really quite pleasant. For the most part the trail was well groomed and not terribly rocky (almost what you might find in a city park). Oh, and the Waiau River is big ... read more

Well, here I am in Te Anau. The town is stretches along the shores of a lake of the same name. I'm spending the next three days here, resting my knee and enjoying some relaxing activities. My first full day included a stop at the wild bird santcuary. The birds in these enclosures are typically rescues that will hopefully be returned to the wild or can never be returned because they wouldn't survive. The most entertaining inhabitants were the kaka. They were having a fine time climbing around their enclosure and making short flights. It was almost like they were performing for us. A stroll along the main street brought me to a small Italian restaurant. A fantastic place, I had a seafood pizza (which included squid). The rest of the day was pretty sedate. The ... read more

Saturday 12-18 We went to the local Christmas market today – very quaint with crafts and baked goods, fresh meats and x-mas toys. I found my favorite souvenir in NZ there: possum fur nipple warmers. If I could buy one for all you girls I would! They don’t leave the boys out either; they have possum fur willy warmers of you need those too. :o) We walked around Te Anau; it’s a small town mostly set up as a stop over for backpackers going to and from the treks and the fiord lands. We got to our motel (a holiday park) and, once again, my cheap ass was amazed at how much this country costs! Maybe I just don’t understand what “holiday park” means in NZ but they charge you a base price for a room; ... read more

Hi all, another great day, started off a bit damp and cloudy but turned to beautiful sun and temp of 27c, we heard you all had some more snow! Anyway our day started with a visit to Larnoch castle, way up high on a mountain, the views were wonderful once the low cloud had gone, if we can download pics you will see( yes we going to attempt again!).We arrived in a lovely place called Te Anau which is by another lake, they certainly seem to have plenty of water!. We have had more time to get to know our travel companions, there is only 14 of us on a 47 seater coach so we have plenty of room to spread out, we have 1 girl on her own from Wales, 2 seperate parties from Finland, ... read more

Sorry, I've not been around for a few days. Have been to Melbourne with Michelle, my sister to stay with her friend Margot for two nights. Had a great time! But as it's the New Zealand trip I'm blogging I'd better get back over there! I'll try and get back to where I left off. Sunday 21st November we left the scenic Milflord Sound and headed back to Te Anau to stay the night as it was getting late to travel too far. We met a young couple from Bakewell in Derbyshire who were living and working in Te Anau for a couple of years. They told us about the 'Pie Man', who as you might guess made pies, special delicious pies we were told. So we thought we'd give him a try. We stopped the ... read more

Diana ‘struck gold’ with her on the spot decision to turn right rather than left out of the campsite and to head further into the Otago goldfields before heading south into Southland (!) … if only navigating in Auckland was as easy. The journey to Arrowtown was short but very beautiful, through a valley reminiscent of Glencoe in the sunshine! We were immediately taken with this quiet, little community which obviously serves as a refuge from the frantic activity of Wanaka and Queenstown. The clapboard buildings of this goldrush town were well-maintained, and although gentrified by beautiful gardens and attractive street furniture, you could still imagine what this place would have been like as a frontier town. The assay scales in the NZ Bank window, the town gaol, the shanty cottages of the miners and the ... read more

Hi patient reader, I'm now typing from the lakefront in Te Anau. Apologies for what comes across as a rather cryptic entry last night. I've been scribbling my thoughts on the whole Greenstone experience and here they come: Day 1: Early transport from Queenstown to Te Anau and then on to The Divide. Shared transport from Te Anau with a Kiwi girl and her French boyfriend who were on the way to camp all the way over the alpine passes of the Routeburn. He was already describing his steak at the end of the walk. Was great to be back in he familiar environs of the Milford Road and arriving at the Divide shelter did make me feel like I was at he beginning of something. Have been worrying about how my shoulder (post clavical break ... read more
