Where were we? On Wednesday morning we packed our bags and then went for a walk around parts of Christchurch we had not seen, ending up in the Botanical Gardens for lunch. Back to the hotel to collect our bags and on to the airport by taxi. The flight to Wellington only took 40 minutes and gave us a great view of the harbour as we came into land. We collected our hire car but they were unable to hire us a satnav. Yes I went the wrong way trying to reach the hotel and got really mixed up with city rush hour traffic. The hotel, once we found it was a disappointment after the previous ones. It was claimed to be 4 star, but I doubt that it would warrant two if judged on our ... read more

Just arrived in Wellington. Not quite sure yet why everyone raves about it. Seems like there are zillions of young people and tourists. But I ll reserve judgement till I've been on cable car tomorrow. Well Rotorua really got to me. Very soulless and a general air of despondency. Also it was raining. Spent few hours being smothered in mud and then soaked in suphur pool. Lovely for skin but not so great for silver jewellery!!! So we decided to move on to Napier. Thank goodness!!! On the way went to see geothermal area. Quite amazing! Napier Art Deco City. Buildings rebuilt after the earthquake in 1931 in art deco style. Some great shops with vintage clothes and jewellery. Gorgeous little place, sun shining, lovely motel. Found yoga studio... another plus. Went to 2 fab beaches and wandered ... read more

Tuesday 27/1/15 Napier to Wellington. Quite a long drive to Wellington from Napier but very scenic and very quiet until close to the city. Stopped in a couple of almost deserted towns for coffee and lunch and made it to the apartment in Wellington just after 4pm. Nice apartment, plenty of space to spread out after the small room in Napier and a parking space right at the door. We were close to the city just a street back really but down 177 steps and then a bit of hill! The way back up was ok because we could go up a lift in the James Cook hotel and through their lobby onto our road. Took a walk round the city and along the waterside, busy place with lots of water activity, boats and jumping. Had ... read more

Wednesday 28/1/15 WellingtonTook a ride in the Wellington cable car (funicular really) it goes up the hill with a couple of stops and ends in a large botanical garden. We followed the downhill route back to the city through the gardens, had a coffee stop in the rose garden and emerged into the city through an old cemetery. Arranged to meet Jamie on Cuba St for tea, still quite strange to meet people out of context but not quite so bizarre when it's planned. Nice Italian (gluten free pizza base - no cheese!) A few drinks in another bar and another quite late night.... read more

Considering that my last blog was done in early October I am a little embarrassed to now log one, but as I have been getting a little bit of stick from some of my friends, here goes. So, in my last blog I indicated that I was having a little bit of an argument with my PC which wouldn't down load photo's, so I spat the dummy and sulked for a few weeks. Then when I decided to discuss the matter with said PC, I gave it a whole mug of tea, unintentionally I assure you, and so said PC spat the dummy{and tea} and quit. I now have a brand new replacement PC which I know will be very user friendly to a mug like me and I will be able to put out a ... read more

You may be surprised to know that there is a Stonehenge Aotearoa constructed to mirror the celestial sphere of the southern hemisphere. I was, and I had to go see it for myself. On our final weekend of vineyard sitting in Martinborough, my two friends James and Katharina came to visit. The four of us set out on an adventure: we went wine tasting, exploring the Stonehenge, and to a pick your own (PYO) lavender farm. We started our adventure on a drive in the wrong direction. The small bumble bee of a car took us over steep hills that looked over valleys for kilometers. We dipped into trenches of heavy growth and rock faces, only to come out and see fields with white cotton balls littering the surface. Then we turned around and did the ... read more

A nejen ty kopce a zeleň... Každý průvodce doporučuje ... read more

Driving onto the vineyard at Big Sky Wines, the trees in the rearview mirror engulf the airborne dust of the gravel road. Hills surrounding the Te Muna Valley sit in the distance like curious observers, as the clouds unfold opening into a faded, blue jean sky above. Stepping out of the car, the gentle heat of the sun floods over the vibrant green of the Pinot Noir vines. On my way to the house, their bushy arms wave joyfully in the wind as if to say, “Hey there! We are awaiting our summer leaf plucking.” In the month of January, Jhene and I got to spend almost three weeks vineyard sitting in Martinborough, home of New Zealand's finest Pinot Noir crop. We met Katherine Jacobs and Jeremy Corban, the owners, winemakers and viticulturists for Big Sky, ... read more

Exploring the North Island was addictive. Tramping through the bush in Karekare, my soul craved the opportunity to explore open spaces, to climb over other unknown cliffsides, and sleep again under the unfamiliar celestial sphere. Pitching my tent in Coromandel, a desire to be a nomad connected eternally to the road swelled in my gut. Hearing the stories of full-time travelers living in a hostel in Rotorua, I thought that I too could just skip town to town, get work, explore, and then move along and repeat. Each new place I visited, the inevitability of settling down constantly lingered in the back of my mind. Not far behind that was a counter thought repeatedly whispering: Do you? ...really? Despite my craving to endlessly wander, I had a new home waiting for me in Wellington. I had ... read more
