Flying into Auckland I was full of excitement and also a little anxiety. The New Zealand outdoors are legendary and I could not wait to travel them to see it for myself. Problem was I didn't really have a plan on how to get around. I quickly ruled out taking a "backpacker" hop on hop off bus tour as I wanted to travel at my own pace and see some of the lesser known places and less traveled roads on the North and South Islands of New Zealand. My other two options were buy or rent a car. I found a few good deals for purchasing a car for around $NZ1,100 which upon departure I could resell to get some of my money back, but I worried about a possible lemon and the problems that could ... read more

The last week in New-Zealand I decided to go back to Auckland and use that as a waypoint to go to other places. I did everything in Auckland I wanted to do before which were: The Auckland Museum, the Mt Eden and One Tree Hill walking tour and meet up with friends I made. The Auckland Museum was one of the biggest and comprehensive museum I have ever been to. It contained a huge collection of Maori artifacts from weaponry to the traditional houses. Here I learned about the bloody history the Maori have gone through. Until the Europeans and British started to arrive the Maori consisted of tribes which fought each other in bloody wars. The winning party had the decision to either enslave or incorporate the overwon tribe. Most of the time the losing ... read more

We’d been told of some fantastic glow worm caves at Waitomo, so we headed off debating how best to see them. Sounds strange but there are several ways to view the caves, boat abseiling and ‘black water rafting’. We both fancied the latter, but as we approached we changed our minds as we didn’t want an injury to spoil the rest of our trip- so the boat it was. A young lad led us (along with a few others) into a cave, quite interesting but then we got into a boat in silence, in the dark and drifted into the underwater caverns, then wow! a spectacular display of glow worms all over the roof of the cave….quite magical. We didn’t get a picture, no photography allowed, so Kim photographed the brochure, and just has to photo-shop ... read more

Day 3 of my trip to New Zealand consisted of a walk(not hike) up Mt Eden, the cities highest volcano at a mere 196 meters. Tired from my trek to Rongitoto Island the day before, I took a bus to Mt Eden from downtown Auckland and saved about 90 minutes of walking. I purchased 1.5 litres of water in the town of Mt Eden as it was quite warm (23 C) and humid. Being in the middle of Auckland, the trail was either the roadway or paved walkway up. It took only about 15 minutes to reach the "tihi" (summit), although the going can be, and for me was, slow given the steepness of the hill. From the top you could see wonderful, 360 degree views of Auckland. From the summit, there is a short crater ... read more

General info: Currency: New Zealand dollar Cost of living: 1500ml bottle of water 2,5$, bottle of wine 15$, meal in regular restaurant 15-20$ Another flight to beautiful New Zealand, this time without stops, was not only the longest flight in my life, but so far the longest existing direct filght in the world. This visit was dedicated to explore the city and do some local shopping. By local shopping i mean products made of honey produced only by local bees from manuka bush flowers or cosmetics made of local thermal mud with skin detoxicating properties. Also very popular are rejuvenating creams and masks made of sheep placentas, but let's say I wasn't tempted. Main point of my sightseeing was Mount Eden. The view of the city from the top was amazing, as well i was impressed ... read more

Finally arrived in Auckland, New Zealand after traveling from Fredericton, New Brunswick Canada. Needless to say, with a total trip time of 33 hours, including a 13 hour flight from San Francisco, I was quite travel-worn. Day 1 was slow, just walking around Auckland enjoying not having to wear a jacket. It was 20 C. The day before in Canada around 0 C. On day two the pace quickened a bit with a trip to Rangitoto Island. This is the largest volcano in the Auckland area and only a brief 25 minute ferry ride from Auckland. Numerous trails are available to hike; the most popular being the Summit Trail to the top. The hike takes about 60 to 90 minutes to the top. The trail is actually a road and you pass the unique lava fields ... read more
