Sanasona  village (a 20 minute walk from Yatule resort, at Natadola beach) was such a humbling and interesting visit.... after crossing a rickety old railway bridge, our small tour group was shown the laws of entry into the village, immediately removing our hats and sunglasses. ..the first stop was a meeting hut structure for 65 year old, chief, who sits under the bon wood central post and his 7 tribal leaders who drink cava and direct and disapline the 500 village population. Whipping with large sticks and banning the perpetrator out of the village, for any one who breaks tribe rule. Every member of the village thus stands for the entire community, in tact with land rights, laws and ancient and current rules. This meeting hut's name is Korowaiwai. It is warm in winter and hot ... read more

Hello Fiji!

So we are off to FIJI to enjoy some "Fiji Time" We have booked at Double Tree Resort by Hilton Fiji on Sonaisali Island on the west coast of VITI LEVU one of the islands of Fiji. Two days before leaving Celina decided to confirm our accomodation and in the process upgraded our accommodation to an Ocean Front Bure. Only another FJD800. Woche 4 (7.-13.08.2017): Eine Woche „Fijitime“!

Danach flogen wir ohne ... read more

Bula bula from Fiji- from start to finish this place has been amazing. We arrived in the early hours of the morning to be welcomed not only by the heat but also by a band playing traditional Fijian music. So to say it made us smile is an understatement! A few hours later we were lying on the beach, cocktail in hand, having had a pedicure and massage. The grand total for the above- less than £25!!! We could tell the Fijian lifestyle was going to suit us. In the evening we experienced Fijian Kava (no not cava- definitely NOT cava) which is widely drank out here like alcohol. After observing the local customs we tried it and both came to the unfortunate conclusion it tasted like muddy water!! I think we will stick to beers. ... read more

Today was our final day of the trip. Leaving on this adventure both seemed like so long ago and just yesterday. I was glad to be headed home at least. I got really good sleep, and the sickness had slowed down quite a bit. I had put on a scopalamine patch the night before to help with the seasickness later. It made my mouth dry. I also just felt really stoned in general. I wasn't sure if that was the patch or dehydration, or both. Then we heard the drums for the mantarays. Chris didn't feel like going again today but he saw I was better and badgered me into going. As a nurse, I'd never tell my patients to do something stupid like that. But that's the same with backpacking only three weeks after surgery, ... read more

I Look Like Death
Beautiful Day

Oceania » Fiji » Yasawa Islands February 27th 2017

I maybe died a lot today. Unfortunately there are pretty much zero pictures because starting at 4am I was exploding out my ass. I woke up with my stomach raging, I ran for the bathroom and pretty much repeated that every 30min or so. I didn't sleep much. I lied there thinking, goddamned effing kokonda. This couldn't be what Chris had. This made Chris' little bug look like child's play. Around 8am, Chris headed up to the dining hall for breakfast. While up there, I could hear the pounding of the drums, signalling the return of the mantarays. Chris came back with a plate full of food in case I was hungry, and dressed up for mantaray swimming. I was too sick to be jealous. Forget eating. He looked a little guilty as he snuck out ... read more
Where I Spent Most of My Day

I woke up for our last day on Coralview. We'd be here for the morning but after lunch our boat would be shuttling us to the next resort. I only had a 2.5hr ride this time so I was hopeful the seasickness wouldn't destroy me again. Breakfast was the usual fare of coffee, fruit, an "onion" pancake thing, and bread that was similar, but not, cornbread. Sometimes a crepe instead. We had wanted to do one last snorkeling trip but it turned out the water was choppier today. Not good for snorkeling we were told. We had another surprise awaiting us, though. Last night, the resort employees had come across a sea turtle. So they saved him for us to examine (gently) and then release back into the water. It turns out Coralview participates in turtle ... read more

Most days I've been so tired that I'm not awake any earlier than I have to be. Today, I happened to wake up as the sun was rising, though. Figuring no one else was awake and outdoors, I pulled on a pair of shorts and ran outside in my underwear to see the pink yellow sunrise. It wasn't cold but the mosquitoes were already awake so I snapped a quick picture. It wasn't until then, as I was about to head back inside, that I realized I wasn't the only one outside in my underwear. A few other people had the same idea! So, I ran back in and hopped back into bed for a little bit. That day Billy and I wanted to do the snorkeling safari. At that point, Chris had come down with ... read more
