Oceania » Fiji June 1st 2002

During the time i lived in New Zealand, some friends and I decided to go to Fiji for a week. We've book a pretty fair proposal in a local travel agencie somewhere in Queen's Street. The flight with Air Newzealand took almost 5 hours and we arrived in Nadi, which of course is the capital of Fuji. To be continued...... read more

I was walking, in Fiji, in the South Pacific, on a sprawling beach, in slight half-circle. All around me, nature was slowly disappearing in the dusk. I was alone. For a moment, I felt as if I had been living here for ages, just like that its first inhabitants. I saw the place like an inseparable whole, as if it was the only one I would ever know, the beach, white line of the sand running along the shadowy vegetation, the outlines of the coconut trees, and the black sea, under the darkening blue sky. I would just be like a Polynesian, faced with the infinity of the world, several hundred years ago. Nothing had changed. He would, like I did, have listened to the wind, as if it was the breath of the world, the ... read more

Oceania » Fiji » Yasawa Islands June 30th 1996

...Or at least the part I saw was. So many people who have been to Fiji say they dislike it for the dirtyness or the overcrowding. Keeping in mind that those people also only see places like Nadi and Beachcomber Island. We took a trip through the gorgeous Yasawa Islands on Blue Lagoon Cruises. Tourism is a major part of the local economy, but where we were, there was very little evidence of tourism (apart from us of course) The Islands were clean and lush. Everything was relaxed and we had a lot of time to our selves. The best part about the cruise was we only delt with the Fijian people, not the Indians who control most of the financial side of things, ruthlessly. This trip was my first International travelling experience. I went with ... read more

Oceania » Fiji » Suva May 4th 1990

This entry was prompted by the forum on health by "Talesofawoolleymammoth" as well as by pictures of Fiji recently posted on Facebook by our friend Tom; plus I currently have time on my hands (Ali being back in Britain, looking after her convalescing mum, and it being a holiday weekend here in the States). And so, I've succumb to another self-indulgent retro-blog. Many apologies for using photos pinched from a previous blog ("Twenty two years ago today"), both for the repetition and lousy quality (even worse evidently for having been copied from one blog to another ; the relevant photos are currently inaccessible, but will be substituted as soon as possible). Friday 4th May 1990, Suva, Viti Levu. We arrived from Savusavu on Venua Levu back to the capital, Suva, at the ungodly hour of 6 ... read more

With indulgent time on our hands here in KL it occurred to me: where were we on this day during previous trips? Then checking some old diary folders I came across this… The photos are dismal (images scanned from photos taken on a 1970s child's Kodak). Wednesday 25th April 1990; Taveuni, Fiji. An early rise and caught the 9 a.m. bus to Prince Charles beach with David and Oscar. The small white-sand beach slopes down to a chunk of reef that is exposed at low-tide. Fabulous coral and a myriad of different fish made for great snorkelling interrupted only by sunbathing breaks when we tucked into David’s rum. Again there are no buses back and, with no taxis in evidence either, we decided to try hitching rather than face a nine mile walk. Luckily a truck ... read more

I was fortunate enough to be sponsored through my undergraduate Chemical Engineering degree at the University of NSW via a CSR cadetship. For those old enough to remember, CSR was originally the ultra-conservative Colonial Sugar Refining Company. Amongst the benefits of this cadetship were that they paid you some pocket money along the way so you didn’t have to spend nights or weekends working in bars, and also you knew you had firm employment on graduation, although you didn’t know where. So just after graduation at the end of 1971, I was waiting to hear from my employer whether I was to be assigned to one of the North Queensland sugar mills, one of the capital city refineries, or one of the many divisions that CSR had purchased in the building materials sector. But by some ... read more
