There were two reasons I wanted to go all the way out to Coralview for our beautiful island adventures. One, was the snorkeling with sharks (which we did the day before). The second, more important reason, were the Sawa-I-Lau Caves. Only the resorts (three or so) this far out did tours of the caves. Mostly because of proximity. They're these gorgeous limestone sea caves owned by the locals. That morning after breakfast we headed out to the caves in a motor boat. I really enjoyed the small boat travels- they didn't make me sick at all. We loved flying over the water, our whole group would laugh and yell when we'd hit a rough spot and bounce in our seats. Toki, our main guide, and his helper thought this was odd but funny. I think it's ... read more

Our boat leaves the harbour at 830am, which meant we had to be up for our bus ride to the harbour before that, and eating breakfast well before that. I slept hard in my air conditioned room, the last for a week. I was going to miss that luxury. It gets very hot and humid out on the islands. Smuggler's Cove breakfast was a buffet of random things like fruit and instant coffee. I hated drinking instant coffee in the Ireland hostels years ago- this is what that reminded me of. I normally drink 2-3 cups of coffee a day back home, so my one solid cup of coffee was being downgraded further lol. Oh well, when in Rome. The big modern bus drove a hoarde of us to the harbour for our water taxi. We ... read more

Today was a travel day from Rotorua to Auckland to Nadi, Fiji. We heard a rumor of bad traffic near Auckland so we hit the road at 7am, hopefully the last of the early days this trip. We decided to get driving and then stopped on the way at the most random food place in a rundown town. Literally, a small shop on the country crossroads. I ended up with a soggy but good sandwich, a custard pie and something colorful but unidentifiable. Me, "what's that?" Pointing at brightly colored cake. Cafe guy, "a Lolly cake. Me, "what's in it?" Cafe guy, "Lollies." Hm. Candy cake? 'Cause the closest thing to a lolly that I grew up with is a lollipop, and that's candy. So let's just run with it. And it was delicious, too. Tasted ... read more

A big 'Bula!' to everyone today from an extremely friendly Fiji. We write poolside, in the shade, after a misguided day in the sun yesterday left us resembling a couple of lobsters. We also write as America, 17 hours behind, goes to the polls after nothing short of a brutal campaign. By the time this post is written however, H. D. R. Clinton will inevitably be the new President. The last week has seen its fair share of travelling as we headed trans-Pacific, leaving behind a month of magnificent memories in Latin America, and arriving in Auckland after fast forwarding a day through crossing the date line. Despite hearing mixed reviews about Auckland as a soulless metropolis that didn't represent the true Kiwi spirit, we were very pleasantly surprised. With the sun shining we strolled through ... read more

The seven hour flight out of Ecuador and South America led me to a quick layover in El Salvador where I would board another plane for the six hour flight to LAX. I was back in America. I am always a little nervous when crossing borders and going through immigration, but in the USA I have no such fears. What, they are not going to let me in my own country? The border agent thoroughly questioned me about my six months in South America and about what I was doing there to which I replied “as little as possible”. Next up was what do I do for work, to which I replied “working is for suckers.” He did not like this and I then found myself into secondary screening where my bag was ripped apart searching ... read more

Geo: -17.61, 177.45With the Melanesian Championships finished and Fletcher's course complete we had one day where we could just be tourists. Fletcher had made sure we could have a night to go to First Landing, a resort just north of Nadi on the road to Lautoka.. He had been there several times before and wanted to take me to dinner there. Last week we decided to stay there too so I went online and booked the last available roo, Tis happened to be a Villa which originally was priced at $236. Though that was more expensive than we would usually pay the description of the place told me there were two King sized beds, a living roo and kitchen. So I thought it was worth it. It turned out that the price quoted was in US ... read more

Geo: -18.1333, 178.417The Melanesian Championships started with an Opening Ceremony on Wednesday Night, It included a march past of all the teams and a cultural dance display. There was a large Australian contingent and Fiji had entered both a major team and a development squad. The proceedings included a display of Indigenous dancing and male bravado which was very entertaining.During the three days of the championships I fulfilled a variety of roles. I was appointed as a Chief Judge for field events so over the three days I chiefed a High Jump, a long jump, three discus throws and five shot puts. The weather was great, no rain and very mild days. During the events I worked with several local officials and was most impressed by their enthusiasm and willingness to learn the event. Each day ... read more

Geo: -18.1333, 178.417The weather has remained cool and overcast during the past three days. The temperature has been in the low twenties but the annoying light rain and cool winds have made outdoor activities unpleasant. Fletcher and I went over to the Peninsula Hotel on Saturday evening to have a drink with the course participants. There are several Aussies and New Zealanders as well as coaches from Tuvalu, Samoa, Tonga etc. Andrea, an American now living in Guam, bought us the first drink. She is a lovely lady and we had a great chat about American politics as well as other topics. I had gone into the library earlier in the day to try to find out how the Australian election was faring. It is much closer than I thought it would be and it looks ... read more

Geo: -18.1333, 178.417The last two or three days have been quiet but relaxing. Fletcher starts lecturing each morning at 8am so is up and away by 7-45am. I take my time but have usually got organised by 10am. On Wednesday morning I walked to the Fiji Museum which is just the other side of Albert Park, set in the beautiful Thurston Gardens. I had visited here nearly 40 years ago so thought I would take another look. It is a mall building but has several rooms depicting the history and culture of Fiji. The largest room contains, among other artefacts, an outrigger canoe which was the main form of transport before white settlement. This one is grand with a cabin on deck. I spent a pleasant hour or so wandering through the displays and reviving my ... read more

Geo: -18.1333, 178.417Fletcher was asked to run a Jumps Coaches course in Suva leading up to the Melanesian Championships and so I was pleased to be able to go with him. It must be at least 20 years since I have been to Fiji so it was time to revisit a country I had enjoyed previously. We first flew to Brisbane where after a short wait we boarded a Fiji Airlines plane for Suva. It was full and we were seated around the middle which meant that when the meal was served we were one of the last to receive it. Fortunately it was only a 3 hour flight so the time passed quickly.Om arrival at Nadi we had to change terminals to catch a plane for Nausori, the airport which serves Suva. Here we ran into ... read more
