The weather has remained cool and overcast during the past three days. The temperature has been in the low twenties but the annoying light rain and cool winds have made outdoor activities unpleasant. Fletcher and I went over to the Peninsula Hotel on Saturday evening to have a drink with the course participants. There are several Aussies and New Zealanders as well as coaches from Tuvalu, Samoa, Tonga etc. Andrea, an American now living in Guam, bought us the first drink. She is a lovely lady and we had a great chat about American politics as well as other topics. I had gone into the library earlier in the day to try to find out how the Australian election was faring. It is much closer than I thought it would be and it looks like there won't be a result for a while.
12 of us then went to the Maya Dhaba and had a banquet dinner. We are becoming known by the owner there. It was a tasty meal, helped along with some wine and the ability to check the internet. Everyone got along well including the guys from Samoa and Tonga. The next morning it was still overcast
but Fletcher finally was able to run some practical sessions as the stadium was now available. He didn't have many athletes to demonstrate though, so returned to the hotel about 3-30. In spite of the cloud cover we went down to the pool. The water was very cold but he did his exercises while I had a swim. We were joined in the bar later by Anthony, Lars and Geoff Martin who had just arrived. After a couple of glasses of wine, Lars drove us to the main strip where we had a good Chinese meal at Fong Lee's, again with free internet!! The chicken and sweetcorn soup was particularly good.
Monday I woke feeling "dodgy". After Fletcher went I rested for a short while and then set out for the Archives as I had promised Fletcher I would try and finish what I had started. Unfortunately there was another lady already on the microfilm machine. I went instead to the library and caught up with email and the election news. After a small lunch at the Bad Dog I returned to the Archives but that girl was still there. I gave up and returned to the hotel. When Fletcher came
back about 4-30 I was feeling a little better. We met down in the bar at 5-30pm and were pleased to see Trevor and Linda Spittle. They have the room next to ours. After a drink downstairs we took them to Maya Dhaba for a lovely meal again.
Today I returned to the Archives. The same lady was already there but this time the archivist took me into the old building where there was another machine and I spent two hours looking through the newspapers. I did find some results, but I was disappointed there weren't more. I then walked across the canal and down to the fruit and vegetable markets. I always enjoy seeing the local produce and there was certainly plenty of fresh fruit and veggies on sale. There were also some unusual specimens. One stall had some plates of food and I asked what the small green ”berries” on the plate were. I was told, sea grapes! Not sure about them!! I bought some wine in a different supermarket before returning to the Bad Dog for lunch. Lots of the Aussie officials have now arrived and I ran into several along the way. We have the Course
Dinner tonight and then Officials' meetings tomorrow. Competition starts on Thursday so then I will be very busy!
