So Musket Cove has its quirks... When I got in the other day I was immediately ambushed by mosquitos. Definitely need to load up on bug spray here! There are also these little brown frogs hoppin' around everywhere that I don't think are doing a very good job at eating these mosquitos. So cute yet so useless! The beach here is interesting too- The water is not very clear as there seems to be some type of algae growing from the ocean floor that I don't particularly enjoy stepping in. You can see it during low tide when all the water disappears from the cove, also not totally ideal. Guess that's why they put a huge swimming pool right behind it. So I went over to the next resort down the beach and out of the ... read more

Bula! Greetings from Mana Island! After 25 grueling hours of traveling from NY, a layover in LA, connecting to Nadi, Fiji and a ferry ride later, I am finally here! I was so tired I barely knew what day it was, especially with the whole hopping over the international dateline maneuver, so I checked into my romantic island bure for one at the Mana Island Resort, ate lunch, and passed out on the beach. It is gorgeous down here! Clear turquoise waters, white sand, and everything tropical island dreams are made of. And the beaches at the resort come with lounge chairs under thatched straw umbrellas that kept me from burning to a crisp while completely out cold that first day. So after peeling myself off the beach and wiping the line of drool off my ... read more

I have to be honest. We spoiled ourselves in Fiji. After all our good intentions of staying at the backpackers didn't pay off, and we were desperate for something to book quickly, we chose Treasure Island and stuck it on the credit card. Ok it was a bit naughty of us, but after reading some reviews of some of the backpacker islands we thought we probably made the right decision - it would be awful to go to Fiji and find that it was grubby, noisy, glass on the beaches hell... So Treasure Island it was! We flew into Nadi at about 4pm and found the Raffles Gateway Hotel to be very nice - and right opposite the airport, couldn't have been easier. We jumped in a taxi to head off into Nadi to get a ... read more

Polly: Before leaving Auckland we checked the weather and were a bit disappointed to see that for the next 2 weeks the Fiji forecast was for rain, rain, rain and a few thunderstorms. As we landed on Friday evening the sky was grey but the rain was holding off. It was uncomfortably hot though and felt like it needed to rain. The airport was lovely and air-conditioned so we hung out there for a bit trying to work out where to go. We went into one of the travel agents in arrivals and spent an hour or so putting together a bit of a plan. This is somewhere where an internet search prior to arrival is pretty fruitless, compared to some good local knowledge. A guy had dropped by the travel agent earlier that day promoting ... read more

Fiji I would just wanted to thank you all very much for the kind birthday emails. I had the most wonderful birthday just as you said, lazing in the sun on a beautiful white beach on one of the Islands of Fiji. We met a lovely couple from Brisbane who we spent the day snorkelling and kayaking with. We went to a gorgeous lookout at the highest point of Mana island and watched the sun set on a secluded beach before heading to the best restaurant for a 5 course meal right by the water. We watched and crab race and met our friends for cocktails, as usual we were the last ones up, still chatting after the bar had closed. It was an amazing birthday! Tony was so sweet and even treated me to a ... read more

Our second day here at Matamanoa. I just can't describe how beautiful it is here. It is quite romantic and so many places to find peace and quiet. Most of the couples here are on honeymoon or celebrating something special. The best thing about this island is the many different activities they have to do here, and it is all free! Yesterday we went snorkeling and it was awesome. It was like looking at a huge fish tank with a 30 foot cliff. So many different and colorful fish! I was hoping to see a turtle, but no. We will try again today. Jeff also went hand line fishing (I was going to go but did not feel like being on a rocky boat). He caught a barracuda, and a red coral trout. They let him ... read more

Bula from Fiji! We arrived around 5am today, October 28 2008. Yes, we are ahead :) Just wanted to let everyone know that we landed safely and we are enjoying our stay here so far! When we arrived at the airport, we were transported via helicopter to a secluded island called Matamanoa. I can't describe how beautiful everything is! We passed many little islands and coral reefs. We already have our snorkeling and fishing trips booked for today. Well our time online is limited so I will write more later. ... read more

16/10 Uneventful flight of 10 hours (our longest), tiring to say the least. Lost a day flying over the date line as well. Arrived in Fiji around 6am and were met by a Navini rep. who drove us a marina where we were picked up by Islands' boat. They had problems restarting it so we were offered drinks at the cafeteria, coffee for me, beer for Jac and Joodz. After half an hour we were off, an excellent way to start our stay with a 40 minute boat ride across the Mamanuca Strait to Navini, our tropical paradise. We stepped off the boat into the shallows, the water was lovely and warm, met by the ever smiling Fijian assistant manager and escorted to the office/shop/library for a run down on the island, our Bure was ready ... read more

Today was mostly hangover but this was helped by a quick dip in the sea. The cool, clear water was an excellent solution to the throbbing head. We managed some breakfast and then sat around chatting and attempting to fill in the details from the night before. At 11.30am we said our good byes to the people who were leaving and welcomed in the next visitors. The day was very chilled and we just hung around on the beach with the occasional game of frisbee or volleyball. The evenings entertainment was cross-dressing and a Miss/Mr World Competition. Mark and Dale quickly jumped at the chance to dress as women and were soon in their full attire, make-up and all! The evening was great and Mark was very pleased with his joint 3rd placement. From then on, ... read more
