Bula!! When you think of Fiji, you think of sun, white sand, palm trees, and a lot of relaxing - coincidentally - that's how my time was, well mostly! Nadi Clear skies as we flew into Nadi, and it was noticably hotter when we "disembarked" the plane! It wasn't long before we experienced "Fiji Time" - normally it's great, no rushing around, just a "when you're ready" philosophy. But when you're sitting in an airport waiting for a shuttle bus....? The Nomads Skyodge hostel was nice, if a little isolated. The $10 meal would only have filled a 5 year old!! Amy and I organised our week out in the islands that night. took a little time but worked out well in the end - we got some great deals! We balanced the week into 2 ... read more

Just over two weeks into my travels and I have already visited three countries… Without planning on going to Fiji, I got an invitation to go there which I couldn’t refuse (plus given that I don’t really have any ‘official’ plans it is easy for me to just hop on a plane to wherever). Another early start at Sydney airport - becoming a bit of a trend - and then it was on the pacific blue flight to Nadi (pronounced Nan-di, as with every Fijian word there seems to be a rogue ‘n’ after vowels!). Coming into land and seeing the colour of the ocean was breathtaking, then we had to work out how to get to ‘our’ island… This involved a negotiation with an afro-haired lady in the ‘Beachcomber Resort Island’ office at Nadi airport, ... read more

Day 181 - Wednesday 19 March Russ bank card didn´t arrive so it looks like i´m off to the islands on my own. After waiting around for ages finally the boat arrived to take me to Mana island. With other islands nearby with names like Treasure Island and Robinson Crusoe island it should be a mini paradise. Its also close to the island where they filmed Castaway (The Tom Hanks version). It certainly looked great as the boat passed by all these deserted islands. Unfortunately the sea turned really choppy as we hit a mini storm and I ended up totally drenched. On arrival we were greeted by some Fijian welcome performance but I was cold and wet and wanted to get changed so I didn´t appreciate it perhaps how I should have done. Although overcast ... read more

Since I last updated the blog, a lot has happened. After all our visitors left us (sniff sniff!) at the end of January, we started the job hunt to keep ourselves fed for the last stretch in Melbourne. But then, Claud got a phonecall to go home, as her dad had had a heartattack. She got to spend two days with him before he passed away on January 26th. Thankfully, Claud is back with us now, in fantastic spirits, despite the hard times she and all of her family have gone through. Our next, and final, three months of travelling are in honour of Jim. So after the three gobshites were reunited, it was time to say goodbye to Melbourne - not an easy task! Myself and Sib went to Babka Bakery on Brunswick Street about ... read more

One of the problems with visiting these regions filled with tropical islands is trying to figure out which island to visit! They all look so nice its so hard to choose… Thankfully in Fiji we had some help at the tourist office and choose Mana Island where we were to spend 4 days. It was described as a beautiful island with great beaches and snorkelling, with a tiny local community so we could actually get to meet some locals. It turned out to be a very accurate description, but they forgot to mention that the people there are fantastic! People were so friendly and welcoming that at first our suspicious backpackers’ minds were convinced they had an ulterior motive… But they didn’t, they were just great people who were happy to have us visit their island ... read more

Christmas in Paradise with Friends. Writing a day by day travel blog for Fiji was a consideration however after the first few days of laying in a hammock and doing very little I have reconsidered and decided to write more of a summary of a brilliant two weeks in paradise. I arrived in to Nadi airport on the 13th December and took the advice of the travel guides and made straight for the Yasawa Flyer, a catamaran that serves the Mamanuca and Yasawa island groups. My first stop was Waya island and the Octopus resort recommended in the Lonely Planet. A good choice with a very relaxed friendly atmosphere, a good clean dormitory and first class food. The resort is located in a sheltered bay with the open air bar and dining room fronting onto the ... read more

An 11 hour flight put us over the date line minus a day in the southern hemisphere Fiji islands. Waking up on the flight to find a large Fijian man sitting next to me was a shock to say the least. Space being at a premium i later spread out to hog our precious extra seat. Stepping off the plane we breathed in the warm humid air tinged with a scent of smoke, the sugarcane. We were introduced to Fiji time straight away with a large immigration queue. How long does it take to stamp a plane full of Americans and Aussies in? Fijian guys with ukeles played to sooth the crowd. We received our obligatory shell necklace next and were shown to our booking office to receive instructions and vouchers for our holiday. It was ... read more

After several days spent on Viti Levu it was time to explore some of the beaches Fiji had to offer. Boarding at Denerau port was a pleasure, very clear and understandable even we could work it out. Our first stop was Bounty Island, just 30 minutes ride away. From afar the island looked gorgeous and as we neared we were not disappointed. The resort was lovely, lots of space and all the bures lead directly onto the beach. Soon as we were settled we legged it straight into the sea and explored the colourful sealife for as long as possible before getting too burned and having serious snorkelling mask impressions around our faces. After a tiring day swimming, lazing in the hammock and slobbing on the beach it was time to take full advantage of happy ... read more

Bula everybody, so first off a bit of a rant, I left the cook Islands on the 26th of October and had a four hour flight but didnt arrive in Fiji until the 28th, the 27th did not exist in my world this is due to crossing the international date line. Im annoyed at this as it is one day i can not get back, the world has thrown me for a loop, im confused and bewildered, but i have thought of a way to get around this, basically once i am done with this trip, i will have to go on another one but in the other direction so i can get my day back otherwise i will be in a state of time confusion forever and that just cant be so, surely you all ... read more
