After what was an unnecessarily late night at Skylodge we managed to drag ourselves out of bed and get down to reception to book our onward island journey for that day so we wouldn't have to stay another night there, waste another night in Nadi and generally be very disappointed with ourselves. Well I say we, me first, then Kev and Sarah and eventually The Chief after much coaxing. We three had decided to go to Beachcomber for a few reasons: The first was the whole "party island" reputation so we felt we really should at least drop in on the place, the second was that Andy "Human Jukebox" Smith was there as we'd learnt the day before, and the third was we had neither the will nor the inclination to do any research into going ... read more

Apres the Shark dive we took the rickety open sided local bus back to Nadi. Being a Sunday morning it was filled with locals on their way to and from Church. Sundays in Fiji are all about the church. Nothing is really open and all around you the churches which line the fields and beachsides are in full song literally. It is really nice and something different to see a real sense of culture still pervades this tourist hotspot. In fact the whole of fiji oozes this laid back local feel in abundance. It is like a step back in time. The buses have no sides and the locals are so friendly. A far cry from the misery of the number 8 which awaits us so soon. Best make the most of it. I'm now in the airport at Fiji on my way to the Cooks. Last 3 nights in Fiji were spent on Beachcomber Island, what an amazing place! Me and Jim practically had the best room on the island and it became quite hot spot! The island itself has an 85 bed dorm so there is us with a beachfront Bure and me a double bed, poor old Jim in the single!! Did te usual things on a tropical island, jet skiis, parasailing, beach volleyball and partied till we puked! yesterday we hired some Kayaks and ended up rowing to the nearest island (Treasure Island) for a beer with a couple of guys. Nice idea, didn't look too far we thought! It was bloody miles away, got the blisters on my hands to prove it, still got ... read more

Oceania » Fiji » Mamanuca Islands » Mana Island September 23rd 2006

We made a nervous return to Mana Island, keen not to repeat our previous experience of a bure full of monstrous spiders (refer 2002 blog entitled "Sacred Peaks and Eight Legged Freaks"). We booked a first floor room in a still-rustic looking building in the hope that Mana's spiders weren't of the climbing variety. I'm not quite sure what we were thinking - I'm pretty certain there's no such thing as a non-climbing spider. This all quickly became a bit irrelevant. We were told that we couldn't have our chosen room type for the first couple of days, and were instead shown to a ground floor room in a very modern block on the South Beach. We were about as far away from the arachnid infested bure of our previous visit and still be on the ... read more

Had a day trip out to the Islands of Fiji today, amazing!! First stop was Bounty Island where they actually filmed love island the first year. What a top place, the beaches were paradise and the snorkeling was top notch. I wish I had stayed on this place, 25 quid a night and I'm not kidding 6 to 1 ratio female to male!! Fell in love with an Aussie bird, blonde yahoo!! We missed our ferry to the next island, so blagged a private transfer from the island, probably our fault but they felt guilty at the end of my winge!! Next Island was south sea island, free BBQ (all I could eat) and free bar!! Did some canoeing, volleyball and went in a submarine to see the coral and fish!! Best islands ever, I'm thinking ... read more

Oceania » Fiji » Mamanuca Islands » Castaway Island September 16th 2006

We spent the first week of this sojourn at Castaway Island in the Mamanuca Group off Viti Levu's west coast. It was all very peaceful and relaxing. We spent most of our time lazing on the beach or by the pool, interspersed by the occasional very competitive family table tennis tournament. We still think that this is one of Fiji's very best islands - just rustic enough whilst still being very comfortable, great food, excellent beach and snorkeling, and super friendly and relaxed staff. After a few days Issy and I decided that we'd been overdoing the relaxing just a bit too much, so we made the brave decision to leave our offspring sleeping and head off for a morning hike up to the island's peak. The path was steep and rocky. Would we make it ... read more

Just a quick one to say I've had an amazing week- Diving with sharks, laying on the beach and meeting fun people while being cared for by Tiki (the receptionist). I'm heading down to the coral coast now with 4 others. I'll show you photos and tell you all about Mana and the coral coast next week as the bus leaves soon. Love to all T... read more

It's been over a week since I last posted a blog but I can safely say that it has been the most uneventful week of my life. Including university! Spent 5 days on the island of Mana - staying at a family run (meaning very basic) place on a beautiful little island - doing absolutely nothing! Went to the beach for a sunbathe, a swim and a snorkel, checked out the views out to other little islands and that's it! Told you it was uneventful! Oh - and we took part in a Kava Ceremony - a welcoming ceremony for guests to the village where you have to drink Kava, sounds easy enough! Kava is the root of the plant which is grounded into a powder and then mixed with water. The end result is a ... read more

Thursday 29th June: I was up at 6.30am, trying not to wake the other eight people in my dorm. I went and showered I realised I was about to embark on the most remote part of my trip so far and had just run out of shower gel and deodorant! Arse! So, no internet access for three weeks - means no contact with distant friends and no shower gel or deodorant - means no making of 'close' friends either!! LOL To top it all of, it is raining heavily. Not having a good start to Fiji... I went down for breakfast, I saw on the menu 'Full Fijian Breakfast', which was like a Full English. "Mmmmmm, yes please" I thought. I went to reception to get my breakfast ticket (you get a free 'Awesome breakfast' with ... read more
