After a stressful last 24 hours in the UK realising we need visas for a 7 hour stopover in the US, trying desperately to decide how many bikinis to take and what factor suncream, we made it to the airport and on that plane for our big trip. About 3 days later (approx, who knows!) we landed in Nadi and get ourselves on the first boat of the day to an island, Mana being our first stop. We had to let go of our organised laywer selves and embraced 'Fiji Time', where any time could be +/- a few hours. We were initially excited by our 'private boat' to the island but this soon diminished when we all turned various shades of green. Okay, imagine a holiday brochure with perfectly clear turquoise waters and white sand ... read more

Next and final stop was Tokoriki Resort, one of two resorts on Tokoriki Island in the northern Mamanucas. It was adults only. We hadn't been to one of those before so we weren't quite sure what to expect. You had to be at least fourteen before they'd let you stay there. Troy was exactly that, so we only just scraped in. We got off the ferry and walked through the pool area to reception. It was so quiet. We were too scared to open our mouths. Most of the other guests seemed to be floating silently on sunbeds in the pool. Splashing was clearly banned, and we began to wonder whether swimming might be a no-no as well. The guests that weren't in the pool were all lying noislessly on sunbeds, the silence broken only by ... read more

I think we might have become a bit addicted to Fiji. Then again, what's not to get addicted to - balmy weather, palm fringed beaches, super friendly locals..... OK, so they might have the occasional military coup that makes headlines back home, but the locals know which side their bread's buttered on. The coup leaders leave the tourist hotspots well alone, and any visitors who've been there during any of these so-called uprisings have apparently scarcely been aware that they were even happening. Now I know that if you travel often enough eventually one of your flights is going to be delayed. Our turn had come. We landed in Brisbane to discover that our midnight flight was now not going to leave until 6am. We'd also managed to miss the last transfer bus for the night ... read more

... read more

Tagestouren kosten hier generell ca. 130-150 Dollar, also umgerechnet 60-70 Euro. Dafür gibt’s ... read more

Saturday 26th February – Fiji Bound Packed up the van and left it in Auckland, to fly out to the beautiful Fiji islands: Fiji Time – As we fly into Fiji, we realise that time starts to warp in a strange island way. The bus to the village might be here some time, or maybe we’ve missed the last one – who knows! Express Bus – A crowded two hour bus trip in pitch black with rain lashing down is only partially lifted by the film (Universal Soldier) with soundtrack reverberating throughout the bus. Homestay – Finally the bus stops and disgorges us into the hands of our host, Sake and then the wonderful Fijian feast prepared by his lovely wife Toupoe. Oceania » Fiji » Mamanuca Islands » Beachcomber January 5th 2011

Unfortunately the sun at breakfast didn't last and so we began our NYE drinking with our new friends from the US of A in the rain! Later that afternoon we boarded the ferry and waved goodbye to Mana and set off to the party island of Fiji - Beachcomber!!! The island has a capacity of just 250 people but tonight this tiny island was packed and we soon got into the festivities! Later in the night there was some excitement over some famous people who we had no recollection of whatsoever but we decided to get in on the action anyway and ended up sitting with the stars of Australian Rugby League!! We ended up spending most of the night with them in between visits to the spa on the beach, the cute little church (randomly!!) ... read more

Today we began our Island hopping - first stop Mana Island! On the boat journey we went past some amazing islands that you could probably walk across in 5 minutes before hopping off at the stunning Mana island, surrounded by crystal clear waters! On the pier we were welcomed by the traditional singing and when we went to get our bags we were told they would be taken for us - luxury! We were given a tour of the resort which rather exceeded our expectations as it was very luxurious considering we had booked the cheapest hostel! But during the welcome drinks we were soon crashed back to ground when our accommodation voucher informed the staff that it was in fact too good to be true!! We were asked to identify our luggage leave immediately having ... read more

It’s my final full day and night in Fiji and what a great way to spend it! First thing this morning I took the bus back to the Denarau Marina to catch one of the ferries. I rode out to Mana Island where I then transferred to the Seaspray – a tall sailing ship. Right away we were greeted with champagne and snacks for a light breakfast. We sailed around Mana and headed off to the West, past more of the Mamanuca Islands. We were headed for Mondriki – the uninhabited island where the movie Castaway was filmed. We anchored off shore and I jumped into the water. I swam/snorkeled my way along the island’s reef and eventually reached the beach. Mondriki is so beautiful. It’s amazing how even though a major Hollywood movie filmed there ... read more
