well... After about 20 hoursof flight we all found ech other in Brisbane, Austrilia awaiting the last leg of our journey. So far we have had several interesting happenings. 1st Deena started having chest pain while at out house while loading her bags. Normally I wouldn't pay too much attention but seeing as she recently had a pneumothorax, it was concerning to me because if she wentinto a pressurized cabin she could die. Well she did not have a reoccurrance of the condition so every thing was fine and her pain went away. The next mis hap is the tail falling off the air plane we are supposed to take to PNG. We are still waiting to see how tht turns out. We have recently been informed that Pete and Deena as well as Greg are ... read more

Who said surfing was easy?? Trust me it's not! I took a 4-hour surfing lesson and wow, I think i never swallowed so much salt water in my entire life! I was first picked up around 1pm by the two instructors with their mini bus and all the surf boards. The intructors were two sexy Australians dudes...the lesson was going to be interesting ;) They drove us south of Byron Bay, around 25 minutes south to Flat ROck beach, where there was no one to disturb us. The rips and currents are pretty strong in Australia so we had a 15 min. talk on security and where not to go. Then, a good 20 min, explaning to us how to stand up on our board. Seems pretty easy to do, especially if you're on the beach. ... read more

Here we are in Oz, having survived the overnight flight. We got picked up and taken to Calypso hostel, which was quite a cool place with a pool and a good all you can eat buffet for 8 dollars every evening..themed ofcourse! We briefly contained our tiredness in the swimming pool until si crashed out about midday.. he would not get up for another 28 hours! crazy! will and i survived until 5pm with a trip into cairns centre where i admired a fetching baby-blue billabong beanie...in will's words "very gangsta"! We too then crashed and awoke 22 hours later, with new roommates! 2 guys from switzerland and one from litchenstein..really nice guys, had just learnt englidh in sydney for a few months.. the next evening we went out with them and explored cairns' coyote night ... read more

We arrived in Perth at 3am this morning, I am absolutely shattered having had maybe 4 hours of sleep since Monday. The trip here in total took just over a day, including a 13 hour flight to Singapore and a 6 hour flight from there to Perth. We stopped off in Singapore for a slightly surreal couple of hours, wandering around the airport in a sleepy daze. Rather amusingly the hand drying machines in the toilets were manufactured in Guildford and the airport has a swimming pool. Once we arrived in Perth (at about 12.30am) we then had to work our way through immigration and find our way to the hostel via a rather dodgy bus driver (had a habit of running red lights and hitting the curb), and we were finally in bed at just ... read more

Maar goed, we waren dus gebleven ... read more

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JULES - bet it was the soberest birthday you've had for many a year !!! hope jingo spoiled you and bump ! Just spent 2 fabulous days in bryon bay - it was a bit of shock sharing the beaches with so many people after all the deserted coastal retreats we'd just come from. The atmosphere and nightlife here is fantastic as there are loads of backpackers and tourists. Chose a lovely hotel for 2 nights - Bay View - recently renovated architect designed rooms just across the road from the beach, fantastic location. First day we spent on the beach enjoying yet more wave-bombing and watching the mad surfer-dudes cruise the waters (although we still weren't brave enough to try out the surfing ourselves). Second day was the national holiday Anzac day but ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Manly April 26th 2006

After reaching Manly via the very scenic route of Sydney Harbour I felt a bit more at home being on the water for a start was good and I stepped off the ferry and instantly felt a cool calm feel to Manly and the entire goings on there. Walking in the direction that I knew the beach was in I clapped eyes on why so many people out here surf the waves were constant and looked from my very limited knowledge of surfing fairly big and challenging for some others were easily taking them in there stride. I decided to come here to find work and see what the Diving scene would be like in Sydney and the surrounding areas. I walked back up the Corso as it is called and found the Board Riders and ... read more

We departed Airlie Beach on the way to a place called Townsville, where we were due to catch a ferry across to Magnetic Island. The journey was 4 hours with a very enthusiastic bus driver, who doubled up as a tour guide and supplied some comical releif as we ventured through the passing towns and villages etc, explaining what there was to do in each place and how many people lived there and any other interesting facts and figures he had. This is the first bus driver that has done such a thing so was relatively amusing and entertaining. We arrived in Townsville at about 2 o'clock and had to get a bus to the ferry terminal. We had an hour-or-so's wait at the terminal before our ferry crossing, waiting in a typically dingy and terrible ... read more

After an awesome 6 weeks, we've finally left Asia and are now in Oz. After more overnight travelling, we arrived in Cairns at something like 6 in the morning, I don't really remember, and headed off to immigration. Let the good first impressions of Australia start! Somehow, at two possible places to get stopped, we mananged to get stopped 3 times, and the final and in my opinion funnest time was the last, when they searched literally everything in all 3 of our bags....good times! After that we headed off to the Calypso Hostel, where after trying to briefly battle the tiredness in the pool for a bit, we all gave up and went to bed, Si managing a hugely respectable 28 hours (more of a small coma than a sleep) and me and Bish only ... read more
