Having left Sydney we drove to Canberra, primarily to sort out our visas for China and Vietnam. Mark had already been to Canberra with his friends but for Lorna's benefit we did the touristic things, like visit Parliament. We then got back on the road to Melbourne. When we arrived in Melbourne we checked out the city briefly before heading down to Phillip Island to see the colony of Blue Penguins (or Little Penguins as they call them in Australia). Sadly it was tipping it down so we got soaked watching them coming home from the sea to their nests. There were some 6,000 of them though, a lot more than we saw in New Zealand! On our way out after the 'show' we rescued a Shearwater bird who was sat in the middle of the ... read more

Okay here begins my travel log for 2006. After travelling extensively last year I have decided to take up the opportunity to live in England for 6 months once more and continue to travel also. This doesn't come without trepidation, considering I did do it last year and feel I maybe covering my tracks again. Last year I was lucky enough to live in England, play cricket and work, and in my 5 month stint there I also managed to fly out and visit Turkey, where I saw the battlefields at Gallipoli (something I think most Australians should do) and Portugal. I also visited a fair few places within England, with the added bonus of not living far outside of London meant I could get in there quite regularly. After my time there I did a ... read more

It's been a fair few years since I've grazed my knees, but I trudged out of the water, feeling like I'd been in a cold fast spin cycle: bloody knees, red-raw arms, cramp in my legs, but hey, none of that matters when you've had the experience of standing up on a surf board - even if it was only for 10 seconds!... read more

April 26 We had a nice long sleep in and FINALLY got moving by 1. Tom and I went and bought supplies for sandwiches for a Mid-River Picnic. Our crab friends weren’t there because the damn birds scared them away but the pelicans were still around. We ate our sandwiches made of cheap ham and 99cent mayo; I’m getting used to this cheap eats traveling. From there I brought the girls and Tom through a stream heading through the bush. I was scared shitless going through there as I was convinced there would be a croc or snakes jumping out at us. The bush formed a canopy slightly above our heads and the stream was skinny. We made it back our alive 20 minutes later and headed back for another relax night: cards and a chicken ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Alice Springs April 26th 2006

Well Alice Springs was not what I expected...I imagined it to be a lot bigger and maybe cleaner too... I stayed at a hostel with my German friend Daniela from the expedition. Seemed strange to have an outdoor pool at the hostel, guess I'll see alot more of that the further north I travel... Everyone from the expedition met up at a place called Bojangles, for dinner and drinks. It was a real outback place but in the middle of the town. With saloon type swinging doors and peanuts on the tables which you could just chuck the shell on the floor...every step was a crunch in there! The toilets were strange too, with door handles on the wrong sides and the sinks tap not controlling your sink, but one say the other end...was a quirky ... read more

Dad's here on holiday so I've started doing the tourist-y things again. MCG tours were quite interesting, especially since it was done up for the Commonwealth Games. We got to climb up to the higher levels which was really steep - my legs were wobbling even when I sat at the seats! I don't know how people sit all the way up there and not feel like they're about to fall.... read more

G'day! Arrrived in Cairns on Sunday 16th April at 4.15am local time. We were soon to find out that this wasn't the best time to try and find a youth hostel. We met a couple of english girls, Sian and Stacey, at the airport, who tagged along with us in search of a place to stay. We had a couple of places in mind, but they were either fully booked or the reception didn't open till 9am (Ahhhh, being jet lagged and generally knackered with a backpack on in parts unknown wasn't our idea of fun). As daylight was upon us we notice the "Lagoon", basically a big swimming pool just by the harbour, it's free to use and has barbecues set up all around it for everyones use. We decided to take a dip in ... read more

hello hello!! So I left off about to leave Rainbow Beach - Dave, Chris, and Shane - the lovely lads from Leeds were kind enough to give me a lift all the way to 1770. We ended up sharing a dorm, and that evening we were also joined by Orla (the Irish contingent from TEAM B of the Fraser Islanders). That evening Shane cooked a lovely pasta meal...and I went for a 'nap' - however, this short snooze turned into a much needed 12 hour sleep fest. The next day Dave, Orla and I went to a surf lesson! When we got to the surf shop, we were met by the owner of the store- who was the living, breathing generalisation that people make of surfer boys - long blond hair, each sentence ending with 'bro', ... read more

Well it's true we're not in Kansas anymore. In fact, we were never in Kansas, however, we were in New Zealand and now we are in the mighty land of OZ. So sorry it has been 17 days since our last update, but, come on now folks we are on vacation here. I will try to recap as succinctly as I can, though I do have a propensity for being verbose so you better make sure you are seated for this one ( I mean, really, you already ought to be seated as only overworked sales people with back problems stand while working at their computers). We left the Crums little strip of paradise and had a great ferry trip back to the North Island of New Zealand. Our first stop, back in Wellington, was a ... read more
