It started as a regular evening in the backpacker in Kununura. I joined a table with some mixture of people - French, Italian, English, 2 Germans. Somehow the converstion went to politics. The French girl was interested to know why our P.M. Sharon said that France was dangerous to Jews. From there it drifted to talking about the situation in Israel and also to anti-Semitism. This German guy said some annoying things from the start, as “why the Germans still pay HUGE amount of money to Israel, his generation pays for something they are not related to”. He argued that they pay a lot, not only to survivors. Then he also said that Germany has to always support Israel and he doesn’t like that. And then it really started: “The Jews just invented all that so ... read more

Dear all... We left Fremantle, having purchased our equipment - cooker, crockery, cuttlery, a blow-up bed, bedding, etc., and we have began our drive South. But we've had a good few days; we're now addicted to charity shops, where we got a load of matierial and stitched ourselves some curtains (Tazmanian Devil/Bananas in PJs!!) well into the night using the dingy light of our van! Which, by the way, we are loving! It's slowly becoming more organised as things have to be shifted around during the day - bags into front seats so we can inflate the bed (seats too lumpy & uncomfortable), then bags back again so we can set off. Haven't stayed 2 nights in one place for the last 5 days (feels like weeks!) and we've only just arrived at Margaret River! Here's ... read more

The local shearing shed costs $6 but is money well spent, they explain the whole process and show you how they shear the sheep. You got to hold the sheep and feed them which was cool. We moved into margaret river from there via the local chocolate factory and cheese shop, spent the night at margaret river. In the morning we decided to go to Sunflowers farm and it was there that i got the chance to feed a lamb and stroke a Kangaroo, very cool place mainly aimed at kids which suited me just perfect. It was from maggie river that we travelled down via the Hamelin bay, which is a very beautiful white sandy beach and then to Augusta. ... read more

Ok... on with the diaries! 18/06/05 Having eaten breakfast in the horrible half a shed-style 'kitchen', we drove to Yallingup Shearing Shed. A great expience and insight into the farm life, we saw demos of sheep being sheared (with volunteers!), watched the dogs round the sheep into their pen, and got to feed the lambs. The use collies and also Kelpies, which are collies crossed with a dingo - the only dog that walks on sheep! Together these dogs keep the sheep in line! Next we visited a Chocolate Factory, tasted some choccy samples and had the compulsory hot chocolate, mmmm!! A visit to Margaret River Cheese Factory and on to Margaret River itself! Stocked up on food supplies and made ourselves Nachos at a campsite - the kitchen was a palace compared to last night! ... read more

From Karijini you have to drive 1000 boring km with nothing on the way (except the town of Port Hedland where we stayed overnight - nice hostel but NOTHING to do), before you reach Broome. Broome is a good place to chill out a bit (or more than a bit when you don't pay a lot for a rental car). Marit and I decided we will all be better off parting here, and not going on to Darwin together. Unbelievably she tried not to pay all her share of the cost at the end, I was so glad that I didn't have to see her anymore! I spent one lovely day in Broome with Helen, who had to go back to Perth - that was known in advance, because she had to leave Australia already. So ... read more

G'day! Here we are in Perth, WA and just to keep you up to date... Finances = Green (possibly not for long now we're in Oz) Fitness = Amber (but getting better) Relationship = Green Arguments = Zero We've made it to Oz. We arrived in Perth on Sunday to a bit of rain (we think its following us!) after a fantastic end in South Africa. We spent 2 nights in wonderful 5-star luxury while on safari at Shamwari. The place itself was amazing and we were waited on hand and foot while the game drives were incredible. Considering we weren't really bothered about doing safari it has been the highlight of the trip so far. Mark was really good at spotting animals and when he spotted the hippo's before our ranger he was renamed 'imfubu' ... read more

After searching high and low for a whole day we finally found the perfect transport, a toyota tarago (tessy for short). The next day we were out of Fremantle and off on an adventure, we decided to head south for margaret river. Our first night was spent in Yalgorup and was there that i got to see my first Kangaroos. The next day took through Bunbury then busselton where we stayed the night. we did the tourist thing the next day, went down the jetty, had lunch by the sea and generally shopped in town. We spent that night still in busselton but another campsite where we met a lovely family who had bought a massive camper to take their two sons around oz. I have never seen a real ghost town. Until 1966 Wittenoom was a thriving town with the big asbestos mine in the nearby Wittenoom gorge. Then they discovered the danger of cancer from asbestos and they closed the mine. Most of the people left anyway as there were no jobs anymore and the WA government were determined to extinguish the town, maybe to prevent future law suits (even though several researches showed it wasn’t dangerous anymore). So they destroyed all public buildings, and only some private houses stayed, with no services. 20 people leave there now, determined to call it a home. Their houses are nice and surrounded by small gardens, but all around it’s simply deserted. It’s just unbelievable to see it, and when you see picture of the place at its glory days you ... read more

On Saturday we had this very long way, going inland to Karijini national park. It's an amazing place and we spent there 2 days hiking in magnificent narrow and beautiful gorges. On Sunday we visited the 4 gorges area. We went down the gorge called Weano. After a short walk you reach the narrow part. You walk with your legs on the walls of the gorge, the water under you in the middle. Well it's not dangerous as it may sound because the rocks there are layered and you actually have like stairs all the time. Then you get to handrail pool which seems like the end of the way. So it is the end if you are not willing to swim a bit in the freezing cold water... but eventually I decided to do it. So ... read more

As this is the first entry it is just to see if it works and that people recieve the update before i take off out of the country and there is no turning back!..... My itinerary as it stands begins with...
