Greetings from the west coast of Australia. A couple of days ago I was sitting in a boring city called Brisbane which is slightly north of Surfer's paradise. When I say boring, this is no understatement. There is quite honestly nothing to do. It's probably the one coastal city in Australia that doesn't even have a beach. The only fun memory I have of the place was watching a professional Australian ice hockey game. Apparently there is a pro ice hockey league here. The Brisbane blue tongues home arena seats about 300, but it was completely full and loud. I'm pretty sure everybody was there to watch former team Canada Olympian and NHL SUPERSTAR!!!!Rob Zamuner play for Brisbane. Anyways, as I mentioned, Brisbane was dull and I could feel my brain going into hibernation just by ... read more

Hi All these weeks are just flying by - another week and another few towns in western australia. Arrived in Broome and it's lovely weather. Got ourselves sorted at a nice campsite and booked in for a few activities - camel rides at sunset and deep sea fishing!! Broome is really nice - went out for a few drinks in chinatown and met some local pilots who are great craic. there was a great live band on so we just had a laugh and mingled with some other ozzies and tourists. laura and i are always a bit sceptical of men hanging around on their own in bars looking to start a conversation but we met some nice people in the end. One young guy told Laura she was so beautiful that she should be Miss ... read more

This morning was the last dash to Perth, just 160 km away. I stopped on the way in at Perth Dive Academy to get myself kitted up with some equipment for when I go back to Exmouth. I soon found that Diving is like any other hobby you can just keep spending. There seems to be no limit to the kind of stuff you can have and for some reason the most expensive equipment always looks the best. (Funny that). I was really good and left without buying anything, I did put quite a few things by for when I return though. My Next stop was the car hire garage, as the car seems to be making some very strange noises when I turn corners. It turns out that there is no oil in the power ... read more

We've now left the bouquet of barbed wire country behind and are now re-established in the same hostel in Perth we left in early 2003. It's a strange feeling because everything is so familiar, but it feels like someone has invaded your home. Australia is as welcoming and friendly ever (except for the b****** who flogged us an out of date phonecard) and the only major drawback is the beer seems to have gone up in price. We went out regardless to our Perth "office" in Northbridge for a few refreshments to debate our release from the open prison of South Africa. Perth has changed little since we were last here. Western Australia is apparently experiencing an economic boom and this is evident in the general upwardly mobile direction of the shops and of course, the ... read more

I'm sorry, I know it's been a long time, but just saving you from uneventful entries... So I'm still in Australia, still in Fremantle (near Perth) getting pretty cozy. The life here is very laidback and the hostel life and guests are quite the "family" since the majority of us here are longterm tenants. Our days consist of waking up (at some point) and run for the front desk to see if there are any odd jobs for the day in the area...mostly labouring, gardening, cleaning.. the jobs others don't really want to do, but whatever, it's cash-in-hand, so it's good. So far I have gardened on those jobs as the others usually want guys ... bah! Anyway, I've picked up some work finally. I actually clean the hostel on the weekends... what a job that ... read more

This is Perth. You can see the shadow of Perth this city in which I live since November. Yeah 8 months pass I can’t believe it. 8 months I’m here. 8 months I learn everyday, 8 months of Happiness . Of course during this time I thought about my friend in my home town, I thought about my family. I thought about my country. But I love be in Perth ,I love be in Australia I love spend time with aussie and other English speaker or other languages of course…;-) for me now it’s like if I’m in Switzerland I have my friend, I have a routine ,etc it s really hard to explain. Only the people who travel or had had the same feeling can understand .Now in 3 days I’m going to be back ... read more

As I left Geraldton the clouds closed in for the first time in months. Then the heavens opened and it started to rain. Listening to the radio on the way down you would have thought it was Christmas. Farmers and the like were literally dancing in the streets as this was the first rain they had seen for years. Probably wasn’t appropriate for me to ask when it was likely to stop!! When it does finally rain in WA it really knows how to. Coming from the UK I’m used to driving in rain but this was something else. The roads aren’t designed to channel the water away and it’s all you can do to hold onto the car as you aquaplane down the road with visibility not much greater than the end of the bonnet. ... read more

The dogs are settling in very well in their new red dirt surrounds. Coby’s cream coat now has a hue of red to it. After the break in the dogs add a bit of security to the house. I have had a job offer to work in the Post Office but before starting I have to have a medical and a Police clearance. The medical is organized for tomorrow and I visited the Police station last week. Easy process I was told just pay $43 and fill out the 1 page form. Yeah right!! The service officer left me to fill out the form while she took my drivers license to check on the computer. When she came back she said we will have a problem with this clearance as I (the other Carol Brown) had ... read more

Day 110 Friday 21 July 2006 -Day 112 Sunday 23 July 2006 Kununurra Happy Birthday Kim for Sunday After packing up we had just one more walk to do - Emma Gorge walk which was another goat track. At the end of it was a huge waterhole with lovely waterfalls flowing over it. We were all so hot we wanted to get in but it was absolutely freezing. I was the only one that went fully in. The kids put their feet in and Graeme went in for one second. He reckons that he could have put his beers in it to keep cold. We arrived back from El Questro today because Martin from the UK had arrived in Kununurra the day before and he only had until Sunday morning before he departed on a bus ... read more

We arrived back in Perth early doors on Wednesday as the car had to be returned at 10 am. Whits and Greeny took the trusty steed back celebrating the fact that we hadn’t damaged it in any way, when, as turning into the car hire place, they narrowly missed being hit by a guy pulling away from the lights - close call! Back at the Planet Inn we soon caught up with Kate and Lydia and the Irish lads (Andy, Foxy, Steve and Al) who we’d met before we went down south as well as some new characters the guys had made friends with whilst we’d been away. Whilst Smithers had some QT with her bed and book, Whits and Greeny mooched around and then strolled down into Leederville with Tom to get some supplies for ... read more
