Wow, i woke to sun shine, that hasn't happened ofter. My first stop today was down a 10km dirt road, (don't tell the car hire company) in search of a giant tingle tree. This tree has the biggest base in the world around 24 metres. Everything in this country seems to have to either be the biggest, tallest, greatest or fastest!! Either way the base of this tree is so huge you can drive your car through it. A little futher down more dirt roads, (sorry hire car company) and I reached the valley of the giants. If I hadn't seen enough trees in the last 2 days here were some more. This steel walkway takes you for a walk around the canopy which i suppose is slghtly more intesting. Once back on the ground I ... read more

This is the tale of my trip to the SouthWest of Western Australia. I really didn't know what to expect out of the "organized" trips many of the tour companies offer. I was put off by the fact that you see heaps of places but you don't "really" see any one place. Since I Wouldn't see much of Western Australia without doing one of these tours I said what the hell... I choose a shorter 5 day trip south of Perth to Esperance, Albany, Pemberton and Margaret River. Booked it through Perth City YHA with a company called "Western Exposure". The first day was a bit dull, but that was because its 800 km's from Perth to Esperance. We split up the day with the town of "York" (not bad for a pit stop but it ... read more

The final three days of our North Western AUS trip. A safari tent awaited us at the far tip of Cape Leveque - 4 hours drive up a dirt track from Broome. A track which car hire companies will not permit you to drive up. The solution was a lift on the mail run! Twice a week Cora, the outback postlady, and her dog George, leave Broome at 0400 and make the trip to the Cape, via deliveries in the Aboriginal communities of Beagle Bay and One Arm Point. 0400 is a bit of an early start, and Cora is something of 'a character', but it was worth it! Cape Leveque was spectacular. Our tent (more of a palace, really) was on a hillside and we watched the sun rise over the sea on one side ... read more

However, before we set off into the wilderness to go about planting a stupid amount of pine trees we spent three Weeks buming about in Perth, a very nice place even in winter. We stayed at a very cosy hostel which was more like a house with lots of dorm rooms where we met some very interesting people including a group on northern Irish blokes who really challanged Helen's ability to ... read more

It was off on the long and winding road towards Broome - well long (> 3000 kms to be exact), but not exactly winding unless you count a bend every couple of hundred kms. The rain was relentless on the first day, so it was just as well that we'd seen everything along the first stretch of the journey - the Pinnacles aren't quite the same through the clouds. The blue sky was back the next day, although there was some doubt as to whether the road into Kalbarri National Park would be open - it was and the morning was spent exlporing the gorges. The next port of call was Shell Beach and on to Monkey Mia, where the dolphins still cruise right up to the beach for a free feed and are as cute ... read more

Having said our farewells to Team Ireland and waved them off on their merry way back down to Perth, it was time for poor Floseph to become Floella as he was now stuck with the girls! The morning was spent exploring Knox Gorge, which had a particularly tricky descent into it, with it being very steep and having lots of loose rocks. As ever, it was worth the effort getting down there and we spent some time chilling out in the freshwater pools with Smithers and Flo going off on a kamikaze mission, balancing on fallen trees and the like in an attempt to see as much of the gorge as possible! Back up at the vans Smithers and Flo declared themselves ready to check out Joffre Falls and gorge, whilst Whits and Greeny, slightly gorged ... read more

The extremely bumpy and dusty drive along just a small section of the Gibb River Road was worth it to see Windjana Gorge - a sacred place to the aboriginal people - and our first crocodiles!!! These were fresh water crocs - not as big as the 'salties' - although not sure you'd want to put that to the test... After leaving Windjana we drove on towards Fitzroy Crossing on the Great North Rd ('great' due to the presence of tarmac!) where a tented cabin awaited us for the night. We didn't quite make it back off the dirt roads of the outback before dark - not aided by the headlights falling out of the hired landcruiser due to all the bumping about. Strange noises in the undergrowth (!) made the Blue Peter repair job we ... read more

So, at midnight tonight I'll be jumping on a plane bound for Canberra. I know Canberra's not that exciting but it'll be good to catch up with family and friends I haven't seen for ages. But right now I'm just sitting at home relaxing a bit and enjoying the peace and quiet cause for the next 2 months, I won't have much of it at all :) ... read more
