Port Hedland 22nd May 2012 In 1863 Peter Hedland, Master of the 16 ton cutter Mystery landed at Mangrove Harbour, now Port Hedland. An Iron Ore boom that began in the early 1960’s saw the town grow at a remarkable rate. Major expansion of Port Hedland took place in 1965 with the population exploding from a mere 1200 people to todays 15,000. Port Hedland handles the largest tonnage of any Australian Port with over 158 million tonnes of ore worth billions of dollars shipped each year. The 2.6 KLm long trains operated by BHP that carry the ore to the wharf areas are hard to miss. Salt product is another major industry with about 2 million tonnes exported each year. For you train buffs out there, (Malcolm), BHP set a record with the world’s longest train ... read more

The morning sun was heating up early so we set off on the 90 km journey out of Tom Price to Karijini National Park. The western side of the Park is primarily 4WD territory but to the east the roads are mostly sealed so that is where we headed. The Park is famous for its gorges and waterfalls and once we arrived at Dales Gorge we were greeted with A grade views from above. A steep climb down stairs carved into the side of the terrain had us at Fortescue Falls that flowed into a pool below and visitors were already taking advantage of the natural surroundings and taking a dip in nature’s finest. We then set off on a trek down the bottom of the Gorge towards a natural swimming hole. We saw warnings earlier at ... read more

Left karijini early in the morning and drove 300km to Port Hedland, the town itself is a mining and port town, so besides these two things, there are not many things to see... The majority of the iron oresmined in western Australia get transported either by road trains or by rail from the mines to Port Hedland for loading onto massive iron ore bulk carrying ships for export overseas... During February through to November (don't quote me on that though), you can take a tour of the BHP iron ore processing plant and watch the minerals been loaded onto massives ships, costs about $20 per person... Again if mining is your thing, otherwise, have a walk along the marina and check out the ships... So yeah, Port Hedland is rather boring, probably only worth a few ... read more

This blog has nothing to do with sight-seeing in Western Australia, instead it is about something really important I learned from an inspirational person I had the pleasure of travelling with, I won't mention the name, but you know who you are... For too long I have been running the same old hampster wheel, doing the same thing over and over, perhaps, it is necessary, because these things included tennis training, going to uni and working... The old saying goes you need an education and a decent jobs to support yourself, makes financial sense... I have done that, climbed the peaks, well half a peak of ITF pro-circuit tennis, made abit of money from that, then graduated from a medical sciences degree, currently studying another degree, got a job, earning good money... still in my early ... read more

I know why the majority of tourists fly into Broome. It is because the trip between Port Hedland and Broome is so boring. There is absolutely nothing inspiring about the landscape. Over four hundred kilometres of nothingness. We saw a couple of rocks, and stopped at two roadhouses. The second roadhouse had even less to offer than the first. Blah! We were going to spend the night at Pardoo roadhouse, but decided one would only do that if the car could go no further. So we travel onwards to Port Hedland. It was interesting approaching Port Hedland, from kilometres away, the view of the horizon indicated that it was an industrial town, and it is on a very grand scale. We passed a freight train on the way in that must have been at least one ... read more

19 Barn Hill R & R We’ve only moved about 120km this week as we’ve been seducted by the warm water, the long sandy beaches, the warm breezes, quaint open showers and toilets and dappled shade. Barn Hill Station is a low key camping ground at the edge of a magnificent sandy beach about 120km by road south of Broome. Its owned and run by the local run holders who farm 320,000 acres but only run 8,000 head of cattle. We had our first recommendation to come here in our 4th ever campground in Queensland. Apart from Chris and Lynne’s strong exhortation to visit, of course. As we slowly progressed across northern Australia, the name kept coming up again and again. They were right – it’s fabulous. The car hasn’t moved since we got here five ... read more

Tuesday 14th – today’s journey to Port Hedland would be about 400 kms so we were up and about quite early preparing and we left the caravan park at 9am. For the first hour or so of the journey we were still on the outskirts of Karijini NP, passing Dales Gorge on the way, so the scenery was lovely and the road undulating so the time passed quickly. Once passed the eastern entrance to the park we turned left to join the main road to Port Hedland. A couple of wide loads came towards us and we could see they were cabins, probably destined for either the caravan park or the mine. Then we met some road trains but, on this first part of our journey, luckily no big wagons came up behind us. After about ... read more

Hey guys! Sorry about the gap between the last blog and this one! It's been a while! I'm back in Australia now doing the final part of my outreach stage in a small town in Western Australia called Port Hedland. It's about 2 days drive north from Perth and is a mining town so those who do manual labour here are loaded...seriously loaded. I think they could earn in a month what some people earn in a year! If you ever want to earn money quickly getting a manual labour job in Port Hedland is the way to go! Quite a bit of travelling has been done since I last wrote a blog! After Flores we travelled to Lombok which is another Indonesian island. The way which we got to Lombok was pretty epic...2 days of ... read more

Hi all Thanks for all of the lovely comments. We're currently at Port Hedland and, after what seems a lifetime, we are back online. I have been making entries in a Word doc. over the past week or so please read on below. I've added a few snaps too. Cheers J & R Thursday 9th Sept. 2010 We decided it was just about time we departed Broome, after almost a month there. We had such a good time and have vowed to return one day. We met up with a couple we had met at Daley Waters, way back in early July. It was such a shame we were moving on but they will probably catch up with us in Karratha. We left this morning at 9.00am and headed for Eighty Mile Beach, approx 360km south ... read more
