DAY 195 I got out of bed at 5am for a pee, and as we had camped at De Grey camp area, (615) Camps 5 Western Australia page 341, we knew there were no toilets at all, so you have to be brave and “GO BUSH” when you need to go, last night we were rolling around laughing because we had just left the Taylor Wellington Caravan, to go to bed, Kirsty said she needed to go bush, and wandered off with the shovel. So, I got up out of the trailer and found the first available tree, which is one of the best things about being a bloke, although there are many other good things about being a bloke. I looked up in to the dark sky, in full stream, and saw the ¼ ... read more

We were both a bit worried about the journey today. It was the longest stretch we’d done before and although it was on a good road, we knew there was going to be very little on the 600km route from Broome to Port Headland. It was a long way, through barren red soil, and there would be no mobile signal either. In preparation, we filled up the water tank and diesel before setting off around 9.30am. Getting out of Broome proved difficult. You’d think that GSP would make it a synch but instead it got a bit confused and kept trying to direct us down roads that weren’t there. Eventually after driving around in circles and constantly being told to perform a U turn we gave up and started to drive into town until we finally ... read more

What a bloody awful place this is. Even if I went over to the coast, I probably still wouldn't like it. This is what I think to myself every time I pass through here. Anyhoo, yeah so I finally got out of Broome. The car hasnt blown up yet but I'm not ruling out the possibility. Oh well. Off again now. Enjoy the photos which I took to prove I'm not in Broome. I know, its just dirt but I promise you that you wont find ground like this in Broome.... read more

Had a slow start to the day as we were only going about 140 km’s so we left about 10.30am and headed off to Port Smith. From the turn off on the hwy there is 24 km’s of dirt, dusty and corrugated road some place crawling some doing 40 km’s/hr. Warwick made comment that at times it felt like he was skating while driving as the dust was so thick, sites cost $28.50 bit expensive but good entertainment. Now if you were a real keen fisherperson like our son in law Nathan than this is the place to be. Port Smith Caravan Park has a bird sanitary and that’s it. The camp sites had 2 blades of grass so Bailey not happy again. The people staying there say the fish are plentiful; some have come ... read more

Happy birthday to Warwick, after putting some extra fuel in about 26 lts he drove out of Port Smith then when we got on the hwy Marg drove for several hours. Another hot day (33 in shade at Van Park) so we decided to go to Pardoo station and have a powered sited for the air con usage. Got to the turn off and about 13kl’s of dry dusty road again, this was a very corrugated road and a lot of dust, it was worst that this morning as we crawled along in 1st gear. At the station homestead the gate was closed so Marg did the right thing and closed it after we went through. The office was closed and a station hand gave us a form to fill in and said just go ... read more

In the morning we took the dogs to Cable beach for another swim, not a many nudist to pass this time. We didn’t stay too long as the sun was hot and strong. Took a drive around town and down to the harbour. It is an easy place to get around not to big. In the late afternoon Warwick went to fill up as the whole of Broome had a blackout and he replaced the dirty grease on the tow ball. We sat and had farewell drinks with Pete and Barb. These afternoon happy hour seems to last for several hours. ... read more

We rocked up on the doorstep of our friends from Darwin, now living in South Hedland. We are very lucky to have a comfortable home to stay in for a week. And it has been great catching up with Deb and her family. From here we made a day trip out to Karratha, Point Sampson and Cossack, while we also visited the local sites, including the yacht club for dinner, Pretty Pool, and a tour of BHP Billiton. We also happened to be in town for the 'Staircase to the Moon' which occurs when the full moon is rising over the mud flats at low tide, so we grabbed some fish and chips from the nearby yacht club and ate them on the beach as the moon slowly rose on Saturday evening. Not a great photo, ... read more

Monday 03 September 2007 HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO KAREN, DAMO AND CHRISTOPHER!!! So we have left the Cove and it is our fourth week here at Harding River Caravan Park in Roebourne. Now it’s a little less up market than the Cove was but it’s more entertaining……either that or Bron has become very accustomed to life in a van park and is the new Esmay Watson/social worker/counselor of Harding River (who would have thought eh?) It’s been over a month since we submitted an entry with photo’s so a lot should have happened right? Well we have made the decision to move on in two weeks time to catch up with Britt and Greg and Ruby and Eddie, so we will meet them at Kalbarri. The plan is to go to Perth and either rent a unit ... read more

Rode 600 kilometres through not much other than scrubby grasslands (some on fire, of course), staying last night at a roadhouse (appropriately named “Sandfire”) that burned down several months ago, but was still operating out of a shipping crate. The campground was basic with only a few people there, but there were dozens of peacocks roaming around including some white (albino?) ones. Port Hedland, like Broom, is a rapidly growing town, not because of tourism; but because it has a humungous port handling iron ore shipped directly to Japan and China for smelting. The mines inland (up to 600 kilometres/400 miles away) have their own private railroad and the trains to the port are several kilometres (2-3 miles) long . . . The port loads on average two huge ore ships a day . . . ... read more
