After a week of travelling, crossing the Gibson desert, seeing camels, lots of great sunsets and sunrises, expensive petrol (2.80 and 3.20) aboriginal communities, sand storms and lots of interesting country in between we have arrived at Port Hedland. Camping along the way we have enjoyed many nights eating, drinking and watching the stars. The boys even managed an ice-cream cake for my birthdat last Thursday. Carrawine Gorge was lovely and a nice place to sit in water and wash the dust off. Peter here - having a great time & totally unstressed! The country has been tough, dry, barren & bloody empty. I'm putting up with Brickie & the VB's are holding out. Enjoyed following Len Beadell's markers & story I have previously read. He established alot of roads in the outback & was the ... read more

After our second week on the road and another 1200km later we are settling into life as nomads. The remainder of our time at Coral Bay was (of course) divine. We were very sad to leave as we felt so at home. But off to the bush we went and started our journey on The Warlu Way. This drive will take us from the Coral Coast into the dusty red Pilbra and then out again to the coast and up to Broome. Our first day out of Coral Bay found us camped at House Creek Bridge. We had left the coast after a lunchtime swim thinking that would be the kids wash for the day. But after a minute in the red dust, that thought was soon forgotten. Their skin has changed colour and they are ... read more

Day 173 - Broome to De Grey River It’s moving day! Or is it?! We’ve still got loads we could be doing here but we really should be going. Amber, Ross and Lucy walked across from the resort to say goodbye, that was so sweet of you guys, thank you very much and we really hope we’ll see you again when we get to Perth. Belinda very kindly offers Darryl a special cup of coffee with her special coffee maker so when she brings it round we pop it on the stove. It’s funny, as it’s boiling we don’t get the normal aroma of coffee? Weird? Not really, there was none in there and boiling water doesn’t tend to smell of anything much! It made us laugh but reminded us just how much we’ll miss these ... read more

2-10-09 We set off early & the scenery is pretty boring, flat & not many trees, you cant see the ocean , so I settled back & read a book. We got fuel at Sandfire Roadhouse & had a drink an ice cream. We got to Pardoo Roadhouse & topped up with fuel & had lunch & then pushed on to De Grey River free spot. We travelled 388 km’s today. It was a pretty windy trip & used a bit of fuel, never mind. When we arrived at De Grey, we stopped & walked the length of the camp area & right at the end there was a great spot on the river bank near the train bridge. We drove down the easy way, & set up, it is a lovely spot. At the moment ... read more

De Grey to Port Hedland, 27th August - 2 September Stopping at De Grey River for an early lunch Judy suggested a walk along the track. We found a beautiful spot overlooking the river so decided Port Hedland could wait a night and we went back for the rig and set up camp. By this time it was very windy and Rags wasn’t sure whether the “drag” had been because we were punching into the wind. We met some delightful people, Maria and Ernie and spent the evening playing “Sequence”. The next morning we’d decided to stay on at De Grey but Rags wanted to go into Port Hedland to purchase parts for the caravan wheels as he’d pulled one apart the previous afternoon and noticed a broken seal and also wanted new brake pads. Calamity ... read more

Karratha to Port Hedland via Roebourne 200km It was only a short ride today, but oh was it a return to those high school geography classes with Mr. Nitsky. We learnt all about the mining in the Pilbara region. In fact we seemed to have learnt the same thing each year, perhaps indicative of a big country with much not going on, or more about a new school and the Australian education system. Anyway Tom Price figures boldly in my memory (who could forget that name). And there was a sign for it a few k’s out of Karratha. Tom Price a mere 400 km to the right across a dirt road. Why go to it when it can come to you. A little farther along I was stopped at a train crossing. The train was ... read more

We leave Port Headland tomorrow, and probably won't have coverage again for a while. We are heading inland, south to Marble Bar - the hottest place in Australia for a night. From there we will check out the dirt road to Newman, some 299k, but will probably retrace our tracks to highway one, go west 60k, then turn off south again 450k to Newman (where the world's largest open cut mine is), and then Karijini National Park. We have booked a caravan park in Karratha, back on the coast from the 30th Aug for 5 days, where we are expecting some mail, including the re registration of the van. (We have been on the road now almost a year!) This is an update before we disappear into the outback "no signal land!!" - However, we could ... read more

Hi everyone We have travelled down an uninteresting road from Broome, but have made many lovely stops along the way, each one along a red dirt road to the coast. Unfortunately there has been no computer coverage until now. We arrived in Port Hedland today, and have lots of emails and news to attend to. I will probably send 2 lots of photos, as too many to put on one blog! After 11 days in Broome, we drove south to the turnoff to Barn Hill Station, then tackled our first (for the caravan) 10k of red dirt road. This is why we paid the extra and got an off road capable van, with the bigger wheels. Barn hill Station has a rustic camping ground alongside red cliffs, beside a lovely white sand beach. We had 2 ... read more

We stopped here after leaving Karratha on our way to Broome, it was just over 120kms North of Port Hedland. It was a station stop so it was only $45 for a week or $17.50 for a day so we thought we may as well do a week as we are in no hurry and the ranger at the gates kinda talked it up a little to us. But once we arrived it was a bit of a let down as there were limited sites that were on flat land, most were on a slight hill or full of rocks. But we finally found our spot and set up. Most (well actually all) of our neighbours were 60+ so no play mates for Ax and pretty quiet. we had a fire every night so we needed ... read more
