Tugs escort tanker
Port Headland iron ore carrier heads to sea. We leave Port Headland tomorrow, and probably won't have coverage again for a while. We are heading inland, south to Marble Bar - the hottest place in Australia for a night. From there we will check out the dirt road to Newman, some 299k, but will probably retrace our tracks to highway one, go west 60k, then turn off south again 450k to Newman (where the world's largest open cut mine is), and then Karijini National Park. We have booked a caravan park in Karratha, back on the coast from the 30th Aug for 5 days, where we are expecting some mail, including the re registration of the van. (We have been on the road now almost a year!)
This is an update before we disappear into the outback "no signal land!!" - However, we could be pleasantly surprised!!
Port Headland is a busy port, with iron ore loaded by conveyor belt into huge ore bulk carriers. It is one of the world's largest ports, with over 70 million tonnes of product worth more than $3billion shipped each year. We saw several ships arrive or leave with the help of tugs. We've also seen some long trains carrying iron ore,
Train beside salt pans
Iron ore train heads back to Newman , 112 cariages and 2 x 2 engines with 2 engines at the front, and 2 more in the middle, and over 100 carriages.
Thanks to those who have sent emails - we had over 40 to pick up when we arrived here! We love hearing news of home.
Cheers Lynne and Chris
