Continued along Gibb River Road to Bell Gorge. The rocks were very slippery in the water at Bell Gorge, if you took a step or two you just started sliding on your feet. Stayed at Windjana Gorge. Before we went to bed, we went to Tunnel Creek. We had to walk through some water and some people how had already been through it told us that they saw some freshwater crocs. It scared the horrors out of us. We had to have torches because it was as dark as midnight inside. Got up in the morning and went down to Windjana Gorge and saw 60+ crocs including a baby croc. It was only 20cm long. A bit further on was a croc with its open showing off its teeth. Ha, ha, very funny. I’m not going ... read more

Drove along Gibb River Road - wasn’t as bumpy as everyone had told us. Arrived at King Edward River Camp late. In the morning tried to catch some fish with a bucket. Had a swim, and then went kayaking down the river. Didn’t go past a spot where the rocks made it very shallow. Came back, had lunch and went down the river again as far as we could go. Next day packed up in the wind. Drove up to Mitchell Falls. Broke a shock on the camper on the way. Stayed there a night. Had to bush walk into Mitchell Falls, including climbing over 6ft high rocks. The Falls were nice. Had a swim above the falls, and then walked back. Drove back to Kalumburu Road and did another shock on the camper. Thought the ... read more

We left El Questro and went along Gibb River Road. We stopped for lunch at Ellenbrae Station where a goose chased me. He was big and white and pretty noisy. When we went inside, we ordered a scone with jam and cream and had a drink. The scone was really big and very, very, very, very yummy. Got to King Edward River campsite and spent a day relaxing. We got to go kayaking down the river. Drove to Mitchell Falls and set up camp, then walked to the falls. We went for a swim at the top of the falls before going back to camp. You are not allowed to swim at the bottom of the falls, because there are saltwater crocs. Freshwater crocodiles don’t hurt you unless you attack them or get between them and ... read more

Silent Grove (Wednesday 4th - Thursday 5th June) We were very keen to get to Bell Gorge in the King Leopold Ranges for a long awaited swim. We set up camp at Silent Grove situated about 10km from the falls. Our camp site was beautiful with a scenic rock wall behind us, table and fire place - Luxury! After set up was complete we donned our bathers, packed the backpack and drove to the gorge walk starting point. It was then about a 2km walk over rocky terrain to the falls. The walk was truly worth it with a spectacular water fall and lots of rocky swimming pools. We had a great afternoon swimming and following the rock pools upstream. The view was amazing as well as the wildlife with lots of water monitors, frogs and ... read more

Its hard to beleive its almost been a week since our last entry, time has flown but we're loving it. We left Port Hedland and said goodbye to Tom & Donna on Tuesday morning, missed a roadhouse for fuel on the way so missed out on a chance to go fishing on 80 mile beach or we would have had to walk the last 50km to Broome. Checked into the Cable beach Caravan Park which was great, had a fantastic pool which we spent a lot of time in, Spent 3 relaxing days in Broome, not a great deal to see but good atmosphere, heard about a Rave that was on Saturday and Alex Lloyd was playing at the main pub on the Friday but we had spent enough money already so decided to move on. ... read more

After our unexpected bog experience it was lovely to have a bit of a lie-in. In complete contrast to the mud-splattered states we were in the day before, we relaxed round the pool in the morning while Ian went to rescue the bus which had been stood in the mud overnight. We all cheered when he finally came back avec bus! Set off again in the afternoon after thanking the Parry Creek people for their help, stopping at the Five River Lookout at Wyndham. It was quite interesting to see where the rivers join (with help from the map) but wasn't the most inspiring view compared to the sights we've previously seen - a bit grey at the edges due to the silt at the edges. We had a long journey to our camp at Pentecost ... read more

After a 3 hour flight from darwin on the tinyest plane we arrived in broome. Hannah full of flu and me with some sort of weird rash on my arm looking like id been taken over by aliens! We were picked up by our new boss ned and taken to the offie to get a crate of beer...good start!!! Leopold Downs is the name of our new home its about 3.5 hours away from broome and the nearest town fitzroy crossing is about an hour away. I have since discovered fitzroy is tiny with a few grocery stores, petrol station, and ofcourse a pub...i am wondering why its even on the map! leopold is owned by aboriginals..the bunaba people and is set on 1.2 million acres of the kimberleys, there are about 10000 head of cattle ... read more

So off we set on our 4wd, 9 day tour through the Kimberley to reach Darwin. We had booked the trip in Perth a few days after arrival and Kimberley Adventure Tours had come recommended. Certainly the vehicle was fairly new, but this was to be expected as the gruelling terrain in the Kimberley makes wrecks of everything. Our driver, cook and guide were all bundled into one very capable and instantly likeable Queenslander named Joel. During the tourist season (April to November) he does the nine day tour to Darwin, has a few days to get everything cleaned up and prepared again and then takes a group in the opposite direction to Broome (less popular) while his fellow guide with another group is heading from Broome to Darwin. So it goes constantly over and back ... read more

Broome, Derby and backtracking a little on The Gibb River Rd. Our 4 days respite at The Frangipani apartments in Broome was a little subliminal. Even the road from Derby to Broome had a point of difference to start with - No corrigigaations and no red dust, --where were we going???? By now we had done some 9,000kms and 7,500 of them were on unsealed road, so reddish looking bumps etc had by then become the norm for us. On our way into Broome we stopped off at a roadside organic produce stand and topped up the F & V’s, yummy! Our Broome sojourn that we referred to in the last Blog was just what we needed to unravel the Bumps. The first night we visited the very long white sand cable Beach we enjoyed ... read more

Please note -the happy and friendly crew we met and got bogged in with at Manning Gorge, on The Gibb River Road, in The Gorge and then at dinner at the pub when we all hit Derby, after showers and shaves, such a great bunch of people, from all over the world, who made THE most of the 6 days the road was closed!!! The other great shot is of us crossing The King Edward river (with our skirt on the front, that is, the multi used tarp, to stop water going into the engine), which was kindly emailed to us by some lovely people we met on the other side of the river. Heather and her hubby were on a Kimberley Wilderness trip in a big bus and they took the shot of us to ... read more
