We called this next part of our journey as Survivor - Manning Gorge, with bloody good reason. When you read on you will understand why we called it this and that to frame the experience, you need to understand that one of our biggest worries with this trip was a breakdown of equipment or bad weather locking us in somewhere longer than anticipated. We spent quite a bit of time and Amanda’s money (Amanda will tell you that Bruce’s $17/hr at Telstra doesn’t count much) in preparing the vehicle to protect us from the former, with the prudent packing of extra food and water to manage the later. About the 20th of June, there is always a small smattering of rain in the Kimberley (no one tells you this until afterwards). On the 18th, Bruce suggested ... read more

From Drysdale we went to Barnett Gorge, just 30kms short of Barnett Roadhouse. Described to us in Ron Moon’s Kimberley Bible as a nice gorge and great swimming only 300m from the car park. Well, it was the worlds longest 300m; after what felt to be about 600m we came to the top of the gorge and then had another 1km to go before we could safely make our way into the gorge and go for a swim. Swim was good, but not really worth the walk, considering a nest of green ants that fell on Bruce and started stinging him, added to his later covering of small leech like creatures when he sat in one of the small water falls. After being a bit disappointed/seriously pissed off, we set up camp in the bush camping ... read more

What can we say but WOW!!! The trip to the camp ground was hard, with the roughest road/track/gap in the trees that either of us had ever seen, but it was certainly worth it. After turning off the Gibb River Road, we stayed at Drysdale Station overnight so we would be fresh for the 170 km assault. Filled up at $1.95 per litre for Diesel (yes that is not a typo) and frozen bread. The drive from Drysdale was 100km to the turnoff, then another 70km to the camp ground at the falls. Although there are several small creek and mud hole crossings, the first major river crossing was King Edward River. It was about 60cm deep, rocky bottom, but easy to get through. We were following a group of 3 cars full of toffs from ... read more

We headed off onto the Gibb River Road for the first time, to the ever popular, and pricy, El Questro Station and Wilderness Park. We visited Emma Gorge first which was a 2km walk over yet another river bed and very large boulders to a great clean water hole, with towering cliffs and rugged walls. There were rain drops coming from the cliffs above, but because they came through the rocks and cliffs first, they were quite warm and spectacular to watch. Bruce took a tumble coming into the water hole area and bruised his arm, shoulder and ego, but nothing serious. The water in the pool was freezing, as was the water fall, but after the reasonably tough walk we just had to go in. Without bathers, it was a fully dressed - or ... read more
