Still continuing along the Gibb River Road, there have been many other lovely places we’ve scrambled over rocks in the heat for hours, to see. The swimming pools have clear cool water fed by waterfalls that are all different - Manning, Adcock, Galvin and Barnett Gorges. At Ellenbrae we found a very unique homestead camp ground with heaps of character, but girls, you’d love the facilities! There is a roofed area for a BBQ and a donkey (for the city slickers, that’s to heat water for the shower) where you have to light the fire yourself. It has character plus, but the one toilet and one shower open straight off this area and both only have head high walls and a shadecloth curtain for privacy! Needless to say you have to time your visits carefully and ... read more

We’re back in civilization again! We’ve been without mobile phone or internet reception for two weeks while we’ve been driving along the Gibb River Road, a 650 km stretch of dirt between Derby and the Great Northern Highway near Wyndam. They say it’s the last real adventure left in Australia so we’ve got lots to tell you. It’s been great to catch up with all your emails and birthday wishes - thank you. My birthday was a bit different this year. It started off with us trying to sleep sitting up in the front of the ute which we definitely have no intention of making a tradition. We didn’t leave enough time the day before to reach our next campsite before dark. It’s too dangerous to drive with so many cattle and roos on the road ... read more

BROOME / DARWIN und Gibb River Road through The Kimberleys Den Nagel ausm Hinterrad entfernt, endllich..., ab aufn highway Richtung Derby.

Our last day on the Gibb boo hoo. We had two walks ahead of us today but first time to chill out at Zebedee Springs. A Glorious naturally occurring hot water spring consisting of several pools linked by cascading waterfalls all at 32 degrees heat! Reluctantly I was dragged out and hopped back on the bus to get to Amalie Gorge and then Emma Gorge. Each about a 3km walks with a beautiful pool at the end to jump in and cool off. At Emma there was even a small hot water spring coming through the rocks where you could just about squeeze into a pool it was collecting in. That was our last Gibb river experience; we then headed to the Zebra rock shop. Zebra rock is a type of rock that only occurs in ... read more

Today we were on a mission to get to El Questro in time to hop on the boat cruise down Chamberlain Gorge. We packed up and shot off to make it just in time to get ourselves booked on. What a relief as I didn't fancy a huge walk in the heat today and a leisurely boat cruise seemed to be a wonderful option! Plus, we got plenty of glasses of bubbly and fresh fruit on the return leg of the journey so erm sweaty walk or boat ride with alcohol? Tough choice really! It was a really good trip and the guide was really informative, did you know that 83% of crocodile attacks happen to Germans? They also told us about the Archer fish....they spit at the months etc just at the water surface which ... read more

Back on the bumpy dirt road down to the Gibb River Road again. We stopped to look at more Aboriginal paintings of Wandjini and some Bradshaw paintings also. We stopped at Miners Pool for lunch, "snaggers" (sausages) and had a quick dip in the water. Then it was to Drysdale Station again, this time to stay for the night. We got 3 more passengers here because their bus had broken down. Wendy and Andy were just typically British and then there was Dani, a really nice German girl. While at the campsite the station dogs decided to bring us 2 presents. I saw them coming from the distance and it looked like they had a large piece of bark in their mouths. But, as they got closer to me I could see that this bark actually ... read more

Day 3 was spent mainly on the long bumpy road up to Mitchell Falls. Rory's daughter burnt her hand quite badly on the hot coals in the fire place, the girls tended to like prodding and poking around the fire, as you do! It meant though, that we needed to go to Drysdale Station to get the first aider to look at it and, if need be, fly her to a hospital. She was ok, just got some special burn cream, but while she was being sorted Rory shouted us all a burger and they were goooooood!!! It was then back on the bumpy road with our tummies full to get to Mitchell Falls. Once there we were officially in one of the remotest parts of Australia, cool hey?! We nestled down in our swags again ... read more

I survived the night! No nasty encounters and sleeping under the beautiful stars is something else. The Milky Way was right above our heads. We drove through the King Leopold Range today and stopped off at Bell gorge for a walk and a swim in the waterfall. Then we headed towards Galvins Gorge, where we saw two big water monitors basking in the sun. At the waterfall and pool there was a swing rope hung from a tree which everyone was doing their best Tarzan impressions on! It took meanwhile to shimmy myself along the tree branch to the rope but I did it in the end! Trying to describe to you the beauty of the places we visit would just not do them any justice. We are in huge gorges with crystal clear waters so ... read more

We woke early in anticipation of our adventure this morning, and was out waiting for the bus at 6.15, as we had been told, for the bus to pick us up.....By 7 it had still not come and then the doubt hit us that maybe it had been cancelled! noooooooo! Fortunately it hadn't, and it never intended on picking up at 6.30, we had been told the wrong time, phew! The first port of call today was the Boab Prison Tree. Boab trees are everywhere in northern WA, they are super cool trees with big fat bottoms, that’s the best way to describe them! There is a story told that the Boab tress were the biggest trees around and grew much taller than the other trees and mocked the smaller ones. So for punishment they were ... read more

Continued through to Manning Gorge, got there on dark and didn’t see the signs to say “Coach Parking Only” and we parked in that section. Oh well, we weren’t the only ones. Two other cars that broke down on way to Mitchell Falls arrived after us. Went to do the walk to Manning Gorge and the Falls. The path was overgrown and the only other way was to swim across to the other side and then walk. 8am was too early for a swim and only 18°C. Skipped it and drove to King Leopold Conservation Park. Went into Bell Gorge (and saw another Ulty). It was a 3km round trip. Nice walk, but rocky. You walk into the gorge, cross the river at the top of the falls, climb the rocks on the other side and ... read more
