G'day..... Well, we never actually thought we would make it to Australia. Back in November it seemed so far away and now this is the last leg of our trip. With the hard parts of Asia behind us we re-enter civilisation. We are understood, we can cook for ourselves in kitchens not situated in an alleyway and not inhabited by other animals (although there are more than a few dubious "younger" backpackers here). Even though eating out is fun, after 3 meals a day for 6 months that first bowl of home-made bacon amatriciana was almost as good as at home - almost! I am sure the novelty will wear off but its great at the moment. What has taken a little longer to wear off is the cynicism and mistrust we picked up in Asia, ... read more

Gosh we had a great nights sleep last night all of us- thought we wouldnt to be honest- I always get cold in tents but was lovely and warm! I was so out of breath walking up the mount!!! I was all wrapped up warm but wet through from the rain so was constantly taking clothes off and popping them back on again!!!! Never getting it right! We headed back as it was getting dark...................... as the title sugests todays the day for moving, although i've been planning it for over a month it seems to have crept up all quick like, which is why i'm awake at 8:00am with a stinking hangover and some strange girl snoring in my bed...... the part about it being 8.00 am is sadly the only true part. so last night i went out with my boss from work and the other two, tilly and kim for some beers which was a bit wierd for as much as me and mark get on where always to busy to talk so we have this friendly relationship without a base, so after maybe two beers and he's pissed he's asking me my life story he's also praising me infront of people which is awkward to say the ... read more

Tonight we had tickets to see the musician Beth Orton at the St.Kilda Palais. I'd remembered in conversations with Caroline about the type of music that we enjoyed and she said Beth Orton was one of her favourite artists. I later realised in local music magazines that she was playing a one off concert in Melbourne and as she is a UK artist this one of both fortune and lucky coincidence so I managed to get a couple of tickets for us. We weren't dissapointed either. Having never heard her music before I was pleasantly surprised. Admittidely not my usual stuff I listen to but a collection of live band fold/female guitar music which was actually really rather good. We had a few drinks and a meal before hand and settled in to be enteratained for ... read more

So armed with a monster hangover- although I was incapable to get drunk last night even with downing copius varieties of different drinks, I was in work! Didnt mind though as was looking forward to our little camping trip away!!! Rushed to the Vic Market first to purchase some Uggs and a cozy wooly hat to keep both tootsies and head toasty warm!!!! Darren's Auntie and Uncle had let us borrow their car and camping equipment for the weekend...................... The car was packed up like we were going away for 2 months!!!!! It was a 3-4 hrs drive (which is nothing in Oz) we were all tired or hungover so it was a long drive and was still having birthday wishes phone calls from home...... had a lovely long chat to all of my nieces- so ... read more

Arrival was fast and easy. Took the shuttle into town. Found my hotel ok but reservation didn't work out so I found a map and wandered downtown to tourist info and booked a REALLY great place, a historical hotel right in the heart of all the action. Sigh...it's great! So far I've wandered around town lots. Took the free circle tram around town a couple of times. Strolled down the many (really cool!) alley ways and arcades the city if famous for and stopped along the way for an espresso or two (which they are also famous for). Yesterday I joined a tour to Philip Island. This was fun! First we went to a sanctuary where I got to tickle a wombat (their feet are ticklish!), pet a wallaby, feed a kangaroo, and (no moleste but) ... read more

Two months ago, I changed my occupation. After countless years of student status, I've been promoted to research student. As a coursework student last year, I clocked my hours alongside my companionable classmates in the computer lab. We were a chatty mob who gradually acquired a haggard appearance from excessive multi-tasking-- attempting ludicrous feats such as Multiple Regression, Statistical Computing, and Job Hunting simultaneously. Much to my delight, the world of a research student has broader horizons with many more travel destinations. I still frequent my old haunt-- the building engraved School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine-- at Sydney University, and can be spotted ferrying up and down the staircase between my desk and the staff cappuccino maker at all hours of day. It's never long, however, before I have to tuck out the back ... read more
