Hello everyone!!! Well firstly apologies in how long its taken me to get round to writing this thing. But in all fairness I haven't been up to a great deal so I thought I would just write about my time in Melbourne when I'm about to leave! And I leave in under two weeks now, which is very scary as I've been here for three months! Have really loved it here and I feel like I live here! So without further ado here's a little run down of what I've been up to since february and through march! Fruit Picking in Echuca Last time I wrote I informed you all that Sarah and I and some other people (Ashley and Helen) were heading off to go fruit picking. Well that was a bit of a mini ... read more

After a four hour flight we landed down under...hello Melbourne Australia. Three and a half months in New Zealand have now officially come to an end, I'm sure gonna miss that place, if you ever have the chance go to NZ, you won't regret it. We caught our 6am flight to Melbourne and stumbled into our hostel at around 10am after the time change. Feeling slightly deranged with only two hours of sleep, we set off to check out the town, and what a nice town Melbourne turned out to be. A mix of Victorian and modern architecture are the setting for this bustling city of four million people. I had forgotten what it was like to walk around midtown Manhattan, but it quickly came back to me after passing endless people wearing black suits. It ... read more

There always seems to be surf somewhere on the Victorian coastline. Shark attacks are rare so you're pretty much safe - except that you normally have to contend with some monstrous waves coming in off the Southern Ocean. The recent Ripcurl-Pro surf contest at Bells Beach was blessed with chunky surf with 3 metre faces of water. That's all very well for Kelly Slater et al. but we are much happier at the sheltered spots favoured by mere mortals! We have spent many a happy day riding down the face of waves, being dumped and thrown around and even occasionally fearing for our lives (well, it's half the fun of it). For the uninitiated, Sex Wax (produced by the strangely named Mr Zog) is wax that you put on your surfboard in order to give you ... read more

The flight over from Hong Kong to Melbourne was dull, but fortunately the taxi driver who took me from the airport into the city itself had a bleached mullet to liven things up. I was a little alarmed by the preponderance of strip joints along King Street, which was part of my hostel's address, but it's on the fringes of the Central Business District so that made perfect sense. The hostel itself, which I'd chosen purely because both my guidebooks had rated it very highly, was bright and open, with the walls near reception awash with leaflets for tours and activities. I briefly looked into the kitchen, which contained enormous glass-doored fridges like you'd find in a supermarket frozen food section, and a large central collection of hobs. Of the few people lounging around in the ... read more

G'day all you Sheilas and Bruce's! Its been a month since my last blog and as i have a memory similar to that of a goldfish with alzheimer's i am having to consult my diary just to remember what ive been doing, so this could be a messy blog! The last month has seen me watching the Commonwealth games closing ceremony, watching the Melbourne Formula 1 Grand Prix and unfortunately finishing my travels in Melbourne (sob sob!) and now i find myself back in rural Australia picking fruit again. So heres the story so far: At the end of the games i had the pleasure of watching the closing ceremony down on the Yarra River in Melbourne (where i watched the opening ceremony aswell). I got a good seat right by a big screen where there ... read more

Hi everyone, Thought it was time for an update as it has been a while since my last entry, and so much has happened since the last blog. As of December 8, I moved into an apartment with three friends I had recently been bunking up with since my arrival in St. Kilda. By this time we were all very tired of hostel life, and all felt it was time for a change. So we decided to get out and get a place together. I will spare you the details of the first apartment we moved into for two weeks. It was brutal. Very minimal indeed. Definitely not fit for any human. As a result of my complaining and crying, I was given a new nickname. “The Prince.” Apparently nothing was good enough for me. And ... read more

When I explained to Matt Mulcahy that I was going to travel around Australia, the first question he asked was, ‘where are you starting?’ When I casually replied, ‘Bundalaguah,’ he shrugged his shoulders, took a sip of his beer and said, ‘where else’. Bundalaguah is a small farming community in East Gippsland between Maffra and Sale. It consists of a dozen or more farms, a school, a cricket ground and plenty of beer-stocked fridges. The Simpson family first came to know of the place in the late 70s when Ian and his terry towling hat ventured up the Princess Highway with a Richmond CC team to play a practice clash against the locals. Dad was lucky enough to stay with Neil and Marion Wrigglesworth upon whose property the cricket club stands and, as people do when ... read more

My third time to Great Ocean Road, but only the first time since one of the 'apostles' crumbled and fell and now left with 11. I'd recommended anyone doing this trip from Melbourne, to take at least two days as there is much to see and do on the road leading up to the 12 Apostles. We stopped at a couple of places, had breakfast on the way up to Apollo Bay, then stopped at the craft market there. We took a walk in the rainforest at Mait's Rest, then to the Tree Top Walk at the Otway Ranges. Admission is $17 for adults, for a 2km walk which takes about 45 minutes to an hour. You get to walk on a elevated man-made ramp that goes up to 25 metres from the ground, then walk ... read more

After travelling through hundreds and hundreds of kilometres of fields (I had no idea there were that many sheep in Australia!), we were definitely ready to see some ocean scenery. Although we saw bits and pieces of the ocean while we stayed in Robe and Port Fairy, the Great Ocean Road didn't actually start until we passed Port Fairy. The road still didn't hug the coast, but there were many turnoffs to the various geological formations. Along the entire road we were rained on (it followed us!), but we were able to find a few breaks to explore. All along the road, the coastline is constantly being battered by the southern winds and waves. As time and the forces of water take their toll, the coastline is continually degraded leaving hundreds of isolated rock formations standing ... read more

Dad loves tennis so we decided a tour of the home of the Australian Open would be interesting. We got to check out the press conference room - much smaller and more intimidating than I first thought! Interesting to check out the change rooms and find out that lesser-ranked players get smaller lockers! The day we went, a crew was setting up for a concert that night so we weren't allowed access to the arena - anyone thinking of going should check this before they go. We were still allowed to sit in one of the corporate booths and watch them set up. Good tour for anyone interested in a behind-the-scenes look, but I definitely recommend going for the Australian Open, the atmosphere is amazing!... read more
