Part 22 April 30 Picton One of the tricks to having your trip work out well is to ignore things like weather and alarmist advice. Our plans to bike the Queen Charlotte Track were delayed by not being able to get bikes for the kids. One guide told us he would be being "irresponsible" to rent his kids bikes for this endeavor as the track was so difficult. When I tried to pin him down about the dangers, the most specifics I got were that it was "boggy" in spots, "greasy" in others. Some others also told us the track deteriorates quickly when wet, and the 5+ inches of rain in the last week certainly hadn't improved conditions. So we delayed our start one day while we found someone else with kids bikes and decided to ... read more

Arriving in Melbourne late in the night gave me a fresh perspective of this intriguing and cultured city. Even though I was stepping out of a ten dollar airport shuttle with a dirty backpack and a paper sack filled with the rest of my stuff, I felt as if I was stepping out of a limo into a vast romantic city, like that of Paris. It was a very special feeling though because I was reuniting with Rachel after our longest break so far, two weeks! Rachel and I decide to explore Melbourne like we would if it was our only destination in the world. We put our worries about money to the side and put on our walking shoes. We had a great time riding the tram everywhere and investigating this unfamiliar urban city. ... read more

This is how it starts, a camper and a beach. Next a beard and unwashed hair. Soon, tie-dye, dreds and Jesus sandals. Our little camper has it all and a bag of potato chips! After stocking up the fridge with fruit and veg (we will be eating healthily for the next 8 days) we made directly for Palm Beach - where Home and Away is made. Just 20 km out of Sydney, this is by far the most beautiful beach around and even has Summer Bay Surf Club. A great place to spend our first night free camping; that just means sleeping by the side of the road like pikies, or Orrs - how long did you lot live in a caravan for? We rose extremely early in the morning for the first leg of the ... read more

Arrived in Melbourne on Thursday, and we've really enjoyed it. The weather apart, everything has been great. In the last couple of days we accidently ended up in the crowd outside the Aussie Television awards... getting a glimpse of Lleyton Hewitt and loads of people we didn't recognise, but they were making the Aussies there scream, so they were probably famous... And had a "Neighbours" day yesterday, visiting Ramsey Street in the morning, and going to a "Neighbours" party with some of the stars in the evening. It was a little odd for me, seeing as I don't watch neighbours, but Josh wanted to go and it was a fun evening, met some cool people and get to brag to those at home who do watch neighbours!! The highlight of Melbourne so far though has to ... read more

We have settled into our new home very nicely, and have begun to get into some kind of routine when getting up in the morning or as it has recently been mid-day. As we are both on the job hunt for bar-work there are no bars open in the morning, in fact most of the bars we are attracted to work in open as late as 5pm and then stay open until 3/4/5am, so getting up early is of no benefit to us. To help me on my quest for new work I purchased a deck of playing cards on which have all the coolest/secrect bars in Melbourne (the hotspots) most of which are down little alleyways or small streets, therefore not too easy to find. On the back of each card, for each bar, there ... read more

I managed to distinguish myself when checking out by attempting to get into one of the other dorms which I had mistaken for the storage room, much to the amusement of the other guests at reception who could clearly see the door marked "Storage" a few yards to my right. Calypso gave us a lift to their campervan depot in an eastern suburb of Melbourne, where we finalised the paperwork and had our first look at what would be our home for the next week. It's a Toyota Hiace, with a high top and over 300,000km on the clock. There's just about enough room to stand upright inside though you probably wouldn't want to be pogoing. The kitchen section comprises a couple of gas rings, a sink with a tap providing a dribble of cold water, ... read more

Yesterday was Neighbours day for us, its all filmed just near Melbourne, so seemed like one of those things which we just had to do. The day started off by getting the bus tour down the Erinsborough High, the studio, and Ramsay Street itself (acutally called Pin Oak Drive). The tour itself was horribly cheesy - as to be expected, and we were forced to watch one of the worst dvd's ever on the bus journey, but it was all in good spirit. One of the funny things was, everybody else on the tour was British (the tour guide said he doesn't think he's ever had an Australian on it!). The school and studio were pretty boring (as we weren't actually allowed inside any of it) but the Ramsay Street was very interesting. Its much much ... read more
