Good Day Mates When my colleague Steve picked me up at Melbourne Airport and drove me to my hotel I asked him what he likes so much about Melbourne and what the biggest differences are with Sydney. After all I was a bit sceptical and ignorant. I visited Melbourne in 2008 with my Sydney friend Jason. We spent the majority of our time than at Laver Arena as we had tickets for the Australian Open. We did manage to see a bit of the city. But I did not remember much of that. So I had come back to Melbourne now to give it another chance. But after an already perfect stay in Sydney I was sceptical about Melbourne. Steve told me that Melbourne has more beautiful architecture, more food and shopping opportunities than Sydney making ... read more

Monday we explored the scenes of Melbourne via tour bus including the view from Eureka Skydeck 88 stories above the downtown streets and the Shrine of Remembrance, created after WW I to honor those who served and since updated to honor all fallen military personnel. Finally, we had a wonderful tour of the Aboriginal and Melbourne history sections of the Melbourne Museum plus a tour of the Royal Exhibitions Building across the street, still a marvelously constructed building still used, after more than 100 years, to hold exhibits and festivals. The following afternoon, at sea, we got a special behind the scenes tour of the ship, seeing where the crew works hard to give us The Regent Experience. Everywhere we went from the chain locker (anchor chain storage), through the liquor and wine storage lockers, through ... read more

I played tour guide to mom and dad today and took them into the CBD (central business district) of Melbourne. We caught a tram right out front from our hotel into town and got off at Federation square. We had a little walk around there which is a big square and attached to it are some neat architectural museums. It's also right on the banks of the river so we had a little wander down there. From the bridge over the river you can see down to the big MCG stadium (Melbourne Cricket Grounds) They play cricket there but also play some AFL. We hopped on the free city circle tram that took us over to Waterfront city. It's a new area that has been built up and is still building in a harbour. They have ... read more

I woke up today quite excited as i knew later tonight my mum, younger brother and I went off to Melbourne for a few days. Of course, i was going to miss my boyfriend, as in our 5 years of being together this would be the longest apart. I still had to pack, but had to wash all my clothes and get ready. 3pm came, and i thought i should probably have a shower and straighten my hair, as i hadnt packed yet and i had to leave at 6pm! But i thought i'd have enough time, so daudled a little more. Will came home at 4pm and was like you need to pack!! (I am quite suprised i didnt pack sooner to be honest!!) 5pm came, and i thought, omg i have 1 hour to ... read more

So, it was the third day in which God created land and water, separated them, then filled them with all sorts of plant life and "fruit-bearing" trees etc. I've certainly seen much evidence of this in a relatively short period of time! Yesterday, I took a tour out to the south east coastline called, "The Great Ocean Road". So much of this drive was breathtaking with its dramatic scenes of waves crashing against the cliffs, turquoise waters gleaming against an array of multi-coloured monoliths and we also had several opportunities during the drive to see animals in the wild. At one point we spotted two kangaroos eating some plants in the distance, koalas in the wild, snoring blissfully in tall treetops and even a kukaburro bird sitting pensively in a tree, totally ignoring our squeals of ... read more

According to the Book of Genesis, God created all of the creatures of the Earth on the sixth day. For the past 51 1/2 years I have assumed it included your standard lions and tigers and bears (Oh my!)...but yesterday's encounters with many of the indigenous creatures of this vast country reminded me that there had to be room on the ark for many others. And a strange group indeed!!! Yesterday I had the opportunity to leave Melbourne and go on a tour of two conservation areas, a typical pioneer Australian homestead and to get a sampling of the magnificent coastline that encircles this vast country. I was NOT disappointed!!! Being an animal lover myself, it was a treat to see many of the indigenous creatures of Australia, up close and personal and to learn about ... read more

Well...so begins the next chapter of this amazing journey. Australia first, then Vietnam and Cambodia, followed by Thailand, China and a grand finale in Japan. During what appeared to be the longest flight on record for me (16 hours) in the largest plane (it had a second floor!) I have finally arrived in Melbourne, Australia. It was a bit of an inauspicious start...one hour into the flight, the gentleman next to me suddenly fell out of his seat onto the floor and passed out. I signalled a flight attendant who rushed over and all sorts of pandemonium ensued with oxygen tanks, tapping on his chest and people leaning out of their seats to see what was going on. The man on my right, was sound asleep and didn't even budge for a second. I was secretly ... read more

Day 132-134 15th-17th January We finally arrived in Melbourne after that dreadful train journey. We hadn’t booked anywhere to stay but I’d had a quick look on the internet and knew there were several hostels very close to the station. So while Ellory waited with our bags in the station I went off to find somewhere for us to stay. Unfortunately both of us had failed to realise that the Australian Tennis Open was due to start in the next few days and everywhere was full! I’d been to the 3 hostels I knew about and no one had any space…. So I came back to the station and used one of their internet terminals to find somewhere for us to stay. Flinders Station Backpackers, I booked our room online and we decided to walk over ... read more
