Well as its my last full day in Melbourne I figured I should write a blog for my time in Melbourne. I flew here from Sydney with Jetstar. An affiliate of Qantas. The flight was delayed but only by 15 mins and there were turbulents for the whole flight. I arrived at Melbourne Tullamarine airport at 5pm and got to the hostel, The Nunnery, by Carlton Park at around 6pm. The hostel is in a converted convent and retains many of its original features. The tram runs directly in front of the hostel and as I said there is the park opposite and the Melbourne museum and IMAX. The weather down here is a lot cooler 20-25 degrees with a breeze. Different to the 35-40 degrees further north. I had my first potato of the whole ... read more

Well the time has come for us to leave Melbourne. We have been here for approximately 4 months and I have really come to like Melbourne. Apart from the spasmodic weather Melbourne is a great city to live in. Unfortunately as a backpacker it is not so easy. If I lived here permanently with a grown up job and didn't have to save most of my spare money on travelling I would LOVE it. There are so many bars, restaurants, festivals, live music and events. Christmas was interesting in Melbourne. Given that we didn’t know that many people and the ones we do know were not likely to invite us to their families for a big roast turkey dinner (they have BBQ, how screwed up is that? you can't put BBQ in sandwiches for weeks afterwards). ... read more

This is it; the final blog for Matt and Narelle’s Grand Tour 2012. All good things have to come to an end and our tour finished just after 5pm on Monday 17thDecember as our taxi dropped us off outside our Melbourne apartment. It seems amazing to think that we have flown well in excess of 50,000km, and driven some 15,000km since we left Auckland Airport in March. We have lived and experienced the most amazing of adventures and we have gone a long way towards throwing off bowlines, sailing away from safe harbours and catching those important trade winds. Mark Twain said to “Explore, Dream, and Discover” and I feel we can look back with confidence that we have achieved his ideal. Do we feel lucky? Of course we do. Will we do it all again? ... read more

You may need to prepare yourself for this one. Seriously, sit down, feet up, (I would say tea, but it's not even worth it, it'll either be spat all over the floor or cold by the time you finish reading. So, forget the tea). Are you ready? I said the last chapter in my life is where things started to spiral out of control, well, things continued to spiral to a point where I feel that backpacking got the better of me, and I've been doing things that are far from anything I'd be doing at home. But, in a good way, I guess. Crazy things can happen if you're open to take life's opportunities. You see things get worse, and then they get better, depending on which way you look at it. Back in Melbourne, ... read more

It feels a lifetime ago since we sat at Waiheke planning our ‘Grand Tour’ and decided that to cross Australia we would complete the famous Ghan trip from Darwin to Adelaide. Despite our best efforts it did not work out so we took the shorter option – the Overland train trip from Adelaide to Melbourne. This is an 11 hour, 828km journey through the most spectacular of scenery and, after completing the journey, we could not recommend it enough. Our train was made up of six passenger carriages, a large locomotive, a luggage car, and a car transporter; it was approximately 190 metres in length and travelled at an average speed of 85km/hour with its Emu emblem front and centre. You check-in as you would at an airport but then the romantic notion of train travel ... read more

Following in the oar marks of Captain Sturt who rowed the Murray River in 1830, we spent five very pleasant days on the water and amongst the wildlife of one of the world’s great waterways. The Murray may have been known to man for well over 30,000 years but during the last century houseboats, paddle steamers and ferries have become more prevalent and plied their trade up and down the river; many of them originating from our point of departure; Mannum. Much of the landscape is unique to South Australia and looking back on our trip we experienced an environment that is steeped in beauty and a wonderfully relaxing holiday on our boat “Unforgettable 2” – a great name for a hire boat but sadly I was still humming Nat King Cole and Natalee Cole’s duet ... read more

A month and a half ago I set out on a journey of a lifetime. A spur of the moment, jump in the deep end sort of journey, totally unplanned with really not much thought going into it. Originally I had my place confirmed at Southampton University to study English Literature and History, something I felt I was doing for the sake of doing it. My summer 2012 was the most enjoyable of my life, having traveled to Greece with school friends, Spain to the Pamplona Bull festival (and no, I did not run and will never run), then Italy with the family, followed by a flight back to Greece for a bit of Island hopping, alone, and finally Berlin, just to travel some more. All this traveling was very unplanned which is what made it ... read more

We are moving out of the hostel, yippee! Only for a couple of weeks though unfortunately. A room in an apartment is available until the end of November so we are having a hostel break. Let me begin with the description, I will start with the word Penthouse and follow it with the words pool, jacuzzi, sauna and gym. Yes we are moving up in the world, not bad for a couple of skint backpackers. I do not have much to report on Melbourne itself really, I spend most of my time working so have not really had much chance to explore it. I work along the riverside which is fulll of expensive restaurants and bars, they have these massive towers that blow huge flames out of the top which is pretty cool or hot depending ... read more

Hello and welcome to my first blog entry, I am currently residing in a backpacking hostel in Southbank, Melbourne. Me and James have been here approximately 1 week and as usual have spent most of our time looking for work (damn you expensive Australia). Anyhoo, we have both found jobs, yippee! I am working in a coffee, cake & gelati (ice cream to the English) kiosk in a casino complex and James is working in an Irish bar. The hours are long but the money is good, well in compared to England anyway, I am getting paid double what I was in the UK for a much less taxing job. James' job pays a lot better than mine but he doesn't get as many hours. They are training him in all things bartendery, he lied on ... read more
