So this blog covers a bunch of random things Shelagh and I have been up to since our Darwin Blog. We plan to do a fair bit of diving while we are here so we signed up to do our Advanced Course. The course was held in Manly. It didn’t get off to a great start. We were told to arrive at 8 am. Some others were told 8:30. It was 10 am before we did anything other than fill out a form. 10:30 before we left the shop…to go to another location to get our gear. Around 11 when we reached the beach to start the course. Not so impressed. We had to do 5 dives. The first 3 were on day one just in shallow water at Little Manly. We did a dive to ... read more

10 days in Melbourne (2nd September - 12th September 2013) Jetstar did its normal trick in making things a little more difficult for us, this time cancelling our flight so that we had to leave 3 hours later. By the time arrived in Melbourne it was after 6pm and dark, but we had an easy trip into the city via our pre booked Skybus. China Town was close by so we had an enjoyable meal that included fried wantons. Day 1: Breakfast was at the Victoria Markets we enjoying a Turkish egg and bacon wrap, plus a mug of coffee. We then wandered around the markets and the meat displays tempted us to buy two thick fillets of steak as well as some nibbles. As we have an apartment we will be able to cook our ... read more

5 and a half months have passed since I touched down in Australia. There's been ups, downs, and full circles. I've had a job I enjoy, a house, a great circle of friends and a brilliant social life all centred in Melbourne. I LOVE Melbourne. Such a great city that I truly felt part of; so when the time came for me to leave I felt like I was leaving a part of myself. On 18th June 2013 I flew out of Melbourne and onto Adelaide, the first stop of a big Australia tour. This is why I'm here - to see this amazing country. The time was right to leave Melbourne, and the life I'd created, and go out and explore. This blog is the story of my final weeks in Melbourne, the great friends ... read more

11/2 We got up early and walked to Flinders Street for the Neighbours tour we had booked for this morning. We bought a snack and drink from a little shop and found our way to Bunyip's office and waited for the tour. We all left on a little Neighbours bus with our crazy Irish guide called Gerry, giving us a lot of facts and figures about the beauty that is Neighbours! Neither of us had watched it for years, so we didn't know a lot of what he was talking about, but there were the old classic characters we knew! We got to the set and saw the backs of the buildings- Erinsborough high and the mechanic's garage. Then we were ready to meet our special Neighbours star, who turned out to be none other than ... read more

Today I ventured into Melbourne city for the first time. It was freezing, I know I have been used to temperatures of 25+but 17degrees was really cold!!!! Arrived at Flinders St Station architecturally quite a nice building so far so good. Across the road to the information centre for a map, then found out that they had an exhibition on of film costumes in the ACMI, thought I would have a peep at this as the weather wasn't too good, cold and a few showers. Well the costumes were on loan from the V&A in London. Audrey Hepburns dress from Breakfast at Tiffanys, Marilynn Monroe dress, the famous one where it billows up, costumes that were made for some of the Elizabeth the first films from various ages, Spider-Man, cat woman, one of john Wayne's cowboy ... read more

Here is my extensive list of everything you need to know about visiting Australia (Melbourne & Sydney): Now with pictures! Of course there's a lot more to Australia than just these two cities, but they are popular and I spent considerable time in both so they are the ones I'm most versed in. Disclaimer: I was in Australia in 2011, so some of this information may be out-of-date (restaurants closed, museum prices raised, etc.) To Do in Melbourne: - Queen Victoria Market. Lots to see, fresh produce, clothes, hats, etc. Look for the sales, negotiate for better prices. Only open certain days of the week. Get a burger (it is huge, cheap, and has egg, cheese, etc., so delicious, I think the vendor is down the cheese aisle). Get a beer (Holgate Brewhouse Temptress Chocolate Porter) ... read more

Well....... I have arrived in Melbourne safe and sound it’s just taken me over a month to actually get round to writing this (oops)!! Just like Dubai, Melbourne didn’t actually seem to get off to the best start either! We didn’t arrive here until about 2 in the morning and couldn’t see any other option to get to the hostel other than jump in a taxi so within half an hour of being in the country we managed to spend $100! (That’s about £70 to us Poms!) We’d purposely gone back to the same hostel we stayed in last time as we had such a fantastic time there, so we went to bed that night with very high hopes of meeting a great bunch of people the next day and pretty much recreating our experience from ... read more

Today was a bit of an odd one; we'd somehow ended up with a day spare but we knew we had to get some things done prior to our flight to Fiji tomorrow (washing, blog updates etc). After sorting the washing out (and hoping it wouldn't get stolen off our washing line at the caravan park) we hopped on the train into Melbourne. We spent 2 hours updating the blog in the State Library - it's about the only place you can use a computer without spending a small fortune! After some advice from the tourist info volunteers we decided to pop down to the docklands and take a look at the art trail. While some were quite fun (the giant bunny), the rest confirmed that we do not understand modern art at all! Back at ... read more

I think the fact this is my first blog entry since I arrived in Australia shows just how busy I've been. Finding the time to stop and write has been difficult, but I wanted to now to record my experiences of the last few weeks before I forget it all. The most logical place to start this blog is directly following the last one - my time in Sydney. I had 9 days in Sydney in total and I made sure I saw all the best bits. The weather was glorious and the G&Ts flowing. I was sharing a room in a hostel with 3 other girls that journeyed over as part of the Working Holiday group I was in. The hostel was pretty good, had a big kitchen, cinema, TV lounge, decent bathrooms and a ... read more
