February has been and gone and we are now one day shy of being away 4 months! Luckily for us February was the month that our two good friends arrived in Melbourne after a 3 week stint in Asia. A fairly quiet start to the month did see our Colombian chum, French friend and Italian (I have no word for friend beginning with I in my limited vocabulary) pal all leave 200 Spencer Street. They have been replaced by 2 English girls who are studying here for their 3rd year and another Italian. The flat is a much better place to live now with people who can speak our language and are just generally nice people! We also managed to secure a place for Kerry and Novo, which is staggering distance from our gaff. We've spent ... read more

Having spoken to Mark and Jenni yesterday, we rose early to talk to Neil before he went to bed. We still can't get our heads around speaking to the family who are in the evening of the previous day. We decided to start the day's sightseeing with a visit to the Victoria National Gallery only to find that it is closed on a Tuesday, so we will have to do that one later in the week. Instead we caught the City Circle tram and went to Docklands for a walk around Melbourne Marina. The area looked really good in the sunshine with new flats and expensive boats moored nearby. After a spot of lunch we went on to the City Library to join a walking tour. This tour took us around the historic buildings including the ... read more

Sorry for the delay folks, hopefully you haven't been starved for too long of our literary genius. So to pick up where we left off in our November blog - we found an apartment. Hostel life sucked, worked out cheaper to get a flat share so we did just that. Our place is right in the heart of the City and comes with a gym and pool which is just excellent. We initially moved in with a Sri Lankan, French and Colombian - this has now changed to a Colombian, different French guy and an Italian. The one thing in common they all have is that they don't have great English and as such, Scottish accents are beyond them. Football is always a common ground so I can always just chuck out the odd footballer from ... read more

As is often the case between two major cities, there's been ongoing rivalry between Sydney about which city is the best place to live. At the release of every international survey: the best city to live in; the friendliest city to visit; the world's best restaurants; which are Australia's most popular tourist destinations .... whatever the topic may be, either Sydney or Melbourne leaps to proudly proclaim its superiority if it was the best represented, or bemoan the biases and injustices of the verdict if not. I confess that Melbourne wasn't a city that I immediately warmed to. I fell for Sydney's flashy charms almost immediately, however when I first visited Melbourne in 2001, it didn't have the same instant hook. Call me shallow, but Sydney's in your face beauty had me at "harbour". Melbourne's been ... read more

Woke up this morning and got breakfast with Debbie. This would be the only time I drove with someone else in my rental car. So I drove very carefully and it was handy having someone else in the car to watch your driving. We ate breakfast at a diner in Portland and we both had Eggs Hollandaise which I always enjoy. Still was not used to the price of the meal which was $50 or so. I was happy to buy Debbie breakfast for letting me crash at her place. After a photo at the Portland sign and after a final hug I reluctantly said goodbye to Debbie and was on my way back to Melbourne. Driving back to Melbourne I took the road through the interior so it only took 4 hours to get to ... read more

This will be a long blog starting at 12AM on April 18 and not ending until 11PM of the same day. The blog starts with me going to Canberra greyhound bus station. I thought Canberra seemed like a boring city but on my way to the bus station the streets were filled with college age kids running around and partying in the streets. A lot of people were shouting at me on my way to the bus station. Taking a bus in Cambodia can be dangerous and taking a bus in Canada and USA is not comfortable. I was not looking forward to the Australian bus but it was comfortable and it had charging ports at each seat which helped a lot. I was able to sleep through most of the ride so I woke up ... read more

Today we returned to the US from our vacation in Australia. It is sad that the adventure is concluding as there are lots of other things to see in Australia, but we are ready to come home. We had a shuttle transfer arranged at 7:45 to get us to the airport for our flight, so we got up about 6:00 to get cleaned up and packed in plenty of time. However in his zeal to get everything into the suitcases with a weight distribution which would satisfy the airlines, David kept packing things which were still needed. So there were several rounds of unpacking and repacking, only to be done all over again when something else was needed (by that time he couldn’t remember which bag had what things inside). At last we were ready and ... read more

Today we start the final phase (last several days) of our vacation. We are in Melbourne Australia and we have several more excursions planned, thanks to the tremendous help of Kelly Hoban, Travel Consultant from Qantas Vacations in California. Back in early February, Kelly was instrumental in finding and scheduling tours that addressed everything we wanted to see in the Melbourne area. THANK YOU very much. url=https://host3.squeaksoft.com:2096/cpsess6575052632/3rdparty/squirrelmail/src/compose.php?send_to=khoban%40qantasvacations.comkhoban@qantasvacations.com The day began with a 7:10 pickup from the lobby, so David had go... read more

Walking tour of Melbourne I have one day to be a tourist in Melbourne. Up to this point, for the entire last week, I’ve been in workshops, meetings, and in just plain work. But today is Saturday and tomorrow I leave to head back to Brisbane, my temporary home here in Australia. To commemorate this day, I decide to dress in a flowy dress that is a bit too summery for this chilly overcast day and I determine not to take an umbrella with me. I prefer Romantic visions of my thinly-clad self skedaddling from a downpour to take refuge under a Victorian awning or in an art gallery or in a bustling café rather than lugging around an umbrella all day and banging into things. We’ll see if I pay for my foolishness. I’m on ... read more

So I have just started a course in tourism, and one of my first assignments was designing a 1 day itinerary of a popular tourist city in Australia. The city I chose was Melbourne because it is my home city, and I felt this assessment was a great excuse to research the main tourist attractions on my very front doorstep. After I had finished the project, I was surprised to realise how diverse and interesting of a city Melbourne actually is, and how much I take living so close to this beautiful place for granted. Also, after reading back over my itinerary, I felt that I would actually like to follow it one day (I will be sure to share my experience with you here when I do). So here is it... I present to you ... read more
