So I have just started a course in tourism, and one of my first assignments was designing a 1 day itinerary of a popular tourist city in Australia. The city I chose was Melbourne because it is my home city, and I felt this assessment was a great excuse to research the main tourist attractions on my very front doorstep. After I had finished the project, I was surprised to realise how diverse and interesting of a city Melbourne actually is, and how much I take living so close to this beautiful place for granted. Also, after reading back over my itinerary, I felt that I would actually like to follow it one day (I will be sure to share my experience with you here when I do).
So here is it... I present to you my 1 Day Itinerary of Melbourne's Main Attractions!!!
9:30am- Arrange to check in luggage at hotel (select something to suit your from a range of places to stay on Southbank for a centralised location) then take a short walk North to cross the footbridge over the Yarra River and walk East along Flinders Walk.
10am - Walk up the stairs to street level at the St Kilda Road bridge and catch the Route 35 City Circle Free Tourist Tram from outside the station. Ride the tram to Victoria Parade, where you get off to go to the Queen Victoria Market. Spend a couple of hours at the market and grab some coffee and a snack at one of the many eateries within the market.
12pm - After a couple of hours at the market, take the Route 35 City Circle Tram via Docklands Drive and Harbour Esplanade back to Flinders Street Station. Cross the road to Federation Square. Head straight to the Melbourne Visitor's Centre (clearly signed) and pick up a map. From the Visitor's Centre, walk around Federation Square to take in the unique architecture before entering the ACMI museum.
1:30pm - Once finished at ACMI, grab lunch from one of the many cafes in Federation Square before moving onto the National Gallery of Victoria. Spend a couple of hours here.
3:30pm - From NGV take a leisurely stroll back down Southbank along the Yarra River, and head back to your hotel. Check in to the hotel and take a couple of hours to rest and get ready to experience Melbourne's nightlife.
6:30pm - Before taking your pick of the many restaurants within walking distance of the hotel, take a short walk over to the Eureka Tower to view the sunset from the viewing platform on the Skydeck.
9:30pm - After dinner, walk or catch a taxi to the Crown Entertainment Complex. Within the complex, you can go to one of the many bars, nightclubs or pubs, play arcade games at Galactic Circus, go bowling at Kingpin Bowling, or of course hit the gambling tables! You could literally spend all night in the complex, but when you are ready to go back to the hotel, you can walk or easily catch a taxi from the front of the complex.
