Tuesday 4th January Well hopefully I can keep this installment of the blog short and sweet after the rather long Sydney episode! We have travelled for two days from Sydney to Melbourne. We had a over night stop in Canberra where we did nothing apart from being overcharged by a Pakistani Taxi driver who drove us the long way around to our hostel. We only knew this when we got our taxi back in the morning which took half the time and four streets less. So we arrive Melbourne after an all day monster bus journey and then walked about a mile to our hostel which wasn't ideal at 11pm but we fired on. Our accommodation The Vic Halls is in the CBD of Melbourne city. We feared the worse as we approached the entrance to ... read more

We have arranged our trip to allow us a few days in Melbourne on the way home. Eric grew up in Melbourne and I grew up immersed in my father's Melbourne references and stories, and we are very fond of Melbourne. This will be our 5th visit since we met in 1998. I vastly prefer Melbourne in the winter but for various reasons we keep ending up there in the summer - this will be our 4th summer trip. Our last two visits coincided with a ghastly heatwave . On all previous visits we have been graciously accommodated by a friend in Williamstown but this time we are staying in the CBD at the Greenhouse Backpackers. We have so many "favourites" in Melbourne that is very difficult for us to spen... read more

Melbourne is a little bit of an enigma to me – in a pleasant way of course! I say that because walking down the streets here feels like being in Chicago downtown with a little bit of Europe thrown in. There are so many things that strike me – for a big city it is amazingly clean and organised; people are so friendly, helpful and it’s like a cosmopolitan of the East. The one thing that really raised our eyebrow is that due to the strength of the Aussie Dollar, things are so expensive. Looking at prices, you can’t help but convert them into British pounds and think “damn that’s steep for a cup of coffee!” Nonetheless, I feel as though I get more for my money; a mushroom pizza we had at a small pizza ... read more

Hi all, So I had my second day of work yesterday! Its good fun, everyone is so nice and the day goes so quick cause there is so much to do. I spent the day tying off balloons, my hands are killing me defo going to need a manicure ha! Love how manicures are so cheap over here, along with massages. And everyone gets them, at home it is definitely a treat for you to get your nails done, here its the norm. Weather was beautiful yesterday, sun shining everyone was in a great mood. It's so much easier working with people when they are in good form. Melbourne is definitely an easy place to work, I'm sure you get hard jobs here, but it just seems so much more laid back there is no mad ... read more

Melbourne 19TH August 2010 We visited Melbourne on Monday 16th until wed 18th of August 2010. After getting 4tram’s, a bus, a plane, 2 trains and a taxi, all in one day I think we can officially call ourselves TRAVELLERS again, and it feels good!! I’ve missed this life style. Unfortunately I have to say goodbye to my gold bag that I “borrowed” from Olivia in Perth, the strap is too unstable, but it has carried an unbelievable amount of stuff, its like a marry poppin’s bag and its small enough to carry onto the plane, but yes it is slowing deteriorating, I have to let it go and possibly by something with wheels!!! So Melbourne is somewhere I decided I wanted to go when me and ste heard we have to leave Australia within a ... read more

Hello boys and girls The girl half of the okten/green combo is here again to update you on our latest adventures. I'll try not to bore you but this may be a long one as it has been a while, here's what's been happening from our time in Australia; Well we left Singapore and arrived in Sydney in February where Pat and Tash kindly picked us up, put us up and fed us! We stayed with them for four nights in Wollongong, it was great to catch up with them as we had parted ways in Thailand with us going to the islands and them going back to Laos. We had a couple of nights out with their friends who I felt really sorry for as all the four of us talked about non stop was ... read more

I just arrived in Melbourne, after a wonderful week with friends in Newcastle. I stayed with Monica and Scott, and it was just great to spend time with them. Monica had taken the whole week off work, and Scott, who is self-employed at the moment, took time, too. On Sunday night, we had a barbecue and sat around a fire that Monica had lit. Camo, Adriaan, Donny, and Tinks came over. So good to see them! Monday was a pretty active day. In the morning, I went to gym with Monica, afterwards we had lunch with Tinks. In the afternoon, Monica, Scott and I tried out the new bike path that runs from Belmont North (where Mon and Scott live) to downtown Newcastle. In the evening, we were invited to Camo’s place for dinner. And we ... read more

Melbourne Getaway - spent a few days in melbourne until the taxi drivers got the better of me. I got abused by one driver who shook his head and suggested I should have walked instead. I asked another driver to take me to fitzroy gardens, and he didnt know where it was. When I mentioned captains cook cottage he had no idea what i was talking about (its about 800m from the CBD). we asked him to use his satnav, but he refused. just hopeless. I began carrying a map with me to point out the the destinations and the possible routes we should take. Southbank was a lovely escape, visited a few gardens, the titanic exhibition and associated imax movie/doco. Went to skydeck88 and out on the 'Edge'. this is a glass cube that protrudes ... read more

Hello I hope you are all well. We have only just realised that we have not finished off the travel blog for NZ since arriving in Aus. I am now writing this at our friend’s house while Sam is at work. We are still homeless in the long term but are moving into a central flat share for a month this weekend. Sam is loving his new job and is allowed to keep his beard. I have temp work starting next week that I think will be extra clothes shopping cash as we can’t wait to look like non travelling humans again! (Impossible I hear you all say) But back to the point at hand. Our last week in New Zealand was always going to be risky. We headed north from Auckland which is traditionally summer ... read more
