Just back from a weekend in Melbourne and I can confirm that they do have trams, tree lined streets and a dirty great cricket ground. Wasn't sure what to make of it at first: it is a lot different to Sydney (as people never tire of telling you) and the wide boulevards do make it feel a little more European, but it's all a bit more complicated than that. I guess it's true that it's a more stylish place (I fitted in wonderfully, obviously) and the food was good, but there's something above and beyond all that that slowly creeps up on you and makes you realise that you love the place. Walking along the Yarra is as good in it's way as ambling around Sydney Harbour. St Kilda is much better than anything Sydney's got ... read more

It's nearing the end of October, and February 2 seems like a long way away when I look at the (mostly empty) pages in my diary, but consulting my 'to do' list it seems like I barely have any time at all until I leave Melbourne, destination: Amman, Jordan and beyond. There are passport photos to get, visas to apply for, currency to exchange (not to mention currency to be saved!!) and that mystical and confusing language of Arabic to grapple with. No, I'm not expecting to be fluent by Feb, nor am I even expecting to be able to construct meaningful sentences entirely on my own. Basically, I need to cram a whole lot of useful phrases into my head, have a good go at at least being able to recognize numbers and begin the ... read more

Hi everyone, Hows everyone doing??? (Thats an offer for you all to comment and let me know...) Life is much the same in Melbourne. I am now the second longest resident in the hostel - can't decide if that's a good or bad thing, but it's still a lot of fun. There is a continual debate in my head over the pluses and minuses of finding a house and it comes down to this: If i move out I will have a much quieter life and meet much less people, BUT I would have my own room and proper cooking facilities. Hmmm, somehow that made it all sound so simple. Anyway, below is a picture of my bed (the lower one). As you can see mum, I am still an incredibley messy person. Organised disaster, yup, ... read more

Hey all! So we haven’t written for a while, partly because we have been busy sorting out somewhere to live partly because we have been having too much fun and partly because we have been lazy! Since we last wrote we swapped high rise luxury living for a backpackers hostel.. Bit of a culture shock there! We booked 2 beds in a dorm room for 7 nights, giving ourselves that long to find somewhere to live. The hostel was actually a nice place to stay, only 5 beds in our dorm and the hostel was always lively with organised trips and tours and had pretty good facilities for cooking and stuff. I am not going to bore you all with what we did everyday but some highlights include, getting lost trying to find a bar and ... read more

Doesn't time fly Wow! I've been in Australia for a year! (to the day on 1st september.) That is mental! There is no point of trying to retrospectivly blog my year. On one hand too much has happened and on teh other i have essentially just been working, not travelling so its not really the same (which is why the few and far between updates on here finally fizzled out totally.) Here is a brief, annecdoteless summary! Have had an amazing time. 5 Months in Sydney, mostly working in HOME (huge nightclub) and loving it. Made some seriously awsome mates, backpackers and locals. Lived on Bondii beach for 6 weeks in middle of summer and spent final 2 months over xmas living in cool flat in CBD (Darlinghurst) and had incredible time. In seeing Mum and ... read more

11th June 2009 After finally arriving in Melbourne and a good nights sleep, we set out to explore Melbourne in just two days. First up we went to get a birdseye view of the city on top of the Rialto Towers. Just like Auckland we took lots of photos of the cityscape and Alex got excited as he got a glimpse of the Albert Park F1 race track. It was then on to Melbourne Gaol, the infamous site of the hanging of Ned Kelly. We managed to spend a good 3 hours morbidly reading the accounts of terrible crimes, mistaken executions and general injustice (there was a 3 year old boy held in prison for being idle!!!!). We were then under arrest and taken to the city watch house and placed in a cell. Luckily for ... read more

Hi Everyone! For those of you who have been on tenterhooks awaiting the next thrilling instalment of 'Pork', I can only whole heartedly apologise. There are many excuses though for this monstrous oversight. Actually, oversight is the wrong word really. Pretty much the reason is the in the title. Since getting the job here I've been doing the full time work, including last Sunday as well, which are fairly big system shocks after 8 months with no routine, except for forcing myself up early for the latest plane, train or auto mobile. Over the past 5 weeks I've spent most of my free time unsurprisingly with people from the hostel, here's a few of the long termers: James (Australian), Bert (Belgium), Ricky (English), Kevin (Irish), Johan (Sweden), Dan (Sweden), Jess (Sweden), Christoph (France), Nikki (Holland), Marye ... read more

Hi Folks, After the phonecall on monday I went on a mission to buy a second set of work clothes and managed to move into 6 bed room in hope of sleeping well for a change. Didn't work, barely spelt so pottered off to work on tuesday feeling semi-dead! Found my way into the office, saw Rick at his desk and introduced myself to the accountant Khang. Was shown around the office by Richard (working now so he's Richard, not Rick). It's a small office I guess, the accountants room at one end, the CEO's at the other with a few good sized booths split into pair for potentially 6 people. The company is the Institue of Arbitrators and Mediators Australia and I work at the national head office. We run courses to train people to ... read more
