After yet another hearty breakfast, Karen and Mitch leave for home. They had been able to sneak an extra day off work after the Christmas break but they now needed to get back. Mitch in particular was due to start a new job the following week and had a months worth of work to fit into the final week of his old job and I suspect he is feeling like I will be feeling when I go back later this month. In the meantime I feel grateful for the continuing holiday and try not to give work any more thought.... read more

After Karen emigrated to Australia with Mitch, her two sisters and Mum and Dad followed them. No wonder she is so settled here, none of that emotional pull of family ties although Mitch has his family back in the UK. Apparently Karen's sister Steph regularly visits Noosaville, she loves it and has recommended a place for breakfast so we make our way down for more food! At this rate, I won't be able to move and suggest that we hire bikes to explore further. Karen confesses that she hasn't been on a bike in 16 years but is game to get back on that saddle. We collect our bikes and helmets ... read more

Martin and I are fly to the Sunshine Coast on our own leaving Melissa in Sydney for the next week. We have arranged to meet an old school friend - Karen and her husband Mitch. Now I have know Karen since we were just 12 when our fathers were in the RAF. We went to the same school when the squadrons that my Dad, Karen's Dad, Lofty's Dad, Teresa's Dad and probably others that I can not remember was shutting down and they were being relocated. All of our Dad's got posted to the same new RAF base which meant that although we moved schools, we moved with friends. This was very important at that age and I can still remember the sense of inclusion I felt when I was able to walk to my new ... read more

Day 18 We got up after being woken up by noisy children in the apartment above and had a lazy brekkie looking out at the sea! At about 9 we walked down into the town to catch the river ferry that is like a tour bus, we sailed down to the marina and had a look in all the shops, one of which was called chocol'arte which had chocolates in like a coffee shop which also sold local people's crafts and art, I had a 'woodworm' which was macadamia nuts in chocolate to look like a worm and hubby had a mint chocolate budha aaannnd the boy bought his croc hat! Yay! We then did the hop off bit along the river and had lunch hubs had a big brekkie and I had a really very ... read more

So we are 3 weeks into our trip! It has gone so fast but at the same time I feel like I have been out here for ages - perhaps because we have done so much already. So far I have had a near death experience and broken 2 pairs of sunglasses. I have only had one case of sunburn though - hurrah! Our first stop was Melbourne - my first impression was that it was bloody freezing! I was not impressed this was not what I was expecting from Australia! On the other hand I really liked the city. It had a really nice feel to it and the food was amazing!!!! We went to a couple of markets while we were there and got to try lots of yummy things! On our first day ... read more

Great Barrier Reef

After Hervey Bay, I spent one day in Noosa. I'm past the great barrier reef now, so it's white sand beaches and big waves (and of course lots of surfing). Noosa is a really laid back town. Everyone there seems to be content just being a surf bum, living a simple life and not having any stress out ambitions. My hostel was in a great location - right on the beach, so I went for a few good body surfs. I was going to try surf lessons, but they are apparently the most expensive in Noosa and it was a weekend, so the beach was pretty crowded. I'll try in Surfers Paradise (where I'm going tomorrow). Brisbane is the opposite of Noosa. People here are wearing suits, lots of office buildings, people walk like they have ... read more

We had our week at home organising our lives, and have been spending time back at Tewantin and Noosa enjoying all that the area has to offer. We were watching the TV weather girl at the Gympie Muster this morning. It's actually the Gympie Music Muster, held in the Amamoor State Forest. We drove into the forest one year to see what the area was like but we've never been when the Muster is on, mostly because it's crowded! Anyway, we got interested and decided to drive into the area at least to 'get the vibe'. It's very pretty countryside along the Mary River Valley. We drove on and on along the narrow bitumen road, and as we drove further towards the forest, more and more traffic built up behind us or took the usual risks ... read more

We had a good look at Kingaroy this morning. We went up a hill to a lookout for a look over the area but unfortunately the trees had grown and they hid the view. Kingaroy is dominated by the very big silo complex in the middle of town – full of peanuts. We drove up and down Kingaroy streets, interesting to see the council prune of trees on the main street, a trunk and about 10 centremetres of each branch left standing. We came to a little roadside stall selling peanut paste (what Queenslanders call peanut butter) and all manner of flavoured peanuts. We weren’t adventurous – we bought a bag of salted and I bought myself a little bag of butterscotch and caramel flavoured - very delicious. We headed north and east – Wandai where ... read more

9/3 We checked out and got the bus to Noosa which got us there for 1 o'clock. Kennedy had to stay in a different hostel for our first night in Noosa so once we'd both checked in we met up again at the beach. We spent the afternoon at the beach and then had a look around the town which I really liked. Out of all the places I've been to on the East Coast so far Noosa is definitely the only place I've thought I would like to live. My hostel provided free pizza for dinner which made me very happy! 10/3 Kennedy moved over to my hostel this morning and then we did the coastal walk from Noosa beach to Sunshine beach. It took just over two hours and it was such a pretty ... read more

Had a wonderful day at Australia Zoo. Had a cuddle with a koala and petted smore kangaroos. This is an amazing place - the best zoo I have ever been to. Since leaving Sydney we have been to the Blue !ountains and then to Byron Bay. Byron was a lovely place but we felt so old. After Byron we spent a couple days in Brisbane - preferred Briabane to Sydney. We are now on our way to Noosa for a couple of days rest.... read more
