Fraser Island has long been known as one of Australia’s biggest highlights. I went there with friends who are new in Australia though I have been here for a while. So when we finally made it to Hervey Bay, the jump-off point for Fraser Island, we were SUPER excited! Fraser Island is 120km long and 15km wide and is also known as the largest sand island in the world. It's around 3.5 hrs drive from Brisbane as per visit Brisbane . There are no sealed roads and given it’s a sand island all the roads basically consist of loose sand. It’s like driving on the beach inside a rainforest, how cool is that?! Even with a small 4X4 (which we were initially considering), it would be very hard not to get stuck in some of the ... read more

Fraser Island Friday 6th May 2016 Today we got up prepared to leave the Island. As I have mentioned in earlier posts the tide times are important. High tide was 7.15 am and low tide was at 1.16 pm. This meant we should leave at about 10 am. Paul wanted to leave earlier but we knew it would be hard to leave too early. We compromised and agreed we would leave at 9 am. In the end he convinced us to leave at 8 am. He was proven wrong very quickly. We had only gone 7 kms and hit our first beach. The tide was too high and the cars were running too hard to just move a very short distance. We decided to wait the tide out at Indian Head and went for a walk ... read more

Fraser Island Wednesday 4th Today started normally with Cohen and I getting up at 6 am to have breakfast. Yes you read right, we get up at 6 am every morning. I know we are on holidays but we can't help ourselves. Once the sun is up we are up. Today we are going to spend the day at the rocks at Waddy Point. We were delayed a little as we had a flash thunderstorm. It started pouring at 10 am or so and it was over in 30 mins. We were on the road or bush track by 11.30 am and we headed to the Indian Head beach and started looking for pippies. Man these pippies are harder to find than dingoes. We were supposed to look for small round heaps in the sand as ... read more

Fraser Island Thursday 5th April 2016 Today was going to be a quiet day camping on the beach for most of the time. Anyhow that's what I thought. We decided at the last moment that we wanted to continue to the cape of Fraser Island. Now this is the domain of experienced four wheel drivers as there are two big obstacles to pass. The first one is a sandy by pass track that goes inland into a sand dune for about 500 metres after you go through a small rock based water puddle. Anyhow we were not the first there. There was a Ford Ranger stuck in the ruts. It reminded me of my sister Tracey. I think she would have loved this (not). Tracey is still scared from getting stuck in sand at Cape York ... read more

Fraser Island Monday 2nd May 2016 Today Paul, Cohen and I got up early, before the sun did, and got ready to go and do some serious fishing (I am joking off course) We had jigs, bait and anything else you needed. We had to walk as our cars had so many awnings and ropes attached to them that we could not move them. Also we did not want to wake the girls out of their beds. Now that would have been a bad idea. The walk was about one and a half kilometres. Easy walk first thing in the morning. On the way we found the first sign that there were dingoes on the island. There were dog tracks leading to the tent camping area (not our area as we have a protective fence around ... read more

Fraser Island Sunday 1st May 2016 In rained again last night. This seems to be a daily occurrence up here. Seems to rain more at night than during the day but we do see pockets of rain during the daylight periods as well. Today we woke up and after Breakfast Paul decided we would walk to the shop. Well that is simple. NOT. We started off by going out of our camp and heading to the beach. We went the wrong way first and then had to double back about 500 metres. We then walked along the beach. We walked, walked and walked some more. Paul kept saying, its here I can see it over and over. On the way we found a thousand small cane toad frogs. I am talking the size of a fingernail. ... read more

Fraser Island Friday 29th April 2016 Today we woke up to rain. It was not cold, probably about 22/23 degrees. Today is the last full day at Dundaburra. Nothing planned today. Paul, Steve and I took the kids by walk to the beach after having set up our fishing rods. Taking them to this beach is like putting your life in the hand of nature and humans. Nature wants to get you through a rising tide and humans are trying to run you over with their big cars. I think I put in my expensive lure ( one that my brother in law Xavier had helped me buy. I nearly needed to mortgage my car to buy it Hahaha) into the ocean about four times and then both Paul and I gave up. No fish. We ... read more

Fraser Island Saturday 30th April Today we leave Dundaburra and head up further north to the Waddy Point camp ground. Only about 20 km up the road, oh sorry, beach road. It rained a lot last night to the point that Steve's tent leaked more than it should. Jasmine was swimming inside the tent. We have now given Steve our Oz tent which we were using for storage of our stuff and it doesn't leak. Tonight his family will sleep in our tent and hopefully they will stay dry. It seems to rain every night. We obviously sleep in our Troopy pop Top. The trip to Waddy point was uneventful. We had to do some beach driving, thank god it was not in the dark ( I think I will be scarred for life after yesterday). ... read more

Woke up at 6 am and went for a walk to the Wungul Sandblow which was a 2 km round trip with Cohen. It was incredible. We walked through a kilometre of bush and then all of a sudden we see this expanse of sand. Unbelievable. And what is worst I didn't have my camera. We will go back in the next few days with the others. After breakfast Paul set up his fishing rod and we went to the beach to fish. Paul went into the surf and had to keep an eye on the cars going past. It was quite dangerous with the kids playing on a sandbank in the middle of the sand with cars driving around us. It was like we were playing on the median strip. We didn't stay there long and ... read more

Fraser Island Thursday 28th April 2016 Hi all, well today was going to be a lazy day. No planning at all. Well that idea lasted for about five minutes. In no time at all we agreed we would spend the day at Eli creek Even though we went yesterday. The first low tide was at 7.30 am and high tide was at 12 noon. We decided to leave our camp at 9 am and headed to Eli creek. I think Paul was hoping to find his thongs. He had no hope at all. When we got to Eli Paul went looking for the thongs he lost yesterday. No hope. I told him so. After the kids had been frolicking in the water for an hour we spotted a person walking along the edge of the creek ... read more
