Woke up at 6 am and went for a walk to the Wungul Sandblow which was a 2 km round trip with Cohen. It was incredible. We walked through a kilometre of bush and then all of a sudden we see this expanse of sand. Unbelievable. And what is worst I didn't have my camera. We will go back in the next few days with the others. After breakfast Paul set up his fishing rod and we went to the beach to fish. Paul went into the surf and had to keep an eye on the cars going past. It was quite dangerous with the kids playing on a sandbank in the middle of the sand with cars driving around us. It was like we were playing on the median strip. We didn't stay there long and went down about 100 metres to a small creek and the kids had a ball playing in the creek.Everything we do by car is linked to the tides. The second low tide today is at 4.30pm so we decided we would have lunch in the camp and then head out at about 1 pm.We headed onto the beach highway and joined the other traffic. Given
The Maheno
The Maheno shipwreck we were a little early ( you are supposed to drive two hours either side of low tide) the were not a lot of 4x4 cars.First stop was the Maheno wreck. This was a trans Tasman passenger lines in the early 1900s which also served as a hospital ship. It ran aground in a cyclone in July 1935 and has been there since. It was used as a target for a little while in world war 11. Second stop was Eli creek. Just to see what all of the fuss was about as there are always heaps of cars around the creek. Well it was worth it. This creek is a crystal clear fresh water creek about three to four metres wide and about half a metre deep. The government had built a boardwalk from the base of the stream to a point about 200 metres upstream. You walk to the top of the stream, jump or step down into the clear freezing water and then either walk or float down with the stream. There are no Rapids just a lot of water flowing down. The kids had rings to float on. Could not get them out. They kept going
Eli Creek boardwalk
This is the boardwalk used to get to the higher point of the creek. At the other end there are steps to go down into the creek. up and down over and over. After we prised the kids, and Paul away from Eli Creek we went further South to a little township called Happy Valley. Just one general store with a small bistro restaurant . We booked dinner for Friday. This will mean some night driving on the beach, another first. No hot bread or cakes at Happy Valley. Headed back to camp. Still no fishing but I saw a couple of people throwing burly into the ocean with pantyhose or similar. On the front of my bull bar I have a shovel. This is just in case I need to big myself out of a rut. The shovel, when we left home, had a nice shiny end. It is now rusting away. I hope the rest of the car survives the rest of the time here. Hahaha. See the photo of the shovel. Tomorrow still at Dundeburra. The biggest thing that happened today is Paul lost his thongs. They were "Vans" thongs. He had placed them on the front of his bullbar and when we left Eli Creek has forgot them there. He hit a big bump as he was crossing the creek and we reckon this
is where he lost his thongs. Let me say he was devastated when he realised he had lost them at dinner time. He even wanted to go back to Eli creek at high tide to find them. He had no hope in hell. he was cranky all night.
