I've just returned a few hours ago from a sailing trip on the Whitsunday Islands and I'm speechless. I thought after the diving I was going to be hard pushed to do anything as enjoyable but I was wrong. Imagine being on a tall ship, based on 100 year old designs, with full sail capabilities, a fantastic crew of 6, 20 other passengers (when the ship normally carries 34), a talented chef, perfect weather, azure seas, white sands and a luxury private room onboard. Have you got it? So I was originally booked onto a ship called Solway Lass but when I changed my itinerary around I couldn't keep that ship on the alternate date so I transferred onto the sister ship called Whitsunday Magic. It's the newest addition to the fleet, only launched as a ... read more

hey guys.... I've finally settled down here, in the nice little town of airlie beach. I've just found a place to live here, with a local aussie, after storing my bags at the prosail office the last week and rotating through dorm rooms while on shore. Being temporarily homeless can be funny, if you can laugh at yourself.... I do it daily. Anyways, I've just got my job here confirmed, after a 3 day training trip. My boss, Dave a good lad, has thrown me on to HAMMER, maxi-yacht, sailing machine, a bloody weapon on the water. It takes 19 passangers and 4 crew, all of which I'll be cooking for and playing beach volleyball with, when not helping the skipper sail the boat. Last trip the crew was awesome, the skipper, Dan was only 24 ... read more

I have just returned from a 3 day 2 night sailing trip around the Whitsundays! It is a hard life I am leading at the moment. The trip involved sunbathing on deck, snorkelling, lying on a beach, swimming in the sea and oh more sunbathing! Fantastic! Whithaven beach was amazing. Very clear, bright aqua sea with golden sand. A great place to try out my new bikini which is a must have fashion item around here and justifies the rather hefty price tag. I didn't feel sea sick at all and loved sleeping out on deck under the stars listening to the sound of the ocean. Now heading down towards Hervey Bay and am booked on a 3 day 2 night tour of Fraser Island. I am now travelling with Yvonne from Germany (who I met ... read more

Firstly, I'd better offer some sort of apology for the lateness of this diary entry. It's been just over a week since my last entry, 9 days if I'm honest, and too long. Sadly for you guys it does mean this one's a bit longer than the previous entries... Moving seamlessly from the last entry which was the end of my diving course, I had a pretty relaxing day on the Saturday (12th), relaxing by the pool and wandering along the seafront of Cairns. I also booked into some activities the first of which was the following day - for those who don't know, Cairns is in the tropical north of Queensland, Australia and is surrounded by an area of rainforest. The Sunday day trip was into the Atherton Tablelands, an area of around 100km x ... read more

Fraser Island Next stop on the magical mystery tour of the coast was Hervey Bay a rather unspectacular place with nothing much of a beach just a strip of hostels, hotels and shops, but its used a jumping ground to get to Frasrer Island and so the crowds come flocking in. After a bit of a late start due to my refusal to get a bus at some ridiculous hour in the morning after drinking and diving into the early hours of the night before, I arrived too late to book myself onto the Island trip for the next day and so got myself a much needed early night. The next day I booked my trip and we had a breifing meeting in the afternoon to put us into our groups and to let us know ... read more

Spent two nights in Airlie Beach, it's a bit like Byron Bay. Our main aim was a daytrip to the Whitsunday Islands, in particular Whitehaven Beach to see if it looked like the picture Miles bought me one Christmas. It did. We set out in the early morning on a largish boat to spend the morning on Whitehaven Beach. After crowding onto the viewing platform to take photos I managed to dramatically throw my sunglasses over the edge and onto the rocks below. Nick gallantly offered to try and rescue them but I'm not sure I could have coped with two losses in one day (or was just an excuse to get away from me for a while, mmmm). We trotted over to the beach in the searing heat. The sand was boiling hot, very white ... read more

Hey All! We have just spent our first night in Airlie Beach, having made our way down from Cairns with a Greyhound hop-on, hop-off bus pass. The pass allows us to take our time down the coast and get off anywhere as long as we're always going south and book our seats a day in advance. A great way to see the coast on our own time! Before we left the backpacker party city of Cairns, we made our first attempt at seeing the Reef---a day sea kayaking and snorkeling adventure to nearby Fitzroy Island. This trip has earned the reef the name "Pretty Good Barrier Reef"...no greatness was experienced as a result of the windy conditions and rough seas. Oh yes, and we've discovered that we DO NOT like kayaking in a double kayak. Each ... read more

well after a relaxing day on Fraser island it was back on the bus and up to airlie beach where we were to board a sailing yacht for a 3 day cruise of the whitsundays! Day 1 we settleed into our quaters, confined but comfortable and set sade to turtle bay. That evening we had a super meal followed by a few drinks with a few games thrown in. All in all there was about 15 or so passengers on a large vessed called the apollo - originally a racing yacht. The moon was full and lit up the awesome surrounding scenary, creating a silhouette of the mountains and the rainforrest. Slept well to wake up (day2) to a hearty breakfast and some serious sailing. Despite all my best intentions, I find myself again with 3 weeks of action to sum up without turning out a thesis. Let's pick up where we left off... I was a little sad to be leaving Asia but I was also quivering with excitement about finally setting foot in the Southern Hemisphere. It has been the stuff of dreams for some time and I've not been let down. Again I find myself wishing I'd allowed a little more time here as it's been an almost constant rush to try and see all that I want and even then I've missed out a fair bit that I wanted to include. The flight from Hong Kong was interesting, as I found myself sat next to a woman on the plane who had jacked in her job a ... read more

We arrived in Airlie Beach last Tuesday and checked straight into our boat tour which set sail that night. The sailing trip was absolutely fantastic. We went on a boat called Solway Lass. It was about $100 more expensive ($429 per person) than the majority of the cheaper boats favoured by backpackers, but I would HIGHLY recommend spending the extra money as we have heard really bad stories about the cheaper boats, in particular one called Maxi Samurai. The food on the boat was superb, and the cabins were fine. We went snorkelling in 3 different locations, BluePearl Bay was my favourite - loads of fish and great Coral plus there is a massive Moray Wraiss called Elvis who comes out to see the snorkellers! Along the way we also saw Giant Turtles, 2 Whales, a ... read more
