Well Arlie beach is basically the gateway to the Whitsundays and the great Barrier Reef, so pretty hectic and full of backpackers but we loved it here. Our accomodation was on a hill so great views of the reef from our windows. We booked a 3 day excursion on the Eureka 2. Its a Maxi sailing yacht that still races the Sydney to Hobart and various other races in the summer, but retires in the winter to the whitsundays for practice. We were promised 3 days of pure heaven, cruising the Barrier reef, snorkling and food cooked by al la carte chef. All this was true but they failed to mension that HARDCORE WHITE knuckle sailing was on the agenda and on the first day people were hurling over the back of the boat. We managed ... read more

Well i dont really mean happy easter. Public holidays when you are travelling throws a real spanner in the works!! How dare locals book trips when us foreigners have sceduled to do the same!!!! Am just annoyed as we didnt realise was easter ( we dont even remeber what day it is and if its a week day let alone bank holidays!!!) and turned up to book a sailing trip on easter friday and didnt understand why everything was fully booked!!! Oh well would have been rubbish at sailing anyway. So we flew from bush into rainforest. Such a change in scenery. We stayed in Cairns for 5 days and used it as a base to visit the rainforests, tablelands and great barrier reef. All so beautiful however it is now wet sesson and it wont ... read more

Since Bundaberg we haven't really done anything exciting apart from waste a load of time in Airlie beach. Airlie doesn't offer many daytime activities other than a man made lagoon, but at night there are plenty of bars to keep us occupied. It is the launching place for the Whitsunday trips to the islands and the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef. Are days recently have consisted of getting up going down to the man made lagoon (or La Goon as we like to call it) doing a few somersualts into the water then getting told off by the lifeguard. Then we have tuna salad made in the worst hostel kitchen of all time at Magnums and then hitting up the goon and finishing the night at Mama Africa's bar/club. Everyday has pretty much been ... read more

Got back to Airlie Beach yesterday after three days on our "sailing" trip - I put sailing in inverted brackets as we did absolutely no sailing whatsoever which was very misleading!! However we still had an excellent time and I guess that is all that matters. Had a meeting on the first day where we were told there were 80 of us and only 2 boats! And there was us thinking it would only be about 20 of us sailing the seas! Got onto our boats and made our way to South Mole Island where we'd be staying for the next 2 nights. We could use all the sports facilities there so me and Patrice played a game of tennis (we're nearly as bad as that as we are at pool!) then headed for the buffet ... read more

Just trying to waste a few hours as we've checked out and have our sailing meeting at 1.30pm. We'll then meet the people we have to spend the next 3 days and 2 nights with - hope everyones nice and we're not stuck with any weirdos! We're sailing around the Whitsunday Islands - actually learning to sail ourselves which should be fun, though we've heard its hard work too. Also get to do lots of snorkelling and sunbathing I guess though the weathers not been great the last few days. When we got the bus from Mission Beach the bus had to struggle through the flooded road (which later got shut down as it was so bad so we're lucky we made it to Magnetic Island!) Today we woke up and saw the sun (which we ... read more

Airlie beach is the getaway to the Whitsundays...except drinking and buying souvenirs, not much to do around here!! The main street is about 1 km long and once you've done that, you've been pretty much everywhere in the city! :) There is also a lagoon just like in Cairns but the weather hasn't been good enough to swin in it. We sailed in the beautiful 65 foot sail boat DreamCatcher for two days two nights and that was quite an experience. There were 14 of us plus the skipper and host/decky who cooked us really good food!! We had vegetables dip every afternoon and pasta, salad, and the second night, we had steak and sausages!! It was just great! Best food i've had in weeks :) The first ngith was a bit rough....heaps of waves, but ... read more

01.04.06 So here we are in a new location, great! We have arrived at Airlie beach, the place where so many people leave for their massive tourist attack of the Whitsunday islands, but not us!! we are fed up of hearing about them. After getting settled in we went out to check the town out and the local Saturday market. We put our underwater camers in to be put onto cd, so we were looking forward to that. After lunch we walked along the sea front, you can't swim in the sea here because of the stingers. The town is nice, there is quite a lot of shops, a nice harbour and a lovely lagoon that you can swim in to cool off from this tropical heat. After the quietness of Agnes Water it looks like ... read more

Well we are just about to leave here after spending over a week. The day we arrived, was the day Cyclone Larry hit the coast. If you didn't hear it on the news, it was a cat 5 cyclone. Thats as high as you can get with over 200km winds. The main of the storm was to hit Townsville, which is why we decided to leave and head to Airlie. We still was still going to be in the area where it would hit, but not as much in the middle of it. We were pretty much shitting ourselves, as was the whole Queensland coast. The night it arrived, after spending half an hour trying to park the campervan, away as best we could from trees, as the roof is only fibre glass, and would go ... read more

I've just got back from my sailing trip which was for 3 days and took my around the Whitsunday islands and I must say it was spectacular. To start off with there were meant to be 12 passengers on the boat plus 2 crew although 6 passengers had got their dates confused so were unable to make it. That's a $3,000 mistake they've learned the hard way. Because there as only 6 of us we each had a hand in steerring the boat and raising the sails on the boat which apart from the rope friction burns on our hands was good fun, but hard work. Our 2 crew were Dave, the south aussie skipper and an english girl called Lyndsey from Southampton who was deck hand and cook for the cruise. The food was awesome ... read more
