I emerged from bed at 8am and once dressed...grabbed my street map and embarked on my first Sydney reconnaissance mission which as it turned out, ended up being an epic expedition. Having found St Marys Cathedral pretty easily (my landmark marker), I then wandered slowly through Hyde Park taking in all the fauna and sights and was astounded as to how many joggists were tearing about, especially taking into account how warm it was...86F!!! Mad??? Stark Raving Bonkers if you asked me!!! The Botanical Gardens were really nice too, but, as ever I found something to be worried about...this time, the hundreds of bats dangling upside down in the trees above (Yes, A Return to James's Nightmare!!). Fascinating as they are, I was a little concerned about being crapped on from great heights as I sauntered ... read more

I can't believe I am about to start my 2nd semester here... where did summer go?? Ah, where did the 1st semester even go!?! The past couple weeks have been pretty uneventful. I started back at work at the before/after school program I was at last semester. It's good to have a job again... that was the first time I haven't been working, basically since I was 15! I just found out that, since we now have an assistant manager, or second person in charge, which we didn't have last semester, our hours are getting cut. So now I'm only going to get 2, maybe 3, shifts a week. So that's only 6-9 hours a week, which won't help me survive in this expensive city. So now I have to find a 2nd job that fits ... read more

Its been two weeks back at work since Christmas, and in normality for Sydney in January, the weather is beautiful - the skies are blue, the sun is shining and its only a little bit humid and sticky. Still, I'm hoping that a new year will bring a new outlook on life for most of the city. News reports this week were of 44,000 people having lost their jobs in December. Although the reports have been slightly distorted with temporary christmas staff, this is a huge number of job losses in one short month. Things are certainly tough. Yesterday there was a report in the SHM of a former car salesman who is now selling the Big Issue to pay his bills. Its a terrible fall for some people. On the converse this week was an ... read more

5/1/09 = Return to Sydney Another early rise today because had lots left to do&see before return journey to Sydney at midday. Got showered, changed, packed up and checked out by 9. Set off the Echo Point to get a better view of Three Sisters and hopefully do a good walk round mountains. Enjoyed walk down much more this time and was brilliant when arrived to an absolutely empty viewpoint. Had been full of people on first day, but because we were early, we were only ones there. Was a beautiful day and mountains looked just as good as ever. Had originally thought mist above them was because of cold, but even on clear day today, still a layer of mist sat above them. Had 2 hours at least before needed to catch a train back ... read more

31/12/08 = An Australian New Year Well, after many of our NYE plans being thwarted at the last minute, finally made a conclusive plan yesterday. Decided to still go to Botanical Gardens, but to a different part called Macquaries Point. Apparently supposed to be really busy, brilliant view of fireworks and definitely don't need tickets. With plan in mind, had to get up extra early, have a quick breakfast and shower, then get outfits on. Looked a treat in our silky boxers and capes...although got to admit, I didn't put my cape on until we got there. Walked to meet Hat's friends at St James' station, as they had been year before and were showing us the way. All this was at 10am. Were supposed to be getting supply of alcohol that morning too, but apparently ... read more

Happy (belated) Holidays, everyone!! Hope you all had a wonderful, cold Christmas back home. As much as I hate winter, Christmas and the whole holiday season just hasn't been the same. Buttt I can't complaing, I've been working on my tan while you guys are shoveling your driveways! Mua hahaha... Anyways, since moving into my new place and finishing work for the holidays, I have been so busy!! Last week my mom and I went to dinner with Andy so they could finally meet, and we went to one of my favorite restaurants in The Rocks, a deliciously amazing tapas bar called Firefly, right on the water. I probably have never been so full in my life. We had so many amazing tapas and drinks, it was a great night! Afterwards we took my mom to ... read more

It was an emotional moment when we boarded the Greyhound for our last bus trip (and hopefully our last overnight journey), but our sadness was overcome by excitement as this time we were heading for Sydney! The journey went quickly and having had plenty of practice sleeping in cramped, uncomfortable positions on buses we managed to catch some zzz's...well at least i did, Ian favored the on-board entertainment which came in the form of 'Cool Runnings' over sleep! We arrived in Sydney bright and early in the morning, three hours earlier than expected. We weren't quite sure how the driver managed to make up that amount of time, but with a loud "Wake up everyone, wakey wakey, I'm awake so you all should be" announcement over the bus microphone we soon realised he was pretty crazy ... read more

Today was quite a day. I finally met up with my friend Lisa down at Central Sydney, and we caught a bus to Kings Street where we had a lovely Thai lunch. We then headed back to Circular Quay and took many possible (hopefully) Christmas card pictures! It was great to go back down to the Harbour. I love the little shops along the waterfront, and just sitting there looking out across the water. There was this crazy Aboriginal Techno group there, that mixed the natural sounds (ex. didgeridoo) with techno music. It was quite entertaining actually, you could choose to pose with one of the guys who was in complete Aboriginal costume (if that's the right way to put it), but I kind of chickened out. I guess when I go back there I'll do ... read more
