The big event for our final day in Sydney was "High Tea" at the Sydney Opera House! I'm not sure if it's because the event was a little pricey or because it was "high tea", but Brian and I were easily the youngest people in attendance by at least 20 years! Anyway, the event occurs once a month in the famous Bennelong Restaurant at the Opera House and runs from 2-4 PM. We got mildly dressed up for the occasion (me in a sundress - Brian in khakis and a button down) and we're pleasantly surprised when we were escorted to one of the best tables in the place! We were essentially right in the middle of the restaurant at our own table for two. The restaurant offers fantastic views of Sydney Harbour, Circular Quay and ... read more

Our flight to Sydney went really well. We left out of LAX about 15-20 minutes late and ended up arriving in Sydney a few minutes late as a result, around 7:45am. We cleared immigration and customs with no problems and right outside of the arrivals gate was a Vodafone shop where we bought our prepaid SIM cards. The prepaid plans have changed a bit since we left Germany and data is now included since so many people have smart phones. I think my little pink Nokia phone will have to be retired and make room for a Droid after this. We took the train from the airport to Sydney Central Station, which is only a few blocks walking distance from our hotel. We stayed at The Great Southern Hotel. It's in an older building and seems ... read more

Well, since we didn’t get to bed until after 2:30 this morning, you can bet that we did not rouse right out of bed for a full day in Sydney. And of course the sun was actually shining a little, between the clouds. Around 11 or so we were finally up and ready to have lunch. The sun was starting to come out, the umbrellas were away and our stomachs were growling. The Rocks has great little sidewalk cafes and shops. We grabbed a quick bite to eat and then walked along George St. and took in all the high end shops. Kirsten has been trying to find a place to get her haircut, but she knew the salon located between the Burberry Shop and Louis Vitton was going to be too expensive. We have been ... read more

It was time to hit the road to Sydney but not before we came across a tiny wee Scottish toon called MacLean!! Any feelings of home-sickness we had was soon cured when we drove in and noticed that all the lamp-posts were wrapped in tartan with banners advertising highland games! Putting on our heaviest Scot’s accents – and just incase anyone didn’t notice them Paul made sure people knew where we were from by proudly marching the streets in his Scotland top! Sure enough the local butcher noticed, but even better he was able to sell us some Lorne sausage and haggis – lunch and dinner sorted!!! It felt just like home, but warmer ;-) From Maclean to Sydney was a hefty drive so we stopped off on the way and sampled some of the great ... read more

Day 128-129 11th-12th January On the 11th we just wandering around Sydney a lot really, we had very mixed feelings about this place, it felt an awful lot like london, except it was a lot warmer and everyone was very tanned, very blond and very fabulous looking! We felt a little self conscious with our scruffy clothes! Also, unlike South America, a high percentage of backpackers in Australia are in their early twenties or on their 'gap yah' and while Ellory and i like to get drunk as much as the next person, we don't really do non-stop partying anymore! However we were really looking forward to our first Australian wedding present the next day at the Sydney Opera House, so on the Wednesday, we got all dolled up in our lovely hotel room. It ... read more

We’ve finally arrived in Sydney after the panic over the weather, Oli’s 38.6 degree fever on Christmas day and 23 hours of flying! We were a bit apprehensive about flying with China Eastern Airlines after reading some rather unsavoury reviews about them, but we were very chuffed with the service, free pillows and blankets and loads of gorgeous Chinese food, including the best prawn curry we’ve ever eaten. Before we could go through immigration in Shanghai we had to ditch our English food we had brought with us in case China Eastern’s food wasn’t up to scratch. As Oli cannot throw anything away, we sat and scoffed bananas, apples, yoghurts and nuts before going through immigration. Oli dumped our emergency chicken sandwiches which had gone a bit iffy in a bin, and then a security official ... read more

It's Monday here and time to do some sightseeing. Tried routing a trip by bus as there is supposedly a free bus that runs continuously in the downtown district, but gave up and opted to stick with the more familiar train routes. Walked to Central Station then got off at each stop on the way to Circle Quay to explore the sites. Hyde Park had some museums and memorials to Australian and New Zealand soldiers, and some lovely landscaping. At St. James Square we saw some old barrack buildings and St. Mary's Cathedral. We went inside the cathedral and Mike was chastised by the security guard for failing to remove his cap. Guess his days as an altar boy failed him today as a tourist. Headed on to the Circle Quay to check out the wharf ... read more

Wbrew dotychczasowej konwencji postanowiłam opisać trzy dni spędzone w Sydney w dwóch wpisach tematycznych: Opera (dziś) i cała reszta (jutro). Gdy tylko ogłoszono wyniki konkursu i Utzon został naczelnym architektem Opery, cała... read more

The week that followed was once again a busy one with me coaching every day and evenings spent (when not out and about) writing lesson plans for extra cash that I have already decided would be spent on having a suit tailor made whilst in Thailand, can’t wait! Bowks, amidst her scheduled hours at the ice cream shop, played the all important tourist guide for her mum, dad and brother, visiting the central business district of the city, Darling Harbour, Circular Quay, Bondi Beach and not to miss the all important ferry crossing to Manly which gives stunning views of Sydney Harbour and bridge, especially at sunset and from what I understand they weren’t disappointed. One of the evenings we had a BBQ on the balcony of Bowks’ family accommodation which was just down the road ... read more
