Married 32 years, this is the first 3-week vacation for my husband and me. We will be traveling in Australia by car and plane, for a day or two of business and the rest for pleasure. Family and friends have asked us to take lots of pictures, and this blog will be a good way for them to follow our adventures and for us "seniors" to remember the details of our trip!

Ah, the time has come to bid adieu to our Aussie friends and head back to reality (work!). It is a cloudy, rainy day in Melbourne, but still warm and muggy. Looks like a good sign that it's time to leave. Flew from Melbourne to Sydney, then on United from Sydney to L.A. Mike was relieved that Maureen was able to be ugraded to Business Class for this flight, as it saved him from having to do the noble thing and volunteer to trade seats! The better food, unending drinks, comfortable seat/bed, continuous attention from the flight attendants, individual movie screen and selection of viewing material...all contributed to a much more enjoyable and relaxing flight. We just didn't understand why United didn't serve turkey on Thanksgiving Day. We arrived in L.A. at 9:30, then stood in ... read more

Mike was going over to the CRCSI conference about 11 a.m. to give his presentation this afternoon, so we had a lazy morning and relaxing breakfast at the B&B. Once he left I spent some time catching up on the blog, then ventured out on the trolley to get in some more city sights before we leave for home tomorrow. It is a windy and cloudy day, but still very hot and humid. I met Mike at his conference site and we took the trolley back "home" so he could change clothes before we went out for dinner. The free trolley stops at 6 p.m. so we made sure we were back on it and on our way to Chinatown before then. We wandered the street for a bit looking at menus, then decided to follow ... read more

At breaky today we were discussing the day's plan with Paul when the mystery of the no-toll toll road was solved. Paul informed us there is a sophisticated camera and database system that photographs the license plate (registry) of EVERY car that goes on the toll road (mind you, these are sometimes 3-4 lanes each direction). A driver can go online or call a phone number before or after the trip to arrange payment, but will incur a fine if the toll is not paid within 72 hours of travel. Frequent travellers can buy a pass, of course, but are not allowed to let anyone else use it. How a visitor is supposed to know all this we have no idea. The car rental and road maps made no mention of it. Even Paul spent over ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne » City Centre November 22nd 2010

Today we decided to spend exploring the city. There is a free trolley that circles the city center and provides commentary on the sites and landmarks. Somewhat unfortunately, the weather decided to turn hot today. But not to be deterred, we lathered ourselves in sunscreen and set out for the day's adventures. We decided to get off the trolley at Federation Square--a busy intersection of railroad station, downtown businesses, parks and visitor information center. We took photos and wandered along the Yarra River for awhile, ultimately finding ourselves at the Sports Complex--Rod Laver Tennis Stadium and the Cricket Grounds. No sporting events were going on, however. We almost took the tour of the Cricket Grounds but didn't want to spend the 1 1/2 hours it would take (at least one of us didn't). Waiting for the ... read more

Our Bed & Breakfast in Melbourne is a quaint old building built around 1850. It used to be a bakery, and the brick ovens have been preserved as part of the decor in the breakfast (breaky) room. There are 4 guest rooms, each with its own private bathroom (but across or down the hall from the bedroom). The room we booked was quite small, with just enough room to walk around the bed. Great for a day or two, but we will be here 5 nights and started debating the pros and cons of moving to another location. After a wonderful breakfast, however, and lively discussions with our host, Paul, and a couple visiting from Scotland, we thought the charm and character of the place combined with the opportunity to meet other travellers would outweigh not ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Great Ocean Road November 20th 2010

Today we started off with a quick look at Mount Gambier's Blue Lake. We were in luck, as the lake had already started its annual November turning to turquoise color. A very brisk morning air and bright sunshine added to the enjoyment of the views of this crater lake. Then we hit the road so we could take our time on the Great Ocean Road. We still had to drive a good distance to pick up the eastern end of it in Warrnambool, however, so we headed east on the Princes Highway, making a quick stop in Portland for fuel (our GPS sent us into a residential section in search of a non-existent gas station, but we did stumble upon quite a nice ocean view from the hilltop) and went into Port Fairy for a look-see ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Mount Gambier November 19th 2010

Today we spent driving from Adelaide to Mount Gambier. We stopped in the sleepy little town of Murray Bridge to get maps and tourist guides for the Great Ocean Road. A woman there gave us lots of booklets on the area and suggested we take the southern "coastal" route from there rather than the highway, telling us that coastal routes are always more scenic. Well, after a couple of hours of seeing next to nothing we decided to turn inland a bit to the faster road. We hadn't seen any ocean at this point, but did see a pink lake and a green lake. The pink lake is due to a chemical produced by algae in the salt-water lake when water levels become low as a way to protect itself from UV rays. The green lake ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Barossa Valley November 18th 2010

What a fantastic day (again!). Today we drove to Barossa Valley to check out some wineries. We had a newspaper section reviewing Australian wines but managed to leave it in our room. Probably worked out even better for us without it because we happened upon some amazing wineries and some great people we might not have otherwise encountered. We arrived in the town of Lyndoch with the hope of finding an area winery map. A beautiful little place with many restaurants and roses everywhere but no visitor center. So we went into the Post Office to ask where we could find information. The woman there sent us to the Kies Family Winery for a map. At the Kies winery we found a charming Cellar Door (tasting room) and a very friendly tasting hostess. Tastings are usually ... read more

We started with a travel "mis"adventure, with GPS and road signs sending us down the wrong side of Cleland Conservation Park in our attempt to meet with Mike's acquaintance, Martin, at the Park's coffee shop. The drive was on a narrow, winding road that was pretty but a little scary. We DID arrive at a coffee shop at the appointed time, just the wrong one. So, 45 minutes later we found the right one, with Martin still patiently waiting for us. We had a nice visit before he left for work and we purchased entrance to the Wildlife Park on the site. This park is one of many similar ones in Australia where people can interact with some of the animals found here. Although it is a common site here, we couldn't help feeling excited and ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Australian Capital Territory » Canberra November 16th 2010

We had a few hours more hours to spend in Canberra before catching the plane to Adelaide. We took in the Royal Rose Garden, the Old Parliament House and the Australian War Memorial. While learned quite a bit about the structure and history of the Australian government and Australia's participation in World Wars I and II, the Korean conflict, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. Actually got pretty tired walking around so left for the airport early. When we landed in Adelaide we found out the time there is 1/2 hour earlier than in Canberra! Had never heard of time changes other than in 1 hour increments. We found our lodgings uneventfully--a first!... read more
