Sunday before last: Adam ran in the City to Surf race, and did a great job. With him running were tons of people in costumes..Our favorites included Men at Work (running, towing a fridge with beer), men dressed in sperm outfits (promoting condoms), gorillas (apparently there was a whole pack of them), and Tricky Dick (a man wearing a Nixon mask and undies, and nothing else.). After Adam finished, Mel, Jan and I sat on the beach for the afternoon and played frisbee (much to the chagrin of our surrounders) and played with the waves. There were people in the water; the water was relatively warm, but there was some wind, so it was too cold outside for my tastes to go in. Soon, surf lesson though. Last Sunday: Andrew, Adam and I set off with ... read more

So there's been calls for an update. I'm terrible at this consistency thing. But here's a bit of a look into daily life at Sydney Uni. Monday- Aboriginal Religions Lecture 11-1 with Richard Simmons. It's not Richard Simmons, but the idea is the same. The clothes are the same. Still, it's a really interesting lecture. From 1-2, a group of us go to lunch and sit on the grassy fields and look at the clouds..Just kidding, Sydney rarely has clouds. But we do sit out on the grass and it is great. From 2-3 we have Aboriginal Religions Tutorial (whcih means discussion) with Count Dracula. His name is Vaselli, and he is Greek, but he looks like Count Dracula. At 6pm, we have Formal Dinner at the Women's College, where we dress in academic gowns and ... read more

The Clarks were nice enough to take me to the Blue mountains for 2 days; which are these beautiful small mountains with sandstone cliffs. We saw the three sisters (three sort of cylindrical erroded cliffs sticking up from the side of the mountain) and the Wall, which is this massive grand canyon-esque sandstone cliff area, except grown everywhere are gum trees. It's absolutely gorgeous, yet we had pretty much the whole place to ourselves. Narelle said that it gets crowded on weekends with people escaping to their country retreats, but still, it's devoid of 'touristy' infrastructure, which I loved. We went to a huge cave, and stayed at this place called "The Cave House" which is an old country retreat big inn with a large dining hall and reading rooms and the like. It was cold ... read more

Today we went to the Powerhouse museum, which is like the Franklin Institute, only not as cool..Except they had a fabulous greek exhibit. I'm very impressed with all the archeology museums/exhibits we've seen; Sydney uni has an amazing little free archaeology museum that we took a tour of. I think I'll add an archeology class. Then we went on a walking tour with other international students and met some really nice ones and had a good time. We went out for dinner and had some...KANGAROO!! and CROCODILE!!! Finally! Kangaroo is AMAZING. Really tender and juicy and fantastic. My next business venture is to raise kangaroos (in the place of cattle).. they're also better for the environment. Crocodile tastes like chicken-really. We went to a small party tonight which was reminiscent of freshman year, but we met ... read more

Hello, hello. 2nd day of international orientation=ho-hum as well. I think we've all had a dramatic crash from the high of traveling (and the incredibleness of the boat trip) to a sort of less...high paced life of the city. It's weird, that Sydney would be less fast-paced than traveling. I don't know. It feels weird to be in one place for so long. Last night, as we all needed an adventure, we walked down to Newtown, which is a street of restaurants (mostly Asian food) and Karl got massive heaps of Thai food. Janice and I split a fried ice cream, as we had already had free dinner provided by the Women's College. Then we took the bus to Darling Habour, (spelled the british way of course) and walked around the waterfront. It was beautiful, and ... read more

International orientation day one was ho-hum, although all orientations are, by law, ho-hum. Too many Americans...out of the 300 people in the room, 225 were Americans. After meeting so many neat foreigners, it was a big culture shock to be face to face with so many of our own kind. We've somehow gotten ourselves into dinner with a few people from UNC and Duke, but blech. Today we watched a sheep shearing demo, in which one of the sheep escaped its pen to be with his friend sheep who was out of the pen and was running around the campus. It was hilarious. Then the sheepdog went after it, and we had an accidental sheep dog demonstration. Sheep are funny looking, and to shear them you have to flop them so they sit upright against your ... read more
