Day 4 and 5 we spent exploring Sydney via the Ferry system, which is very neatly linked with the bus and trains, and for $15 you can ride them all day...we used our pass for a night run of the harbour later that evening. Dave and Sheila climbed Sydney Tower and saw the city in all its glory. We headed off on the Manly ferry, and met Manny, who at 80 was a great storehouse of local knowledge and facts relating to the harbour. Manly is a real gem with a great beach, and abundant shopping and cheap food on the Corso. Sandra says that if we go back, our base will be Manly, and we'll ferry to Sydney as required...Ok by me, they have a rugby team. After a day of riding the surf, ... read more

Started today by heading down to The Rocks, the older park of the city. We found a good market here so browsed that for quite a while. Next we headed to the bridge and walked about half way along to look out on the harbour. After lunch we caught the ferry to Manly, which is about 30mins from the city. They have a nice beach here and it seemed to be buzzing with people on a hot Saturday afternoon. We easily spent a few hours relaxing and people watching - the conclusion is that Sydney has a lot of attractive people! Many surfer dudes and beach babes! Enjoyed fish and chips at the beach and a few drinks before catching the ferry back to spend the rest of the evening in the city.... read more

Another day in the big city! As i was getting up, the 12 hour Mardi Gras party was probably just finishing! After a long lie in (the first one for a long time.... this travelling thing is hard work!) we got up and got the ferry from Sydney Harbour to Manly Beach. There are loads of lovely beaches around sydney and Manly is one of them. As Sunday is a day of rest, that is exactly what i did. Sunbathed and chilled on the beautiful beach most of the day, people watching and watching the surfers. Had a look around the shops but resisted and had a picnic by the beach. Got the ferry back to Sydney this afternoon. A nice easy day! tomorrow, hopefully going to repeat todays events but this time at Bondi Beach! ... read more

There's one other girl from the States here. She actually lives right down the street from UR! We ponder life and remember the good times of being in Richmond. She's always coming up with things like "did you do this did you do that?" and most of the time I'm like "no" and then she says "did you really go to the University of Richmond?" and I'm like "yes". It's like a vicious cycle. I did all I wanted to, minus seeing a movie at the Byrd Theater. eh ehmm. Hallie and I (that's the gal from Richmond) made dinner for everyone the night before last. We made breakfast for dinner. Bacon, eggs, omelets, pancakes, french toast and fruit salad. It was superb, except for the fact that I cooked enough pancakes and french toast for ... read more

Serene, not all the congestion ( and action) of Sydney Harbour. top crew. Beers at club after. Evening spruik Newport amongst dining scene excellent. Feb 18. Spruik Dee Why. Why? Felt like it. Pleasant morning. Surf club works $3.50. Bread, egg, onions, two sausages, two rashers bacon. Cruised back north Newport. Old lady in bookstore said humidity would end mid March, sometimes earlier. We caught the Manly ferry from Central Quay. It was absolutely jam-packed with hundreds of passengers. The half hour cruise is very scenic. We had half an hour on the beach - seeing our first Aussie surfers. The sun was very strong. We decided to do the walk to 'The Spit' along the bay. It undulates in an out of lovely coves (dotted with affluent housing). In one remote bay we came upon a wedding party on the beach sipping champagne and having photos taken. The walk was quite exhausting and it was a relief to reach the Spit for the bus journey back to Manly and then the much quieter return ferry trip to Central Quay. ... read more

After 26 painful hours on the plane we arrived in Sydney on Saturday morning. At the airport we attempted to figure out the aussie pay phones (no dice) but luckily Roger spotted and rescued us after 4 failed calls. From the airport on the train to Circular Quay then out on the ferry to Mosman. Mosman is a suburb of Sydney across the harbour so on the way we go right past the harbour bridge and the opera house. Found the opera house quite surprising. I had always thought it was quite large and very white. Neither are true. Today we went to the beach out at Manley. Bought some shorts and a hat for Pam. Also got bombed by a Seagull.. Pam says there's a story here becuase aussie seagulls are a creepy smaller version ... read more

After three intense days of sightseeing, I choose to check out the local beaches a bit for some R & R. I am actually staying in lovely Manly Beach with Rob and Lindy, my wonderful hosts, who are spoiling me wrotten and who are truly the hosts with the mosts. After taking the ferry from Sydney over to Manly yesterday, Lindy picked my up from the Ferry Wahrf and we went to their house up on the hill, overlooking the bay. Can you say amazing!!! After a bit of chit chat and throwing a load of laundry in the wash, I went down to the beach, laid out, took a swim in the Pacific, and generally blended in quite well with the other tourists and surfers. In the afternoon, Lindy and Rob took me around Manly ... read more
