Hi Everyone! I am coming down to my last days in Sydney. I can't believe that I have been here for a month. It is easy to loose track of time. I have had a really great time here and met a lot of really fun people. Since it is the low season for tourism in Sydney most of the travelers that I have met are here on a working holiday visa like me. We all have a lot in common. We are all looking for work and planning on being away from home for a long time. There is so many decisions that go into living abroad in a foreign country, even if that country is an English speaking one. A few years ago I couldn't even contemplate coming to a foreign country without a ... read more

When my 6th grade teacher, Ms. Johnson, first gave the assignment to correspond in letter format with a pen-pal from Australia she ignited the wanderlust flame that has never faded. After she received a package of letters in a large manilla envelope, Ms. Johnson stood in the middle of the classroom among a class of excited students. She passed out each letter from Australia to each corresponding pen-pal in my 6th grade class at Weber Elementary. When she stopped to say, "Wow, some of these letters are just amazing," then called my name, I knew it was something rare. Now, a teacher myself, I am returning to travelblog with a profound appreciation for my educational upbringing. As an independent traveler for this lifelong dream to travel Australia, I dedicate all Australian blogs to sixteen years of ... read more

Today we went to Taronga Zoo. Again we were wide awake all night and sleep in the morning, so we left about 12:30 Walked to Darling Harbour to catch the ferry :/ fortunately its not a long journey. Eventhough I don't like boats it was nice to see the city from a distance, pass under the bridge and pass the Opera House. Really enjoyed the zoo. I felt you could get nearer to the animals then you woudl here. I loved the giraffes, of course. They were veryfriendly, coming near the fence. The view was great here. As your looking at the giraffes, behind them all you can see is the harbours, and city in the distance. You were able to feed the giraffes for $25 and get a pic but after seeing them slobbering all ... read more

Today we slept in again. Today we walked the length of George Street from our hotel to Circular Quay. Had a look at the Opera House from a distance. Walked around The Rocks area of Sydney. There was a small market with a guy singing (well) on the street. Seemed a nice area to be in. We then sat in McDonalds or McCafe and had a crossaint and used their free wifi for a bit. Then we walked back down George Street looking in the shops and exploaring a bit more. We went back to the hotel and had an exciting dinner of jam sandwiches and crisps. We decided we wanted to watch the Royal Wedding btu didn't want to sit around waiting for it to start so we went for another wander. Passed through Chinatown ... read more

Greetings one and all, Hope you are having a great Easter Sunday - or it will be once you all wake up! It's now 3.43pm here and I've had such a busy day. Had a lovely chat with mumsie and pal this morning, had to check out of my hotel here so I stored my luggage and made my way to catch the Monorail. Plan of action for the day was to get to the Sydney Tower early doors and get on a Skywalk over the city. Unfortunately I was met by an extremely rude security guard at Westfields who not only told me the shopping centre was closed (you access the tower from inside) that the Tower would be closed too as it's a public holiday! Bad times. Having found out that and also, I ... read more

Well g'day there my ol' fruits! How's it goin?! I must say I've been a busy bee... so where to start?? Well following my nap yesterday (was the best nap ever!!) i woke up to an amazing sunset. It was such a lovely day yesterday - about 26 degrees and with a sunset to match. I was still feeling a little ropey following the nap so I just popped down to Darling Harbour. I had a little mooch around the shops - it would be rude not to after all. We've a festival going on too with lots of street performers.... I watched a guy, who I swear was from the Swindon area on a bike balancing on top of a pole juggling! I kid you not! Also watched a really awesome street dancing acrobatic group. ... read more

G'day one and all Well what a start to the holiday. Seat 2K lived up to it's expectation! Lovely long seat which folded into a full on bed (!) champers, good food, a sleep suit - what more could I want?! Well there were the usual characters up there...the doctor type, the dolly bird and the german lady who sat next to me but clearly did not want to talk to me. The conversation lasted 3 words from me and a grunt from her... Took that as my cue to pipe down. 3 seats down was a Chinese lady who clearly has some gas issues she needs to resolve!! She came and stood at the bottom of my bed after the meal and, I'm not kidding must have produced continuous belches for 3 mins before going ... read more

Now for those who read the previous blog on Uluru I have some updates. It was pointed out to me that I had missed some very important information and that I should insert them at the begining of this entry. Now whilst we were at the rock and appeared to be suffering at the hands of the weather, we did in fact get sight of our first and only wild kangaroo, that is to say not behind a wire cage. Added to this we also seen a group of wild camels passing through the park. How I could of omitted this I do not know. In addition I also forgot to mention the drinks party as the sun set which was very enjoyable with ample supplies of wine and hor deuves. (thats french for snacks) Onward! ... read more

We have cruised into Sydney Harbor a dozen times and it is always a thrill. This time there was more anticipation than usual as we had to wait an hour for the pilot to board and take us into port. But that extra hour allowed us to enter at daylight instead of in the predawn darkness. Since two of the Cunard Queens were already in port we were docked around the bend at Darling Harbor instead of Circular Quay. But fortunately we got to sail by the Queen Mary II and the brand new Queen Elizabeth, cruise by the iconic Sydney Opera House and then pass under the Harbor Bridge on the way to our berth. This was our shortest stay ever—a mere fifteen hours to visit one of the great cities of the world. But ... read more

In Darling harbour is the famous National Maritime Museum. As we had passed this many times we decided to go and visit. We were able to get onto a submarine and a destroyer ship and look around. The submarine was called HMAS Onslow. It is an Oberon class submarine made in 1968. To get into the submarine you had to be very bendy and go through lots of hatches and holes that kept it watertight when it was underwater. It was a long way down the ladder and the size of the beds that they men had to sleep on reminded me of a play house they looked so small. The man told us that the men could be under the sea for weeks without coming up for air and that there would be 3 men ... read more
