. Today we are starting our long trek south (again), first stop Victoria! We continue to have fabulous weather and this morning was no exception - the sky was blue with hardly a cloud, it warmed up pretty quickly and we didn’t have to wear coats! To give you an idea, the people in the cabin next door left with running shorts on… We are just hoping that by making this comment we aren’t jinxing the rest of the trip! A quiet morning by the pool reading an F1 magazine... doesn't get much better for me. Lazed around in the sun, then went for a walk along the beach in the afternoon, spotting a Karmhan Ghia for sale. Bargain at $5200 - less than £3000, and only 33,000 miles. I'd already set up my car import export company. I'll source the cars over here and ship them back to Scotland for Ryan to sell. A perefect plan ruined by the fact I am skint and have no job to earn money. Wonder if they would take Mastercard?. After walking back the few miles I'd traipsed along the beach I could hear tonights entertainment kick off. He had the looks of Mr T and the musical ability to match, I pity the fool. So avoiding Mr T, ... read more

in the District of Columbia It's an odd play on words on DC licence plates - subtly mocking the catch cry of the revolution of 1775. I didn't get the joke till Mary explained it to me. It's a fantastic city is Washington, built to Pierre l'Enfant's master plan for the new capital. It has wide boulevards, the National Mall (as opposed to Mall of America) and is adorned with so many gorgeous neoclassical buildings. Jen and I arrived on Friday morning at 5.20 am. Lesson for the day - red eye flights are not that crash hot across the USA. We were both thrilled to see Pete and Mary as we stepped out of the airport an hour later into the bucketing rain and DCs morning rush hour. To see so many cars on ... read more

After that mad 300 dollar night (not even one free bottle of champers), we went to a brilliant village called Calistoga. There was a tasting festival on and we just sat on the grass, imbibing excellent white wines and listening to a live dixie jazz style band of old codgers giving their instruments what for. The place we stayed was maybe the best bit - The Calistoga Inn is an old French design they said, all wood panelling and creaky floorboards. I felt like Huckleberry Finn. Here they had an interesting looking book on one of the shelves....something like "A painstaking work of breathtaking genius"; I read quite some pages, but didnt want to swap it with the books I had brought myself. In Calistoga we had the most exquisite meal of our lives at some ... read more

We moved from Vermont to New Hampshire today. During the trip we visited Woodstock, a small town with many fine buildings and the Queche gorge, one of the more impressive geological features in Vermont. We are now staying in Wolfeboro, a delightful small town on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee in the lakes region of New Hampshire. ... read more

So today is Monday. Its snowing and Im a damn ice cube. This is exactly why I hate Colorado. The state just doesnt give me a break! LOL! Anyways, got in yesterday morning at around 1100 on the Medevac from Scott AFB, IL... That was the longest short flight ever. It would normally take around 1 hour but it took about 2.5 hours because its the slow C130! Oh and the climate sucked too! It was very very very cold at first then it turned into hell then hell froze over for about an hour then hell opened its damn doors again and finally froze over for one last time! We landed and I didnt even realize it! I was very upset when I got off the plane to find out how friggin cold it was/is ... read more

Well i can't really remember what ive been up to all week but i will try my best. tuesday night me and heather taught another english class. it was the funnest one yet. we have realized that they realisitically they aren't gonna learn much due to the fact that are about 10 years old and me and heather have no idea what were doing...so basically we decided to be retards and make it really funny. we were dancing and teaching them the "head and shoulders knees and toes" song and doing random things like that. it was really fun. and heather drew a really really ugly picture on the board of a girl so we could teach them body parts and she put curly hair on it and the supervisor lady was like sarah thats you...i ... read more

Well, 15 more days and we’re off. It’s been a long time coming, but it really hasn’t set in that I’m going yet. It’s starting to though. The excitement; the anticipation; the realization that I’m leaving home for an undetermined amount of time. I even had my first pang of fear the other day - God I’ve missed that! What’s that? What am I talking about, oh humble readers (all 3 of you)? My first backpacking trip in over 5 years, that’s what! Thankfully, the wait is almost over. In 15 short days, Rob and I will be embarking on a kick-ass journey through South Korea, Japan, Thailand (and hopefully through Cambodia), Malaysia, Singapore, and New Zealand. Oh, for anyone who doesn't know me, my name is Tom Haarman, and as you can see, I'm about ... read more

I've taken a few days off from my vacation. That's right, I'm in one of the coolest cities I've ever been to, and I'm working, taking naps, and drinking coffee (of course.) I have a list of things I want to see and things that I have to get done, for example, buy deodorant so I don't smell, and none of this happens. Instead, I wake up early because the old lady in my room can't hear what a RACKET she's making, I go downstairs into the kitchen, make a cup of tea, and sit next to one of the other "lifers" here at the hostel. I read my leather-bound book of poetry and I make some waffels. I talk occasionally, mostly about how tired I am and everyone is, I read the paper, I smile ... read more
