So I have come out on the other side of my first thanksgiving meal without the family, and I managed to survive with only a few minor burns and scratchs! So heres the story of my first thanksgiving: Lupita and I went food shopping (after scouting out the stores for where to get everything), and that only took us about 4 hours. And I am not even kidding. As it is clearly not thanksgiving here, and American thanksgiving isnt until November, the stores didnt have the best selection of turkey. So turns out all they had was smoked turkey, which eventually turned out fine, but let me tell you... oie. We (Lupita, Eduardo and I), so we called their grandson who is a chef, and it actually turns out that the kind we got, you only ... read more

Hello All!! After a long flight to Atlanta and a lot of meals and snacks followed by a short flight to Cahn-Cooon (the purser´s pronunciation, not ours) we arrived at our hostel (Chac-Mool) in Downtown Cancun around 8pm. It´s nice and humid, around 30 degrees, a nice change from the Dutch rain :) We had yet another little snack and went to bed, and had no trouble falling asleep. I (Floor) was awoken by Krista at around 4.30 am because she was convinced there was an animal (a large spider or scorpion) walking in our airconditioning. I mumbled "no don´t worry it´s a cat or a bird" (obviously) and went straight back to sleep. Today we explored the Av. Tulum and then took a bus to the Hotel Zone, we didn´t fall for the bus driver´s ... read more

Alors voici mes premiers etonnements...

I shelled out over $900 on a new bike before our vacation a couple of weeks ago. I’ve taken it on tons of rides, two of which were the best I’ve been on: the Flume Trail and High Meadows. The Flume Trail kicked off with what I thought was a brutal, four mile up hill ride, with a few wide switchbacks and less gradual inclines for the occasional breather. The payoff was an epic, lake view from high along the mountain side. After the ascent, the actual Flume Trail portion was a fairly fun, flat, twisting, single track ride that wraps the mountain crest. This section also had a fair amount of oncoming bike traffic. Since I’m fairly green to mountain riding, I wasn’t confident of proper etiquette. This caused a fair amount of falling into ... read more

Checked out with a heavy heart and a pounding head. Greeted by the local Grand Poobah in the car park, taking himself and his Poobah Pal very seriously. You've gotta love the hats. Stocked up on Pittas at the 7-11 and went for a look around the "famous" St Petersburg Pier. Was pretty dull and very quiet. October is one of the quietest months for vacationers here, which is a god thing as should keep the Motel prices down. Left Tampa via what has to be the most picturesque rest stop going. Just before the longest crossing of the Bay, they have this area which is used mostly by truckers. I couldn't help comparing it to Beattock services. Worrying thing though was the many signs saying that the area was patrolled by armed guards at night. ... read more

Guanajuato once a major mining town, nestled on hilly terrain is clean (they actually wash the streets everyday!), colourful and free from traffic lights and neon signs. (It was inscribed as a Unesco World Heritage site since 1988) Narrow cobbled streets leads you through many well preserved colonial buildings and in a tunnel under the city was where the bus dropped me at this wonderful place after a 5 hour bus ride from Patzcuaro. I went at the best time ever as the yearly Cervantino Festival, the biggest arts and music festival in Latin America was being held for the whole month. With the Cervantino festival on, Guanajuato was truly alive. I got a taste of the Cervantino Festival, when a clown jumped on board the city bus and started belting out jokes in Spanish. Although I ... read more

This morning I had to say Goodbye to my host Linda and picked up the rental car near the airport. Linda was nice enough to take me there so I did not have to catch the bus which might take an hour just for a 10 mile ride. I highly recommand whoever seek for relatively cheaper place to stay in Burlington stay with Linda's, she is a very kind woman and will help you to find your way around town. Since the hostel was closed, so I guess her place would be more popular, after all she charge $50/night in slower season and $70/night for peak season. I checked the other motels, they all charged more than hers, not to mention you may get a few free tickets such as cruise and bike rental, ect. ... read more
