Ready to cook my FIRST turkey
First turkey, ever in my life, that I cooked all alone... duh duh duh duuuhhhh So I have come out on the other side of my first thanksgiving meal without the family, and I managed to survive with only a few minor burns and scratchs! So heres the story of my first thanksgiving:
Lupita and I went food shopping (after scouting out the stores for where to get everything), and that only took us about 4 hours. And I am not even kidding. As it is clearly not thanksgiving here, and American thanksgiving isnt until November, the stores didnt have the best selection of turkey. So turns out all they had was smoked turkey, which eventually turned out fine, but let me tell you... oie. We (Lupita, Eduardo and I), so we called their grandson who is a chef, and it actually turns out that the kind we got, you only have to cook half the time, so kind of a bonus I guess, in that department anyway. Shopping is also a tad of a hassle if you dont know the name of what your looking for... apparently there is no spanish word for cranberry or the spice, savory, that I needed for the stuffing. Anyway, I got gravy mix and cranberry jelly (the canned
Olivia helping out
Lovely Olivia helping me cut apples for pie kind we give out at santas) in the import section of a store, and I got the turkey and no savory, veggies (thank you to bradons mom for telling me what a turnip looked like!!! I am ashamed to say I had to make sure I was buying the right thing, and mom, sam, sarah AND Beth all didnt pick up their phones, but bradon did, i heart you! and your mom!) bread, and pie fixings. All went well after the savory-seeking disaster.
So anyway, that was sunday night, and Monday morning I went to school. Lupita picked me up at 10:30 so we could get started. Got home, and got down to work.
I made the stuffing with oregano instead of savory, and it turned out lovely actually! Which I was SOOOOOO happy about, as stuffing is the reason I even live to see thanksgiving day. Haha. It inspires me. I know I sound crazy, but I really really like stuffing.
The veggies all turned out good, I was able to find Sweet potato, thank GOODNESS!!! (and thank the lady shopping in the store. We were looking for sweet potato, and i was saying
papas dulce,
Thanksgiving with a mex twist
So instead of the traditional fall color theme, we had bright gerber daisies we bought fresh from the markets and a crazy bright table cloth to match. Gotta love color!! literally sweet potato, but turns out its not that. so thank god for this lady that walks up and asks if im looking for sweet potato, tells me where to buy it, and tells me what its called. I cant spell what its actually called, so your out of luck for next time your in mexico looking for sweet potato. sorry. )
"And if everyone can please look to the center ring ...." TURKEY!!! As I said, the turkey was smoked, but turned out dandy. The skin was a little crunchy, and slightly dry, but with gravy and or cransberry sauce, it was fabulous!!! I got to carve it and everything. I offered to let Eduardo carve it,but he said it was my meal, so I could do it. Honestly, I didnt know how, so I just faked it, but no one looked at me wierd, so I guess I did it right!
Anyway, so we served the food, had a little wine, sat at our lovely table with the flowers and the nice mexican table cloth, and ate out food! They all loved it, and so did I. Everything smelled perfect, which of course is the idea.
We ended with apple pie that I made, scooped a little ice cream on there, and said what we were thankful for from that year. What a lovely little event.
Stuff like this is the reason we have exchange programs. Lupita and Eduardo are 70, and this was their first thanksgiving, and I was SO happy to host it for them... I told them, the way you know if your done this dinner, is once you feel like your going to explode, you eat one more helping, then dessert and THEN your done. haha
Well, to all you crazy canadian cats out there, hope thanksgiving was fab, and if your not giving thanks over turkey today, hope it was just as groovy!!
Love ya!
