Paddy Mackin of NW Exposures and his two faithful grips (Nan and Shaddy) made a twelve day photo safari in early October to the east side of the Cascade Range in Washington State. The caravan was comprised of a lightweight, fold-out Quicksilver tent trailer towed behind a four cylinder, sure-footed, all-wheel- drive Subaru Forester. This combo downshifts from 5th to 3rd gear going up steeper inclines, and sometimes crawls up a very steep ascent in second gear, often behind of creep of slow 18 wheelers. The first photo destination on the safari was 5-star rated, 300 foot Clear Creek Falls, snuggled into a cliff side about 2.5 miles east of White Pass along U.S. 12. There are only three 5-star rated waterfalls within the Mount Rainier Region of “A Waterfall Lover’s Guide to the Pacific Northwest.” ... read more

I just got a free cruise ticket from Mr Hartwell!!! Although I was on the ferry on Lake Champlain, it does not hurt to go for an afternoon cruise especially the weather was really nice and the ticket was free, :) Just before noon I found myself sitting outside of Leunig's Cafe enjoying Boeuf Bougegnon. The weather was rather cool, so that hearty dish just a perfect one for it, not to mention for the quality and quantity of it, $12 does not seem much, after all it is a french bistro. The lake cruise started at about 1:30 pm,the sun was still shinning but according to the forecast it was going to be cloundy and rainny in the late afternoon.Soon as I got on board I ordered some pineapple juice, since I just had ... read more

October 9, 2006, Friday. We started the day biking around Eureka, the home of some wonderful old Victorian Mansions, evidence of the wealth of the lumber business years gone-by. The town today seems to be hodgepodge of trendy shops, cafes, old bars, old businesses many closed and lots of homeless souls. Of course, Bob found a brewery, The Lost Coast Brewery, and we had the obligatory sampler. In this area there is a large Mexican population, so the Mexican restaurants are quite good. Down the road we deviated into the Humboldt Redwoods SP, Avenue of the Avenue of the Giants, an auto tour. It is the glitzy version of the Redwood Forest, trees cut for autos to drive through (?) for a fee, lots and lots of redwood touristy stuff. A little too commercial for ... read more

welcome to our travel blog! Here we will keep track of our adventures as we cross Canada for the benefit of ourselves and friends and family interested in hearing about what we’ve been up to! First I will begin by explaining how we got this opportunity to do this trip. Geoff works for a company called BOOM! Marketing. He was involved in the development of a program for one of their clients, Schick, to promote their new razor, the Quattro Titanium. The program is a secret shave lab that is staffed by Dr. Smooth and 3 lovely lab assistants. Guys are welcomed to enter the Shave Lab to participate in a secret experiment. In the end, they leave with a brand new Titanium razor and a lab report, which includes a coupon for replacement blades. The ... read more

. Today we are starting our long trek south (again), first stop Victoria! We continue to have fabulous weather and this morning was no exception - the sky was blue with hardly a cloud, it warmed up pretty quickly and we didn’t have to wear coats! To give you an idea, the people in the cabin next door left with running shorts on… We are just hoping that by making this comment we aren’t jinxing the rest of the trip! A quiet morning by the pool reading an F1 magazine... doesn't get much better for me. Lazed around in the sun, then went for a walk along the beach in the afternoon, spotting a Karmhan Ghia for sale. Bargain at $5200 - less than £3000, and only 33,000 miles. I'd already set up my car import export company. I'll source the cars over here and ship them back to Scotland for Ryan to sell. A perefect plan ruined by the fact I am skint and have no job to earn money. Wonder if they would take Mastercard?. After walking back the few miles I'd traipsed along the beach I could hear tonights entertainment kick off. He had the looks of Mr T and the musical ability to match, I pity the fool. So avoiding Mr T, ... read more

in the District of Columbia It's an odd play on words on DC licence plates - subtly mocking the catch cry of the revolution of 1775. I didn't get the joke till Mary explained it to me. It's a fantastic city is Washington, built to Pierre l'Enfant's master plan for the new capital. It has wide boulevards, the National Mall (as opposed to Mall of America) and is adorned with so many gorgeous neoclassical buildings. Jen and I arrived on Friday morning at 5.20 am. Lesson for the day - red eye flights are not that crash hot across the USA. We were both thrilled to see Pete and Mary as we stepped out of the airport an hour later into the bucketing rain and DCs morning rush hour. To see so many cars on ... read more

After that mad 300 dollar night (not even one free bottle of champers), we went to a brilliant village called Calistoga. There was a tasting festival on and we just sat on the grass, imbibing excellent white wines and listening to a live dixie jazz style band of old codgers giving their instruments what for. The place we stayed was maybe the best bit - The Calistoga Inn is an old French design they said, all wood panelling and creaky floorboards. I felt like Huckleberry Finn. Here they had an interesting looking book on one of the shelves....something like "A painstaking work of breathtaking genius"; I read quite some pages, but didnt want to swap it with the books I had brought myself. In Calistoga we had the most exquisite meal of our lives at some ... read more
